Geo Structure is Knotwood's engineered, modular pergola system, an outdoor shading solution built to give a project genuine architectural presence rather than just somewhere to escape the sun. Posts, beams and clip batten shapes combine into a structure that can be configured to suit a range of outdoor living layouts, from a compact courtyard to a larger entertaining area.
This system is a strong fit for homeowners wanting an architecturally designed pergola that feels purpose-built for their space, outdoor entertaining areas needing a modular structure suited to an irregular or larger layout and renovation projects replacing an aging patio cover or shade structure with an engineered system.
Geo Structure shares the same aluminum construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of Knotwood's range, backed by a 15-year standard warranty with up to 25 years on selected finishes. Fixings are 304 or 316 grade stainless steel, and a suitable isolating material is required between the existing support post and the Post Covers. Because a pergola carries wind and, in many states, snow loading, engineering specifications are prepared for the specific structure. Contact our team with the site and the configuration and we will confirm what the structure will carry.
Geo Structure builds around an existing support post, enclosed with Post Covers in three sizes (3 7/8", 6" or 8") to suit the post being covered. Geometric Beams (2" x 8") fasten to the Post Covers, closed off with infills and endcaps, then Batten Brackets carry the roof battens (2" x 2" or 2" x 4") across the top, each finished with endcaps.
Post Covers enclose an existing support post, aligned and securely fixed for a neat, consistent finish, with a suitable isolating material fitted between the post and the covers to prevent white rust. Alternative cover sizes suit different post dimensions. The top of the Post Covers is then closed off with a fitted endcap.
Geometric Beams fasten firmly to the Post Covers, then close off with infills and endcaps at the open sides and ends. Batten Brackets install on top, evenly spaced and aligned, carrying the roof battens that fix to each bracket in turn.
The system closes out with three dedicated end cap parts: a cast end cap for the 2" x 4" battens, a routed end cap for the 2" x 8" beam, and a routed end cap for the 6" x 6" Post Covers. Every open profile end in the structure, posts, beams and battens, gets closed off with the matching cap for a fully enclosed, finished result.
Vary the spacing between battens to adjust privacy and ventilation.
Combine different shapes and sizes to craft a unique look.
Mix and match different wood colors to create realistic and dynamic wood looks.
Install vertically or horizontally to suit your project’s flow and architectural intent.
The Knotwood Geo Structure is a structural aluminum pergola and shade structure system for architectural applications at residential and commercial scale. It is designed for projects where the outdoor structure is part of the building’s architectural composition, not an add-on element. The post-and-beam system uses aluminum structural members and can be combined with Knotwood cladding, batten, louvre, and screen products to create fully integrated outdoor structures.
Geo Structure is specified and ordered to configuration rather than sold as a fixed kit. Post Covers, Geometric Beams, Batten Brackets and roof battens are selected to suit the existing post size and the layout being covered, then supplied with the matching infills and end caps. Engineering specifications are prepared for the specific structure, so contact our team with the site dimensions and we will put together the configuration and the documentation for it.
An aluminum pergola does not warp, rot or need the regular painting, oiling or retreating a wood structure demands. It will not split or check as it ages, and it is non-combustible, which matters in a wildfire-prone area or where the structure sits close to the house. The sublimated wood grain finish gives the look of a wood pergola without the maintenance schedule that comes with one.
Knotwood supplies across the United States. Because Geo Structure is configured to the site rather than sold as a fixed kit, the starting point is a conversation about the layout and the existing post structure. Contact our team with your project details and we will work through the configuration, the finish and the lead time with you.
Yes. The modular design of the Geo Structure means it can adapt to different footprints rather than requiring the space to be altered to fit a fixed structure. It can suit irregular layouts, wrap around existing features, or extend an indoor living area outward. This flexibility makes it practical for builders and landscapers working across different site conditions, as well as homeowners with non-standard outdoor spaces.
Geo Structure builds around an existing support post rather than standing as a free-standing frame, so the location needs a suitable post already in place for the Post Covers, beams and battens to attach to. The posts themselves are supplied and installed as part of the site works, not by Knotwood, and their size, footing and structural capacity are designed for the specific project. Post Covers come in three sizes, 3 7/8″, 6″ and 8″, to enclose the post once it is in.
Geo Structure is available in the full Knotwood finish range, including sublimated wood grain and solid powder coated options. See our finishes page for the current range.
The Geo Structure is a low-maintenance system. The aluminum construction does not rot, warp or need retreating, and periodic washing with a soft broom and water, using a pH-neutral detergent, is typically all that is needed to remove dirt, leaf matter, salt and grime. There is no repainting schedule of the kind a wood pergola carries.
Often yes. Permit requirements for a pergola or shade structure vary by state and local jurisdiction, and usually turn on the size of the structure, whether it is attached to the building and how close it sits to a property line. The governing requirements come from the adopted building code in your area, published by the International Code Council. Engineering specifications are prepared for each Geo Structure, so contact our team and we will provide the documentation your permit application needs.
