An outdoor space only earns its place in daily life once it’s shaded properly: somewhere to sit through the middle of the day, somewhere that still feels like part of the home when the sun is high. Knotwood’s aluminum pergola systems are built to do exactly that, architectural outdoor shading structures designed for U.S. conditions and finished to bring genuine wood warmth to an outdoor room.
For homeowners planning an outdoor living upgrade or builders finishing a patio or deck, Knotwood systems combine considered design with the durability and low maintenance only an engineered aluminum structure can offer. A Knotwood aluminum pergola isn’t a flat-pack kit from a home improvement store: it’s specified and built to project requirements, with the scale, profile and finish matched to the architecture of the building and the outdoor space.
Wood pergola posts and beams face UV degradation, moisture absorption, splitting and insect attack depending on species and climate, and need annual oiling or sealing to slow it down. Aluminum structures don’t break down the same way: the factory-applied finish means no site painting or sealing, and in wildfire-prone areas a non-combustible structure is a real advantage over combustible wood. Paired with wood grain decking and cladding, a wood grain aluminum structure creates an outdoor space that reads as naturally finished rather than synthetic.
Select an application to explore available solutions.
Geo Structure is Knotwood’s engineered, modular pergola system, built from posts, beams and clip batten shapes that combine to create a custom outdoor structure. The same aluminum construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes run through every part of the kit.
An aluminum pergola is an outdoor shade structure built from extruded aluminum profiles rather than wood. It does not rot, warp or require annual oiling and sealing. Knotwood systems are specified and built to project requirements rather than sold as off-the-shelf kits, so the scale, profile and finish are matched to the architecture of the building and the outdoor space.
A kit pergola comes in a box in stock sizes and is designed to be put up over a weekend, which is exactly right when the job is to get some shade over a patio quickly. A Knotwood aluminum pergola is specified and made to the project, so the scale, profile and finish are set to suit the building rather than the other way around, and it is installed by a trade. That difference shows up most on an attached structure, where the connection back to the house and the flashing at the junction need detailing rather than bracketing. Which one suits comes down to whether the structure is part of the architecture or an add-on to it.
Wood pergola posts and beams are subject to UV degradation, moisture absorption, splitting and insect attack. Annual oiling or sealing slows deterioration but does not prevent it. In wildfire-prone areas, wood is combustible and can contribute to ember ignition. Aluminum structures are non-combustible, UV-resistant and do not break down the way wood does. The factory-applied finish does not require site painting or sealing.
Aluminum is non-combustible under ASTM E136, and Knotwood profiles are ASTM E84 Class A rated and CAN/ULC-S114 fire-tested, so the structure does not contribute fuel to a wildfire. That matters in Wildland-Urban Interface zones, where an attached structure over a deck is one of the paths fire takes to a house. It does not make the structure compliant on its own, because the requirements come from the applicable I-Code as adopted by your jurisdiction, with a state overlay such as California’s Chapter 7A, and they are assessed on the whole assembly. Send us the applicable code and the structure detail and we will confirm what test evidence is available.
Knotwood’s aluminum shade structure system is called Geo Structure. It is designed for architectural outdoor structures at residential and commercial scale, covering decks, garden structures, hospitality terraces, restaurant outdoor dining areas and covered walkways. See the Geo Structure page for full profile and specification details.
No. Knotwood structures are factory-finished and do not require site painting or sealing. The finish is applied in the factory rather than on site, so there is no coating cycle to keep up with on a structure that is awkward to reach. This removes ongoing maintenance from the ownership cost of the structure.
It depends on the span, the pitch and what the roof has to carry. A polycarbonate or sheet roof adds dead load and, more importantly, changes how the structure behaves under wind, because a closed roof catches uplift where an open pergola lets air through. Solar panels add their own weight and their own fixing requirements. All of that has to be worked out for the specific structure rather than assumed from the profile, so a roofed structure is engineered to the project. Tell us the span, the intended roof type and the site location at the enquiry stage and our team will confirm what can be supported and what documentation comes with it.
Knotwood structures are available in wood grain and solid powder coated finishes. The wood grain option gives the structure the warm, natural look of wood without the maintenance schedule. Paired with wood grain decking and cladding, a wood grain aluminum pergola creates an outdoor space that reads as naturally finished rather than synthetic. The current U.S. range is set out on our finishes page.
Yes. Knotwood structures are used for commercial hospitality terraces, restaurant outdoor dining areas and covered walkways, as well as residential outdoor rooms and decks. The Geo Structure system is designed for architectural-scale applications and can be specified for both residential and commercial projects.
A wood grain aluminum pergola looks similar to a wood structure at normal viewing distance but eliminates the maintenance cycle entirely. Wood posts and beams need annual oiling or sealing to resist UV degradation, moisture and splitting. Aluminum does not absorb moisture or degrade under UV exposure, and the factory finish does not require periodic recoating. For WUI zones, aluminum is also non-combustible where wood is not.
Yes. Because all Knotwood products come from the same product family and share the same finish range, a shade structure, decking planks, screen fence and exterior cladding can all be specified from Knotwood in matching finishes. This allows the same wood grain or powder coat color to carry through every outdoor element of a project from a single supplier.
Knotwood aluminum products, including the Geo Structure system, are manufactured in Phoenix, Arizona, using aluminum sourced from the U.S. Domestic manufacturing supports consistent supply for North American projects and makes it straightforward to specify American-made materials for projects with domestic sourcing requirements.
Backed by a standard 15-year warranty and up to 25 years on selected finishes. See our warranty page for the terms that apply to this profile. The structure is exposed on every face and is one of the harder things on a property to reach once it is up, so the finish specification is worth settling properly at the start. Tell us the site location at specification stage and our sales team will confirm what applies.
Both work, and the choice usually comes down to where the shade is needed rather than to cost. An attached structure fixes back to the wall or to the fascia at one end and sits on posts at the other, which reduces the post count and ties the outdoor room to the building. The connection has to land on structure rather than on cladding, so the wall build-up matters, and the flashing at the junction needs detailing so water is not driven back into the wall. A freestanding structure avoids all of that and is the simpler option where the deck sits away from the house.
