Operable Louvers put the control in the user's hands. Each blade adjusts to manage light, airflow and privacy as conditions change through the day, opening up a space when the weather is kind and closing it down when the sun, wind or rain need to be kept at bay. It's a system for projects where flexibility matters as much as the shading itself.
This system is a strong fit for facades that need to respond to changing sun angles and seasonal conditions, pergola and outdoor living structures where adjustable shade extends the space's everyday use and architectural screens and partitions where privacy and openness both need to be on offer.
Operable Louvers share the same aluminum construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of Knotwood's louver range, backed by a 15-year standard warranty with up to 25 years on selected finishes. Every blade rotates on a shared Control Bar, so one adjustment moves the whole run together. Contact our team to confirm the fastener specification for your substrate and location.
Operable Louvers come in a single 3.5" blade, set into a routed frame built from top, mid, side and bottom rail sections, with the bottom rail available in two sizes to suit different frame widths. Each blade takes a pivot cap at both ends before installation, then fixes into the frame from top to bottom, finished with the Control Bar linking every blade for simultaneous rotation, available in standard 18.6' lengths.
The frame builds from the bottom, side and top rail sections, with the mid rail fixed in at the required position once the outer frame is square. The completed frame fixes into the prepared structural opening, then each blade takes a pivot cap at both ends before installing into the frame from top to bottom, confirming free rotation as each one goes in.
Once every blade is in place, the Control Bar fixes into each blade end, linking the full run so one adjustment rotates every blade together. The bottom rail comes in two sizes to suit different frame widths, and an H Section is available for larger openings, giving the system room to scale without changing how it operates.
Create dynamic facades with operable blades that adjust airflow, light and privacy on demand, for spaces whose use changes through the day.
Install panels vertically or horizontally to match your project's flow and architectural intent, with the blade line running to suit the elevation. Fixed and operable panels use the same 3 1/2" blade, so the two can sit side by side without a visible change in profile.
Operable Louvers are a blade-based shading and screening system where the blades can be adjusted to control light, airflow, and privacy. Also called adjustable aluminum louvers, the blades rotate to open or close depending on conditions, allowing a facade, pergola, or screen to respond to changing sun angles, wind, and privacy needs throughout the day. Knotwood’s Operable Louvers are available in architectural-grade finishes for residential and commercial applications.
Operable Louvers have adjustable blades that rotate to change the angle of shading, airflow, and privacy. Fixed Louvers are set permanently at one angle during installation and do not move. Operable Louvers are the right choice when flexibility is needed through the day or across seasons. Fixed Louvers are the lower-maintenance option for applications where a single, consistent blade position covers the project requirement year-round.
Operable Louvers are used across facades, pergolas, outdoor living structures, privacy screens and architectural partitions. They suit any application where the shading requirement changes through the day or the season rather than staying constant, which is the practical difference between this system and Fixed Louvers.
Each blade is mounted on a pivot cap at both ends, so it rotates within the frame rather than sliding or folding. A Control Bar fixes into every blade end and links the full run, so moving the bar rotates every blade at the same angle simultaneously. Opening the blades lets light and air through, closing them down blocks direct sun and sightlines, and the positions in between let you tune the balance through the day.
Yes. Operable Louvers are well-suited to pergola and outdoor living structures where adjustable shade is the goal. The ability to open the blades for maximum airflow on cooler days and close them for shade in direct sun extends how long an outdoor space can be used comfortably through the day and across the year. Knotwood’s Operable Louvers are available in the same finishes as the broader Knotwood range, so they integrate with other Knotwood products on the same project.
Operable Louvers are available in the same architectural-grade finishes as the rest of the Knotwood louver range, including sublimated wood grain and solid powder coated options. See our finishes page for the current range.
Knotwood’s Operable Louvers are operated by a manual Control Bar that links every blade in the run, so a single adjustment rotates the whole panel together. If your project needs automated or switch-operated control, contact our team with the requirement and we will confirm what can be supplied for the application.
Knotwood’s Operable Louvers are available in the same architectural-grade finishes as the rest of the Knotwood louvre range, including timber look wood grain options. [NEEDS INPUT: confirm the full finish and colour range available specifically for Operable Louvers.]
The blades close down to block direct sun and sightlines, but this is a shading and screening system rather than a sealed roof. Closed blades will shed most light rain and give useful cover in a shower, and they are not a waterproof enclosure. If a project needs a genuinely weathertight cover over an outdoor area, that is a different build and worth talking through with our team before the design is locked in.
Yes, this is one of the most common uses. Blades run horizontally across the structure and the Control Bar rotates them together, so the space can be opened up on a mild day and closed down when the sun is high. Overhead installations carry different loading to a vertical screen, so the supporting structure and the fixing method need to be designed for the span. Send us the pergola dimensions and we will confirm what is required.
Panel width depends on the blade length, the frame and the loading at the site rather than a single published figure. An H Section is available for larger openings, which lets a run scale up without changing how it operates or how it is adjusted. Engineering specifications are prepared for the specific extrusion, so contact our team with the opening dimensions and we will confirm what can be spanned in one panel and where a division is needed.
It depends on what it is attached to and where. A screen or partition often does not, while an overhead structure or a facade element on a commercial building usually does. The governing requirements come from the adopted building code in your jurisdiction, published by the International Code Council. Contact our team with the project details and we will provide the documentation your application needs.
Blades can be closed down or opened up depending on conditions, and the right position in strong wind depends on the installation. On an exposed facade or an overhead structure, wind loading is the main factor in how the frame is built and fixed, not the blade itself. Engineering specifications are prepared for the site conditions, so send us the location and exposure and we will confirm the frame and fixing requirements.
Yes. Each blade sits on pivot caps at both ends and links to the Control Bar at its end, so a single blade can be released and replaced without dismantling the frame or disturbing the blades around it. It is worth keeping a spare or two from the original order, since finishes can vary slightly between production batches.
Fully open, the blades sit close to edge-on, so most of the light and view comes through and the screen reads as a light frame rather than a solid element. Rotating them progressively cuts the direct sun while keeping diffused light, and fully closed gives near-total shade with the sightline blocked. That range is the reason to choose an adjustable system over a fixed one: a north-facing room can be opened up in winter and closed down through summer without changing anything about the installation.
