Weatherboards brings a timeless, shiplap-inspired profile to Knotwood's cladding range, with the traditional beveled shape, a thicker lower edge and a thinner top edge, that creates a layered, overlapping look across the facade. It's the aluminum version of the classic weatherboard siding that's been used on North American homes for generations.
Weatherboards suits homes where the traditional clapboard or weatherboard character is the goal, especially renovation projects on older homes where that look is part of the property's original style, as well as new builds designed in a traditional or transitional style.
Weatherboards shares the same aluminum construction and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of Knotwood's cladding range. Unlike wood weatherboard siding, it doesn't rot, split, cup or need a repainting cycle, holding its finish and shape across North American weather conditions.
Weatherboards comes in a single 6 inch size, installed with a Tab Lock system in standard 18 foot 6 inch lengths. Minimum order quantities and extended lead times may apply, contact Knotwood for details.
Each Weatherboard hooks onto a tab-lock starter at the base and swings flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed cladding clip. Installation works from the bottom up, one board locking into the next, finishing with a cover trim pressed over the base trim to close the perimeter.
A tab-lock starter trim is fixed to the base trim around the perimeter of the cladding area, giving the first Weatherboards board a secure hook point to swing onto and setting up every board that follows in the same system.
Base and cover trims run the perimeter of a Weatherboards run, concealing fixings around wall edges, windows and doors, and pressing together for a clean finished line wherever the cladding starts or stops.

Install boards vertically or horizontally to align with your architectural vision.
Weatherboards is a horizontal board-by-board system that replicates the classic layered look of traditional clapboard siding. The profile copies that aesthetic board for board in a non-combustible aluminum system with the finish applied in the factory rather than on site, so there is no repainting cycle, without the maintenance cycle traditional wood weatherboard siding requires.
Wood siding rots, splits, cups and requires regular painting, sanding and replacement over the life of a building. Aluminum holds the same classic look without those maintenance demands. It’s non-combustible, corrosion resistant and dimensionally stable, meaning the profile doesn’t expand, contract and degrade the way wood does through heat and humidity. The visual result is the same; the performance over time is significantly different.
Yes. The profile is designed as a direct replacement or match for traditional wood siding, making it a strong choice for renovations where the brief is to update a weatherboard or clapboard home without changing its character. The profile replicates the layered look, so new sections match the existing exterior visually while adding the low-maintenance and non-combustible performance of aluminum.
Aluminum does not rot or absorb moisture, which is the main thing wood struggles with near the coast. Corrosion resistance itself depends on the finish specification and the exposure rather than on the metal alone, so a beachfront elevation and a site two miles inland are two different specifications. Fastener selection and washdown frequency change as well. Send us the address and the exposure category and our team will confirm what suits and what maintenance goes with it.
It comes in a single 6 inch size, supplied in standard 18 foot 6 inch lengths. It uses a tab-lock fixing system: each board hooks onto a Tab-Lock Starter (KECTS) at the base and swings flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed Cladding Clip (KACC). Installation works from the bottom up, one board locking into the next, with Base Trim (F) and Cover Trim (M) closing the perimeter and Reversible corner trims finishing internal and external corners.
The range is available in the full Knotwood finish range, including wood grain and solid powder coated options. The wood grain finish gives a residential facade the appearance of traditional painted or stained wood siding, which is usually the point on a renovation where the character of the house is meant to survive the work. The current U.S. range is set out on our finishes page.
Both aluminum and composite products replicate the traditional weatherboard look without the maintenance. Aluminum is non-combustible, which composite products may not be depending on their composition, a relevant consideration under US building code provisions for external cladding. Aluminum is recyclable, and it does not soften or move the way a polymer-based board can in extreme heat.
Yes. The tab-lock system installs onto a standard substructure and supports retrofit applications where the existing wall is structurally sound and properly prepared, making it straightforward to update an existing weatherboard or clapboard home without altering the building’s character.
Aluminum is non-combustible under ASTM E136, so the board does not contribute fuel to a fire. Compliance is never assessed on the aluminum cladding alone, though. The complete wall system, including framing, weather barrier, insulation, fasteners and cavity protection, has to be tested or assessed as a code-compliant assembly under the applicable I-Code as adopted by your jurisdiction. Send us the applicable code and the wall build-up and our team will confirm what test evidence is available for this profile.
Backed by a standard 15-year warranty and up to 25 years on selected finishes. See our warranty page for the terms that apply to this profile.
