What are the benefits of using aluminum systems for screening?

Aluminum screen systems are durable, low maintenance and carry a factory-applied finish rather than a site-applied one, so there is no painting or sealing cycle on a run that is awkward to reach once it is up. They are also light for their coverage, which matters when a screen is fixed to an existing structure that has to carry it. What a screen does well is define and shade a space. It is not a security barrier, and it should not be specified as one.

How durable are aluminum screen systems?

Aluminum does not rot, does not absorb moisture and is not a food source for insects, so a screen does not deteriorate the way a wood one does. Corrosion resistance depends on the finish specification and the exposure rather than on the metal alone, so a beachfront elevation and a suburban courtyard are two different specifications. Wind load is a matter for the fixing design and the substructure, and a screen presents more area to the wind than an open railing of the same height. Fixed screen systems, including Geoline, Geofix and Stand-Up Battens, do not move once installed, so the spacing and orientation are set at specification stage.

Are aluminum screen systems customizable?

Yes, aluminum screen systems are highly customizable. They can be designed to fit specific dimensions, and the pattern, spacing and orientation of the screens can be tailored to meet specific design requirements. Custom colors and finishes are also available.

What aluminum screen systems does Knotwood offer?

Do Knotwood aluminum screens require painting or maintenance?

No. All Knotwood screen profiles are factory-finished and do not require site painting or sealing. Finishes include solid powder coat colors and sublimated wood grain options. The factory-applied finish does not require the periodic recoating that wood screening demands, reducing the lifetime maintenance cost of the installation.

How does spacing affect the privacy provided by an aluminum screen?

Batten profile spacing directly controls the level of privacy and airflow the screen provides. Closer spacing provides near-solid privacy with minimal light or view penetration. Wider spacing defines a space without fully blocking views or light. Knotwood screens can be specified with spacing adjusted to the privacy level required for the application, whether that is a solid boundary fence or an open facade screen.

Can aluminum screens be used as balustrades on decks and balconies?

Yes. Knotwood screen profiles are used as infill within balustrade frames on decks, balconies and mezzanines, where they give privacy as well as edge protection, which a standard picket railing does not. Guard requirements are set by the IRC for residential work and the IBC for commercial, as adopted and amended locally, and they govern guard height, the size of opening the guard may contain, and the loads the guard has to resist at the top. Those figures come from the International Code Council and the jurisdiction, not from the product, and compliance is assessed on the installed assembly including the connection back to the structure. Can aluminum screens be used on building facades?

Yes. Facade screens are one of the primary applications for Knotwood screen profiles. Screen panels on building facades can function as decorative cladding, sun shading or a combination of both. The same profiles used for residential privacy fencing can be applied to commercial building facades at larger scale, with spacing and orientation adjusted to suit the design and solar shading requirements.

What finishes are available for Knotwood aluminum screens?

Knotwood aluminum screens are available in solid powder coat colors and sublimated wood grain finishes. Black and dark gray powder coated finishes are common choices for contemporary residential projects. Knotwood aluminum products, including the full screen range, are manufactured in Phoenix, Arizona, using aluminum sourced from the U.S. Domestic manufacturing supports consistent supply for North American projects and makes it straightforward to specify American-made materials for projects with domestic sourcing requirements.

How are aluminum screens fixed and supported?

It depends on what the screen is fixing to. Free-standing screens run on posts, either concreted into footings or base-plated and anchored to a slab, deck or retaining wall. Screens fixed to a building are carried on a substructure set out to suit the profile and the span. Either way the fixing design comes from the panel height, the open area of the screen and the wind exposure of the position, because a closely spaced screen presents far more area to the wind than an open one of the same size. That is worth settling before anything is made, since it affects post spacing, footing size and the setout. What is the lead time on aluminum screens?

Typically two to four weeks from order to dispatch, though it depends on the profile, the finish and the size of the run. Because aluminum screens are made to the project rather than held in stock heights, the drawings and the setout need to be settled before fabrication starts. Getting the panel heights and the spacing confirmed early is what keeps that window short.
