Castellated Boards bring a striking one-piece profile to Knotwood's cladding range, with a stepped cross-section that creates a strong horizontal shadow pattern across the facade. The three-dimensional profile casts deeper shadows than flatter profiles like Classic Boards or V Line Boards, giving the facade bold, dimensional texture and visual movement as the sun moves across the elevation.
Castellated Boards suit projects that want a facade to function as an architectural feature: commercial buildings where street presence matters, residential builds where the facade design is a deliberate statement, or any project that pairs a bold textured section against a flatter cladding profile like Classic Boards to give a large wall plane definition.
Castellated Boards share the same aluminum construction and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of Knotwood's cladding range. The one-piece profile means the shadow pattern is formed in the extrusion rather than assembled from separate parts, so it stays consistent across the whole elevation.
Castellated Boards come in a single 6 inch size, installed with a Tab Lock system in standard 18 foot 6 inch lengths. Minimum order quantities and extended lead times may apply. Contact Knotwood for details.
Each Castellated board hooks onto a tab-lock starter at the base and swings flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed cladding clip. Installation works from the bottom up, one board locking into the next, finishing with a cover trim pressed over the base trim to close the perimeter.
Castellated Boards install vertically using the same tab-lock system as a horizontal run, each board hooking onto the starter and swinging flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed cladding clip. Installation follows a left-to-right sequence, using the same starter, trims and corners as a horizontal wall.
A tab-lock starter trim (KECTS) is fixed to the base trim around the perimeter of the cladding area, giving the first Castellated board a secure hook point to swing onto and setting up every board that follows in the same system.
Base and cover trims run the perimeter of a Castellated run, concealing fixings around wall edges, windows and doors, and pressing together for a clean finished line wherever the cladding starts or stops.
Reversible corner trims let a Castellated run continue cleanly around both internal and external corners. Boards install up to the corner, then a corner cover trim presses into the corner base trim to finish the join.
Our interlocking boards can be spaced apart for a shadowline look.
Combine different board sizes to craft a distinctive look.
Mix and match different wood grain finishes to create a layered, natural wood-look surface.
Castellated cladding is an aluminum cladding profile shaped to create a repeating pattern of ridges and recesses across the facade surface, producing strong shadow lines and a bold textured look. Knotwood’s Castellated Boards give a building genuine architectural presence: the shaped profile catches light and casts changing shadows as the sun moves across the elevation, giving the facade visual movement and depth.
Castellated Boards are the most texturally bold of Knotwood’s close-fitted cladding profiles. Where Classic Boards adds a subtle or flush reveal and V Line adds a single groove line, Castellated Boards create a full surface pattern of ridges that reads clearly at street level. The profile generates stronger shadow definition than any of the flatter Knotwood cladding options, making it the right choice when the brief calls for a facade that makes a statement.
Castellated cladding suits projects that want a facade to function as an architectural feature: commercial buildings where street presence matters, residential builds where the facade design is a deliberate statement, or any project that pairs a bold textured section against a flatter cladding profile to give a large wall plane definition. It also works well on feature facade panels as a visual counterpoint to simpler adjacent surfaces.
The repeating ridges in a Castellated board create a shifting pattern of light and shadow across the building face as the sun moves through the day. This gives the facade visual movement without changing its material, color or finish. Architects use this effect deliberately: a castellated section breaks down a large wall plane and adds interest without introducing a new material or finish system, keeping the design language of the building coherent.
Yes. Castellated Boards are commonly used as a feature section alongside flatter Knotwood aluminum siding profiles on the same building. Because all Knotwood cladding shares the same aluminum construction, concealed fixing system and finish range, profiles can be combined across a single facade without sourcing from different suppliers. A castellated feature panel alongside a Classic Boards run is a typical pairing on commercial and residential projects.
Castellated Boards come in a single 6 inch size, supplied in standard 18 foot 6 inch lengths. It uses a tab-lock fixing system: each board hooks onto a Tab-Lock Starter (KECTS) at the base and swings flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed Cladding Clip (KACC). Installation works from the bottom up, with Base Trim (F) and Cover Trim (M) closing the perimeter and Reversible Corner Trims finishing internal and external corners. Unlike Weatherboards, Castellated Boards can also be installed vertically using the same system in a left-to-right sequence.
Castellated Boards are available in traditional solid powder coated colors or a sublimated wood grain surface. Because the stepped profile throws its own shadow across every ridge, a mid-tone finish reads considerably darker in the recesses than it does on a flat board, which is worth seeing on a sample before committing. The current U.S. range is set out on our finishes page.
Aluminum is non-combustible under ASTM E136, so the board does not contribute fuel to a fire. Compliance is never assessed on the cladding alone, though. The complete wall system, including framing, weather barrier, insulation, fasteners and cavity protection, has to be tested or assessed as a code-compliant assembly under the applicable I-Code as adopted by your jurisdiction. Send us the applicable code and the wall build-up and our team will confirm what test evidence is available for this profile.
Covered by the rewrite above, but note the page treats the product name as singular in places and plural in others. “Castellated Boards come in a single 6 inch size” is plural, “Castellated Boards carries” is singular. Worth one pass for consistency; plural reads better throughout.
Castellated Boards are made from 6063 T6 temper extruded aluminum alloy, sourced and produced in the United States.
