Fixed Louvers are a set-and-forget system. The blade angle is fixed in place, engineered to deliver permanent privacy and solar shading exactly where a project needs it, with nothing to adjust and nothing to service. For facades, screens and partitions where the requirement does not change through the day or the season, that simplicity is the whole point.
This system is a strong fit for facades needing consistent solar shading on a fixed orientation, such as north or west-facing elevations, privacy screens where the sightline to be blocked does not change and partition applications needing a permanent, low-maintenance light and privacy solution.
Fixed Louvers share the same aluminum construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of Knotwood's louver range, backed by a 15-year standard warranty with up to 25 years on selected finishes. The fixed blade has no moving parts or mechanism to service, giving it the lowest-maintenance profile in the range. Contact our team to confirm the fastener specification for your substrate and location.
Fixed Louvers come in two blade profiles, a 2.5" slat and a wider 3.5" blade, each installing into a routed frame to match, with a top and bottom frame and infill closing out the assembly, available in standard 18.6' lengths.
Once the slats are secured to the side frames, the Infill fits over the join to hide every fixing used to hold the Geometric Slat in place, leaving a clean, fastener-free face on the finished frame.
Vary the spacing between blades to adjust privacy and ventilation.
Mix and match different timber colors to create realistic and dynamic timber looks.
Fixed Louvers are a blade-based screening or shading system where the blades are set at a permanent angle during installation. Unlike operable louvers, the blade position does not change after installation. Knotwood’s Fixed Louvers deliver consistent solar shading and privacy across facades, screens and partition applications. The fixed angle is chosen during specification to manage sun penetration, airflow and visual privacy for the specific orientation and use of the panel.
Fixed Louvers have blades set at a permanent angle, providing consistent shading and privacy with no mechanism to adjust. Operable Louvers have adjustable blades that can be rotated to change light, airflow, and privacy levels as conditions change. Fixed Louvers are the lower-maintenance option and suit projects where the shading requirement stays constant. Because there are no mechanical components after installation, Fixed Louvers also suit applications where access is limited.
Fixed Louver panels are used for facade sun screening on commercial and residential buildings, privacy screens on balconies and decks, balustrade infill panels and screening on carports and covered outdoor structures.
The blade angle determines what the panel does. A steep upward angle maximizes airflow and limits privacy. A downward angle at a moderate pitch blocks low-angle afternoon sun while still allowing airflow. A tighter downward pitch creates a near-solid screen with limited airflow. Selecting the right angle requires knowing the panel orientation, the sun path for the project’s location, and the privacy and airflow requirements of the space.
Blade angle is set at fabrication rather than chosen from a fixed list, because the right angle depends on the orientation of the elevation and what the panel needs to do. A steeper angle blocks more direct sun and gives more privacy from below, a shallower angle keeps more of the view and lets more light through. Two blade profiles are available, a 2.5″ slat and a wider 3.5″ blade. Send us the elevation and what you need the screen to achieve and we will work out the blade profile and angle to suit.
Fixed Louvers are the lowest-maintenance product in the range, because there are no moving parts, no mechanism and no motor to service. Periodic washing with a soft broom and water, using a pH-neutral detergent, is all that is needed. There is no sealing, oiling or repainting at any stage.
Yes. Fixed Louvers suit privacy screening applications well. The blade angle is set to block specific sightlines while allowing light and airflow to pass through, which makes them a practical and architectural choice for balcony privacy screens, garden boundary screens, window screening and courtyard partition walls where permanent privacy from a fixed direction is needed.
Fixed Louvers are available in the same architectural-grade finishes as the rest of the Knotwood louver range, including sublimated wood grain and solid powder coated options. See our finishes page for the current range.
Fixed Louvers are manufactured from 6060 T5 extruded aluminum and are tested to ASTM E84, ASTM E136 and CAN/ULC-S114, achieving a Class A result for surface burning characteristics. That matters on facade screening and balcony privacy screens, where the adopted building code sets what can be used on the exterior of a building. Contact our team for the test documentation when a project carries a defined fire requirement.
Blades set at the right angle intercept direct sun before it reaches the glass, which cuts solar gain at the facade rather than leaving the air conditioning to deal with it once the heat is already inside. How much difference it makes depends on the orientation of the elevation, the blade angle and the depth of the blade. West-facing glass takes low afternoon sun and usually needs a different setup to a north-facing wall. Send us the elevation and we will work through the geometry with you.
Yes. That is the point of a louver rather than a solid panel. The gap between blades lets air move through the screen while the blade face blocks the sightline and the sun, so a balcony or a plant enclosure stays ventilated without being open to view. Closing the spacing up increases privacy and shading and reduces airflow, so the spacing gets set against whichever of those matters most on the project.
They are used that way, installed within a post-and-rail or perimeter frame that carries the structural load. Guard and balustrade requirements, including loading and opening limits, are set by the adopted building code in your jurisdiction, published by the International Code Council. Contact our team with the project details and we will confirm what the panel will carry and how it needs to be framed.
Yes. Panels are made to suit the opening rather than supplied in fixed modules, so a run can step or rake to follow a stair, a sloping soffit or an irregular elevation. Raked panels need the blade angle checked against the rake, because a blade that shades correctly on a vertical panel will behave differently once the frame is tilted. Send us the elevation drawings and we will work it out before anything is fabricated.
Panel size depends on the blade profile, the spacing and the wind loading at the site rather than a single published figure. The 3.5″ blade carries further between frames than the 2.5″ slat, and an exposed upper-level facade needs more support than a ground-level courtyard screen. Engineering specifications are prepared for the specific extrusion, so contact our team with the opening dimensions and the site and we will confirm what can be spanned.
In most cases yes, provided the existing structure can carry the panel and the fixings. Because each panel is made to the opening, retrofit work is usually a question of what is behind the facade rather than what the screen itself can do. Wind loading on an existing building also needs checking, since a screen adds surface area the original structure was not designed for. Send us photos and dimensions and we will tell you what is involved.
Battens are square or rectangular sections spaced apart, so the gap between them reads the same from any angle. A louver blade is angled, so the screen closes up as you move around it and opens as you look through it square on. That makes louvers the better choice where privacy or shading is needed from one particular direction, and battens the better choice where you want an even, repeating pattern read the same way from everywhere.
