Interlocking Planks clip together to create a fast, concealed-fix decking installation, the kind of system that gets a deck up cleanly without a surface full of visible fasteners. Each plank locks into the next, building a continuous, considered surface that looks as good as it performs.
This system is a strong fit for homeowners wanting a clean, fastener-free deck finish without visible fixings, alfresco and entertaining areas where a continuous, considered surface matters and renovation projects replacing an aging wood deck with a low-maintenance system.
Interlocking Planks share the same aluminum construction and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of Knotwood's decking range, fixed with 304 or 316 grade stainless steel fasteners, and backed by a 15-year standard warranty with up to 25 years on selected finishes.
Interlocking Planks come in a single 6-inch width, installed with a dedicated Starter profile along the first edge, Plank Clips fixing each board to the support surface, and Cladding Trim or a hidden Plank Trim finishing the perimeter depending on whether an edge is exposed.
The Starter fixes along the first edge, then the first plank slides into it so its edge is held down and its clip fixes it to the support surface. Each following plank slides into the one before it, locking the join down as it clips into place, repeated row by row until the deck area is complete.
Where a plank edge meets a wall or unexposed surface, the Cladding Trim fixes first, then the Cladding Trim Top clips into it to close the perimeter cleanly. Where an edge is exposed, to a pool or garden for example, the hidden Plank Trim Finisher fixes through the concealed groove instead.
Interlocking Planks carry a sublimated wood grain surface with a textured profile underfoot, applied over a powder coat base. It is the only finish in the Knotwood range with a slip resistant coating rather than a standard powder coat surface.
Designed to integrate with decking stairways and landings, providing consistent lines and safe, stylish edge protection.
Use varied board widths to add character to your design.
A flawless finish with hidden fixings that enhance the clean lines and premium look of your installation.
Interlocking decking planks are a decking system where each aluminum plank locks into the next, building a continuous deck surface without exposed fasteners on top. The fixing is concealed within the interlocking joint, so the finished deck has a clean, uninterrupted face. Knotwood’s interlocking planks are extruded aluminum and are available in architectural-grade finishes including sublimated wood grain.
A standard screwed deck has visible fasteners driven through the face of each board. An interlocking system hides the fixing entirely inside the joint between planks, so there are no exposed screws on the surface. That removes visual disruption to the finish and eliminates the corrosion risk around surface fixings that comes with years of outdoor exposure. A deck surface without visible fasteners also looks cleaner and is easier to keep clean, with no screw recesses for dirt and moisture to collect in.
Interlocking Planks carry a slip resistant coating as part of the sublimated wood grain finish, applied over a powder coat base. It is the only product in the Knotwood range specified with a slip resistant surface rather than a standard powder coat. Where a project has a defined slip resistance requirement, such as a commercial pool surround or a rooftop terrace, contact our team and we will provide the test documentation that applies.
Aluminum decking planks require very little maintenance compared to wood. There is no sanding, oiling, repainting or retreating involved. A periodic wash-down with a soft broom and water, using a pH-neutral detergent, is typically all that is needed to remove dirt, grime and salt residue. The aluminum construction means there is no risk of the planks cupping, swelling, splitting or rotting over time.
Aluminum decking is a practical choice for pool surrounds and wet outdoor areas. It does not absorb moisture and will not swell, warp or rot when exposed to water, pool chemicals or high humidity, and the finish carries a slip resistant coating. In pool and coastal locations use 316 grade stainless steel fasteners rather than 304, and wash the deck down with fresh water regularly to clear chlorine and salt residue before it builds up on the finish.
Interlocking Planks are available in sublimated wood grain and solid powder coated finishes. The wood grain option on this product carries a slip resistant coating specific to the decking range. See our finishes page for the current range.
Aluminum interlocking decking is used for residential outdoor decks, alfresco and entertaining areas, balcony flooring, pool surrounds, commercial outdoor dining areas, rooftop terrace flooring and renovation projects replacing an aging wood deck. The concealed-fix system is a strong choice wherever a fastener-free surface finish is the design priority. The aluminum construction also suits coastal environments where salt air would accelerate the deterioration of a wood or steel deck.
The system is laid over standard joist framing. A Starter profile fixes along the first edge, then the first plank slides into it and clips to the support surface. Each following plank slides into the one before it, locking the join down as it clips into place, repeated row by row until the deck area is complete. Perimeter edges close with Cladding Trim where a plank meets a wall, or a hidden Plank Trim Finisher where the edge is exposed. Board ends are cut to length on site with standard aluminum cutting tools. Joist spacing depends on the span and the loading, so contact our team and we will confirm the supporting structure required.
Any decking surface in full sun gets warm, and aluminum is no exception. Surface temperature comes down mostly to color and exposure rather than the material: darker finishes absorb more heat than lighter ones, and a deck with afternoon shade or a pergola over it runs cooler than one in open sun all day. If the deck is a pool surround or a barefoot area in a hot climate, choosing a lighter finish and planning some shade into the design makes a real difference. Talk to us about finish selection before you specify.
Both avoid the sanding, oiling and staining a wood deck needs, but they behave differently over time. Composite boards contain wood fiber, so they absorb some moisture, and they expand and contract with temperature enough that gapping has to be planned for. Aluminum does not absorb moisture at all, will not swell, warp, split or rot, and is non-combustible. The interlocking joint also hides the fixing inside the board rather than relying on a surface screw or a side clip.
Yes, though the method depends on where the board sits. Because each plank locks into the one before it, the run is unpicked back from the nearest free edge to reach the damaged board, then relaid the same way. A board near the perimeter is quick, a board in the middle of a large deck means lifting more of the run. It is worth keeping a few spare planks from the original order, since finishes can vary slightly between production batches.
Yes, and it is a common use for the system. Aluminum is light compared with wood or tile, which matters where the structure has a load limit, and it is non-combustible, which matters on multi-residential and commercial buildings. The supporting structure, the fall for drainage and any waterproofing membrane below all need to be designed for the specific building, so send us the details and we will confirm how the deck should be built up.
Interlocking Planks are manufactured from 6063 T6 extruded aluminum and are tested to ASTM E136, ASTM E84 Class A and CAN/ULC-S114. That matters on rooftop terraces, multi-residential balconies and any project in a wildfire-prone area, where a combustible deck surface can be the weak point in an otherwise compliant building. Contact our team for the test documentation when a project carries a defined fire requirement.
