Aluminum louvers solve a problem a flat surface can’t: how to control light, airflow and privacy all at once, and adjust the balance between them as the day or the season changes. Knotwood’s aluminum louver panels bring that flexibility across facades, screens and partitions, in a range built for U.S. sun, heat and weather.
Knotwood louvers are specified for facade shading, partition systems and outdoor screening alike. Whichever application they’re going into, they combine genuine design flexibility with the durability and low maintenance an engineered aluminum system delivers.
Fixed systems have blades set at a permanent angle, selected during specification to control sun penetration, privacy and airflow, a low-maintenance, set-and-forget system for projects where the angle doesn’t need to change. Operable louvers adjust on demand, opening for airflow and view or closing for full privacy and sun blockage. Both systems share the same aluminum construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes engineered for U.S. conditions, so a project can move between fixed and operable panels without losing a consistent look.
Select an application to explore available solutions.
Fixed Louvers are Knotwood’s set-and-forget blade system, the angle is fixed in place at installation, delivering permanent privacy and solar shading with nothing to adjust and nothing to maintain beyond the system’s natural low upkeep.
Operable Louvers put the control in your hands. Each blade rotates on a shared control bar, adjusting light, airflow and privacy as conditions change through the day, opening a space up when the weather’s kind and closing it down when it isn’t.
Aluminum louvers are blade-shaped extruded aluminum profiles installed in a parallel arrangement to control the passage of light, air and sightlines through a facade or screen. The angle of the blade determines how much light and airflow passes through and how much visual privacy the system provides. They are used for facade shading, balcony screens, pergolas and architectural partitions.
Fixed systems have blades set at a permanent angle, selected during specification to control sun penetration, privacy level and airflow. Operable systems have adjustable blades that can be angled to control light and airflow on demand. Both systems share the same aluminum construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finish range.
Aluminum louvers are commonly specified for facade shading on south and west-facing elevations, privacy screens on balconies and courtyards, architectural partitions that control light and sightlines, and pergola or outdoor living structures that benefit from adjustable shade. Both fixed and operable systems suit residential and commercial projects across North America.
In architecture, a louver is a series of angled blades or slats fitted into a frame to allow air and light to pass through while controlling the degree of visibility and solar exposure. In building facades and screens, they are specified to manage solar heat gain, privacy and ventilation without fully enclosing a space.
In construction, they are used to shade facades, screen balconies and courtyards, partition internal or external spaces, and manage solar heat gain on exposed elevations. They are a common specification choice for architects and builders because they combine design flexibility with durability, low maintenance and the ability to control light and airflow without a solid surface.
Yes. The U.S. range is manufactured in Phoenix, Arizona, with architectural-grade powder-coated finishes designed for North American building conditions across facade, screening and partition applications.
Yes. Aluminum louver screens are a common choice for balcony and courtyard privacy applications. The blade angle determines how much of the sightline is blocked from outside while still allowing air and filtered light through. Both fixed and operable systems are suited to balcony screening on residential and commercial projects.
Aluminum louvers shade a facade or opening by intercepting direct sunlight at the blade angle. On south and west-facing elevations, where solar heat gain is greatest in North America, fixed blades can be set to block the highest sun angles, while operable blades can be adjusted through the day, reducing the heat load entering a building. External shading is treated as part of the building envelope under the energy provisions of the I-Codes as adopted by your jurisdiction, so it is worth raising with the energy consultant early rather than adding it after the glazing is specified.
Yes. Operable panels are available with manual or motorized operation. Manual suits a courtyard screen or a small run where someone is there to adjust it. Motorized makes more sense on a large facade, on anything at height, or where the blades need to move on a schedule rather than on demand. The actuator specification depends on the panel size, the number of banks and how they are to be controlled, so it is set per project. Tell us the run and how you want it operated and our team will confirm the options.
Knotwood systems are available in solid powder coated colors and sublimated wood grain finishes, and the same range applies across both fixed and operable systems, so a project can move between them without the finish shifting. Because a louver blade is seen edge-on from some angles and face-on from others, the finish reads differently across the run, which is worth looking at on a sample rather than on screen. The current U.S. range is set out on our finishes page.
Yes. Knotwood systems are specified for both external applications such as facade shading and balcony screens, and internal architectural partition applications where the goal is to control light and sightlines without fully closing a space off. The same modular construction and concealed fixing method applies across both contexts.
Knotwood offers two systems for the U.S. market. Fixed Louvers have blades set at a permanent angle, chosen at specification stage to deliver privacy and solar shading on facades, screens and partitions. Operable Louvers adjust on demand, so the same panel can open for airflow and view or close for privacy and full shade. Both share the same concealed fixings, modular construction and finish range, which is what lets a project run fixed panels on one elevation and operable on another without the two reading as different products.
Backed by a standard 15-year warranty and up to 25 years on selected finishes. See our warranty page for the terms that apply to this profile. Operable systems have moving parts, so the blade mechanism and any motorized components carry their own terms separate from the finish. Tell us the site location and whether the system is fixed or operable at specification stage and our sales team will confirm what applies.
It comes from the orientation of the elevation and what the panel has to do there. A blade set to block high summer sun will still let low winter sun through, which is what you want on a cold-climate elevation and not what you want on a west face in Phoenix. Privacy works differently again, because the angle that blocks a view from the street may leave the view from an upper floor wide open. A fixed blade cannot be changed once the panel is made, so this gets settled on the drawings using the sun angles for the actual latitude rather than adjusted later. Send us the elevation and the location and our team will work through it with you.
Closed blades shed most water, which is why operable systems are used over decks and outdoor rooms, but a louver is not a roof and should not be specified as one. Water runs off the blades rather than off a sealed sheet, so some gets through at the overlaps in driven rain, and whatever sits below needs to tolerate getting damp. Where the space underneath has to stay dry in all conditions, a solid roof is the right element and they sit alongside it as shade. Tell us how the space will be used and we will be straight with you about which suits.
