Flip Aluminum Battens use a genuinely simple system: a single universal profile that flips onto itself. Cut two identical lengths, flip one to mirror the other, and press them together until they click, forming a solid rectangular batten with concealed fixings on the inside face only. Available across sixteen sizes, from a slim 1 1/2" x 5/8" through to a bold 8" x 8".

What are Flip Aluminum Battens?

Flip Aluminum Battens are Knotwood’s self-mating batten system. A single universal profile flips onto itself: one half fixes to the substructure, the second flips and clicks over it to form a complete hollow rectangular batten with every fixing concealed. It’s a decorative system, well suited to feature walls, garage doors, screens, columns and curved wall applications.

How does the Flip Batten system work?

Each Flip Batten uses two identical profile halves. The first half fixes to the substructure, then the second half flips and clicks onto it to form a complete hollow rectangular batten, fully concealing all fixings between the two mated halves.

Are Flip Battens suitable for structural use?

No. Flip Battens are designed as a decorative profile or assembly and are not engineered for structural purposes.

Yes. The self-mating universal profile makes Flip Battens suitable for columns and curved wall applications where standard batten systems can’t follow the surface geometry.

What design applications suit Flip Battens?

Flip Battens are a strong fit for decorative feature walls, garage doors, and architectural screens, projects wanting a genuinely simple two-piece install without extra bracket hardware, and applications like columns or curved walls that standard flat batten systems can’t follow.

Can Flip Battens be retrofitted to existing structures?

Yes. Flip Battens are designed for retrofit and can be installed over an existing structure using top hat section, metal hollow section or wood framing, provided the substructure is plumb, level and structurally sound.

Are Flip Battens fire rated for use in high-risk zones?

Aluminum is non-combustible under ASTM E136, and Knotwood profiles are ASTM E84 Class A rated and CAN/ULC-S114 fire-tested, so the batten does not contribute fuel to a fire. That matters in Wildland-Urban Interface zones and other fire-risk areas, but it does not make the wall compliant on its own. Fire performance is assessed on the complete assembly, including the substructure, the surface behind the battens and the cavity between them. Those requirements come from the applicable I-Code as adopted by your jurisdiction, with a state overlay such as California’s Chapter 7A in WUI areas. Are Flip Battens suitable for coastal environments?

Aluminum does not rot or absorb moisture, so a batten run near the coast does not deteriorate the way a wood one does. Corrosion resistance itself depends on the finish specification and the exposure rather than on the metal alone, so a beachfront elevation and a site a few miles inland are two different specifications. In marine conditions, 304 or 316 grade stainless fasteners are used with an insulating barrier or a rubber or neoprene washer to prevent galvanic contact between dissimilar metals. How do I maintain Flip Battens?

Periodic washing with a soft broom and water, using a pH-neutral detergent, is all that’s required. No painting, sealing or specialist treatments are needed.

How do Flip Battens compare with wood battens over time?

Flip Battens do not rot, warp or crack, and they do not need sanding, oiling or recoating. The wood grain finish is applied in the factory rather than on site, so the batten arrives finished and stays that way without a coating cycle. Wood battens in the same exposure need retreatment on a schedule, and on a facade or a screen that means access equipment as well as materials. Are Flip Battens a sustainable product?

Flip Battens are manufactured in Phoenix, Arizona from recyclable aluminum, using VOC-free powder coatings and non-chromate pre-treatments. Because the finish is applied in the factory, there is no staining, sealing or recoating over the life of the installation, which removes the ongoing consumption of maintenance products a wood batten run needs.
