What are the benefits of using aluminum cladding?

Aluminum cladding is durable, low maintenance, and non-combustible, and it carries a factory-applied finish so there is no site painting or sealing. It is also light for its coverage, which matters on a retrofit where the existing structure has to carry the new cladding, and it is available in a range of colors and wood grain finishes.

How does aluminum exterior siding perform in harsh or extreme weather conditions?

Aluminum siding does not absorb moisture, does not warp, and does not rot, which covers most of what wood struggles with in rain, snow, and humidity. Corrosion resistance depends on the exposure and the finish specification rather than on the metal alone, so a coastal or industrial site is a specification conversation, not a given. Wind load is a matter for the fixing design and the substrate, and it is set by the local code adoption. Tell us the location and the exposure category and we will confirm what suits.

Can aluminum siding be retrofitted?

Aluminum siding can be installed over a variety of existing materials, such as wood, brick, or concrete, provided the underlying structure is sound and properly prepared.

Does aluminum cladding make the interior of a building hot?

The cladding is the outer skin, not the insulation, so the thermal performance of the wall comes from the build-up behind it. Installed as a rainscreen over a ventilated cavity with the insulation and weather barrier detailed to the code, the cladding does not add heat load to the interior. A dark finish will run hotter on the surface than a light one, the same as any exterior material.

Can I use Knotwood aluminum cladding in coastal or industrial environments with high corrosion exposure?

Often, yes, but it depends on how close the site is to the source of the exposure and on how the wall is detailed. Finish specification, fastener selection, and washdown frequency all change in a marine or industrial atmosphere, and the answer for a beachfront elevation is not the answer for a site two miles inland. How can Knotwood aluminum siding be installed to meet wildfire compliance requirements?

Aluminum is non-combustible under ASTM E136, and Knotwood profiles are ASTM E84 Class A rated and CAN/ULC-S114 fire-tested, with Florida Product Approvals 27460.1 through 27460.4. Compliance is never assessed on the cladding alone. The complete wall system, including the siding, framing, weather barrier, insulation, fasteners, and cavity protection, has to be tested or assessed as a code-compliant assembly. Those requirements are set by the applicable I-Code as adopted and amended by your jurisdiction, and in Wildland-Urban Interface areas there is usually a state overlay on top of the base code, such as California’s Chapter 7A. What lengths does Knotwood aluminum siding come in?

Standard stock length is 18.5 ft. Profiles are cut to suit the setout, so the panel layout and the number of joints are worked out from the elevation rather than from the stock length. Tell us the run and we will confirm what is available for the profile you are specifying.

Classic Boards and V Line Boards suit a flatter, more contemporary facade, with Classic Boards adjustable to give either a shadow line reveal or a flush finish from the same profile. Castellated Boards add dimensional depth in a single piece, and Fixed Gap Boards sit with a 5/8 inch open joint between boards.

Does aluminum siding require painting?

No. All Knotwood siding profiles are factory-finished and do not require site painting or sealing. The finish is applied before the product leaves the factory in Phoenix, Arizona. Wood grain and powder coat finishes are both available, and neither requires ongoing site maintenance of the kind that wood siding demands.

How is aluminum siding installed, and can it be installed vertically?

Aluminum siding profiles are fixed to a substructure attached to the building framing. Each profile type uses a specific fixing method suited to its geometry. Depending on the profile, boards can be installed horizontally for a traditional siding look or vertically for a more contemporary facade orientation. For retrofit applications, the existing substrate must be structurally sound and properly prepared before installation begins.

Can aluminum siding be used for interior feature walls?

Yes. Knotwood aluminum siding profiles are used for both exterior facades and interior feature walls in residential and commercial construction. Wood grain aluminum siding, also called wood look aluminum siding, is aluminum siding with a sublimated wood grain finish that replicates the appearance of natural wood. It gives buildings the warm look of wood siding without the maintenance schedule. The aluminum substrate does not rot, split, or require periodic painting or sealing, making it a low-maintenance alternative for residential and commercial facades in the US market.

What is aluminum lap siding?

Aluminum lap siding refers to a beveled profile with a thicker lower edge and a thinner top edge, creating the overlapping, layered look of traditional lap siding. Is aluminum siding a good alternative to vinyl or fiber cement siding?

They are three different products with three different jobs. Vinyl is the lowest cost of the three and the quickest to install, and it does that job well. Fiber cement is heavier, needs cutting on site, and is usually painted. Aluminum is non-combustible, arrives factory-finished, and is light for its coverage, which matters on a retrofit. Where aluminum earns its place is on a project where the facade is part of the architecture and the finish has to be a specific wood grain or color, rather than one where the brief is to close the wall in as cheaply as possible.
