Knotwood aluminum privacy screens and louver systems are used on residential and commercial buildings across multiple applications. The same screen or louver system that works on a boundary fence also works on a balcony, a building facade or an interior partition, so a project can carry one consistent aesthetic across every part of the build.
Homeowners use them for front yard privacy, courtyard screening and boundary treatments. Builders use them to give a railing infill more privacy than a standard open picket. Architects specify them as a facade element in their own right, adding shadow and depth to an elevation. Commercial projects use them as semi-open interior partitions between spaces.
Wood privacy screening warps, rots and needs regular staining to hold its look, especially on fences and boundaries exposed to the weather. Knotwood’s aluminum screens and louvers carry the same batten and blade-based privacy control without the upkeep. Spacing and blade angle are fixed at fabrication to suit the application: tighter or steeper where privacy is the priority, wider or operable for airflow on a shaded facade.
Knotwood Screen Systems use batten profiles spaced at intervals to balance privacy and airflow. They work well for fencing, railing infill and facade applications where a consistent screened look is the priority.
Knotwood Louver Systems swap flat battens for angled blades. Fixed louvers are set one direction permanently, and operable louvers let the occupant adjust light and airflow on demand.
Aluminum privacy screens use batten profiles spaced at intervals to control sightlines, manage airflow and add an architectural layer to a facade or outdoor space. Closer spacing reduces visibility through the screen. Wider spacing allows more air movement and light but provides less visual privacy. The spacing is set during fabrication, so it needs to be decided at the specification stage.
Screen panels use flat batten profiles to create a fixed decorative or privacy element. Louver panels use angled blades instead of flat battens. Fixed louvers direct light and airflow in a specific direction. Operable louvers can be adjusted by the user to increase privacy, airflow or light as needed. Both system types use modular aluminum profiles with concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes.
A screen railing uses closely spaced aluminum profiles as the infill panel within a railing system. Unlike standard open pickets, a screen infill provides visual privacy alongside the guard itself. This makes it most useful on decks and balconies that face neighbors or a street at close range, or on elevated decks where a more substantial-looking infill is preferred to an open picket system. Guard height and loading are set by the building code for the occupancy and are confirmed per project.
Yes. Aluminum screen fencing is a low-maintenance alternative to wood fencing for front yard and side boundaries. Aluminum does not warp, swell, split or require periodic sanding and resealing. There is no sanding or resealing cycle at any point, which is a practical advantage wherever wood fencing faces constant sun, moisture and temperature variation.
Knotwood screens are available in solid powder coat colors and in wood-look aluminum finishes, with a wood grain surface over a powder coated base. Black and charcoal are widely specified for contemporary residential screening, and wood grain suits projects where the screen reads as part of a wood-look outdoor or facade scheme. The full range is shown on the Knotwood finishes page.
The appropriate spacing depends on what the screen needs to do. A screen providing visual privacy from neighbors needs tighter spacing than one used for sun shading or to define a zone. Viewing angle matters as much as the gap itself, since a screen reads as more solid when viewed obliquely than head on. Profile depth plays a part too, because a deeper batten blocks more of the diagonal sightline at the same spacing. Knotwood’s specification team advises on spacing options for a given application.
It depends on what the screen is fixing to. Freestanding runs use posts set into footings, with the footing depth determined by the height of the screen and the wind exposure of the site. Screens fixed to an existing structure use brackets sized to the substrate, so a fixing into masonry differs from one into a wood or steel frame. Railing infill is different again, because the panel fixes to the building’s framing and forms part of the guard assembly. Fixings are concealed in all cases, so nothing is visible on the finished face. Knotwood’s technical team works through the fixing detail with the installer.
Aluminum is a noncombustible material. What a specific project requires is a separate question, because assemblies are assessed as a system rather than by material alone under the International Building Code. In Wildland-Urban Interface zones, requirements are set at state and county level, with California Chapter 7A the most widely referenced. Knotwood’s technical team confirms the documentation available for a given location and application.
Aluminum does not rust, which is why it is commonly specified in coastal regions where salt air accelerates the deterioration of steel and untreated wood. Close to the ocean, marine-grade stainless fasteners are usually required, and the threshold varies with the site and the prevailing wind. Wind performance is set by the design rather than the material: the height, the open area of the screen, the post spacing and the design wind pressure for the site under ASCE 7. In High-Velocity Hurricane Zones, approval is handled at state and county level, and Knotwood’s technical team confirms the fixing detail for a given location and screen height.
Knotwood screen systems carry a standard 15-year warranty, with up to 25 years on selected finishes. Terms vary by finish and by the exposure of the site, so a coastal installation carries different conditions to an inland one. Full terms are set out on the Knotwood warranty page, and Knotwood’s sales team confirms what applies to a specific profile before specification.
Knotwood aluminum screens are used for boundary fencing, balcony and deck railing infill, building facade screens, sun shading panels, interior partitions and garden screening. The same screen system that works on a front yard fence also works on a building facade or an interior divider, which is useful when a consistent screen aesthetic is needed across multiple parts of a project.
Yes. Facade screens are a common architectural application. Screen panels mounted on a building facade function as a second skin that adds depth, shadow and texture to the exterior. The profiles create visual rhythm across the facade surface. This approach is used on both residential and commercial buildings, from feature elements around windows and entries to full-elevation treatments on commercial projects.
Yes. Aluminum screens do not warp, swell, split or attract insects, and the powder-coated finish does not require periodic painting or sealing. Washing down with water and a pH-neutral detergent handles dirt, pollen and general grime. Coastal locations benefit from more frequent washing to clear salt deposits before they sit on the finish. Abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners should be avoided, as both can permanently mark the powder coat. On a screen, the task worth doing annually is clearing leaf litter and debris from between the battens.
Inspiration
Set just steps from the glistening coastline, these homes follow the rhythm of daily life. A bold modern composition of concrete and glass is offset by an undulating Grey Ash screen, forming an instantly recognizable facade that balances structural strength with layered depth and visual intrigue.
Inspiration
A coastal take on Palm Springs style, Albatross House brings mid-century modern design to the coast. Clean lines and sweeping stone curves meet neutral concrete textures and horizontal Nordic Oak shutters and timber look aluminium soffits, crafting a balanced aesthetic that connects effortlessly with the natural surroundings.
Inspiration
On one of Burleigh's most coveted streets, this modern coastal home layers Knotwood aluminum battens and tumbled silver travertine to create refined depth. White Ash battens unify screens, garage doors, ceilings and awnings, adding texture, privacy and sun protection, while seamlessly connecting interior and exterior living spaces.
Inspiration
Caba Hill Beach House captures its oceanfront setting with angular concrete planes and Silver Wattle battens. Sandstone walls and polished concrete ground the design, while mid-century lines heighten its sculptural form. The result is a coastal sanctuary where raw strength meets refined minimalism.
