Knotwood aluminum room dividers and partition screens create semi-open separations between spaces in residential and commercial interiors. Unlike a solid wall, an aluminum room divider partially separates spaces while allowing some light, air and visual connection to pass through, and unlike a curtain or furniture arrangement, it is fixed and architectural.
Homeowners use aluminum room dividers to separate an open plan living and dining area, screen a home office from a living space or define a semi-enclosed entry zone. Architects and designers specify them for office build-outs, hospitality and retail interiors, dividing open plan space or defining a waiting area without full wall construction.
A wood room divider can look good when new, but knocks, humidity variation and daily wear cause it to mark, swell and need refinishing sooner than a commercial interior can afford. Knotwood’s aluminum profiles deliver the same natural, architectural appearance without those trade-offs. They are durable, low maintenance, and they hold their finish through years of daily use without site painting or sealing.
Because aluminum room dividers are made to order, the height, width and batten spacing are set to suit the opening rather than the other way around. A divider can run floor to ceiling as a full-height screen, stop short of the ceiling so the room still reads as one volume or sit on a low base to define a zone without closing it off. That decision is usually made on the floor plan, not on site.
Knotwood Screen Systems use spaced batten profiles to create a semi-open partition, near-solid for a private office divide, or widely spaced to simply define a zone without blocking the view.
An aluminum partition screen creates a semi-open separation between spaces using spaced aluminum batten or screen profiles. Unlike a solid wall, a screen partition partially separates spaces while allowing some light, air and visual connection to pass through. Unlike a curtain or furniture arrangement, it is fixed and architectural in character. This makes it a practical choice for spaces that need definition without full enclosure.
In residential interiors, aluminum room dividers are used to separate an open plan living and dining area without fully enclosing either space, to screen a home office or study from a living area and to create a semi-enclosed entry zone in an open floor plan.
In commercial interiors, aluminum partition screens divide open plan office spaces, create semi-enclosed zones in hospitality and retail environments, and define waiting areas or reception spaces without requiring full wall construction. They are used in office build-outs, restaurant interiors, hotel lobbies, retail stores and public building entry zones where flexible, architectural space division is needed. Because a partition screen is not a fire-rated or load-bearing element, it sits outside the wall assembly requirements set by the International Building Code, though egress width and accessible clearances still govern where a screen can be placed.
Closer batten spacing creates near-solid visual separation while still allowing air and some light to pass through the screen. Wider spacing defines a zone without meaningfully blocking the view. A screen designed to visually separate a private office from a waiting area needs different spacing density to a screen used purely to define a dining zone within an open plan space. Density is set during fabrication and needs to be decided at the specification stage.
Knotwood aluminum screens are fixed architectural elements, not movable room dividers or temporary screens. They are installed as a permanent or semi-permanent feature of the interior build-out. This gives them an architectural quality and material consistency that movable panel systems do not achieve, but it also means the layout needs to be confirmed before installation.
Wood dividers can look good when new, but commercial interiors put real demands on a material. Knocks, humidity variation and daily wear cause wood to mark, swell, and need refinishing sooner than a space designed to last for years can afford. Knotwood aluminum profiles deliver the same natural, architectural appearance without those trade-offs. The partition systems are durable and low maintenance, and the factory-applied finish means no site painting, sealing or periodic recoating over the life of the fit-out.
Aluminum partition screens are available in the full Knotwood finish range, including wood-look aluminum options and solid powder coated colors. Wood grain finishes suit hospitality and residential interior applications where a warm, natural material aesthetic is preferred. Solid powder coated finishes in black, charcoal and white are popular for contemporary commercial and office interiors. Because partitions sit indoors with no UV or weather exposure, the full range is available without the finish restrictions that apply to some exterior positions. The current US range is set out on our finishes page.
Yes. Fixed louver systems shape light and sightlines within a space by design. Operable louver systems let a space shift as its use changes through the day, allowing the user to dial in more privacy, more airflow, or more light as needed. Both fixed and operable louver systems are available from Knotwood for partition applications, offering a level of adaptability that fixed screen panels do not provide.
Yes. Knotwood aluminum screens are used in hospitality and retail environments to create semi-enclosed dining zones, define display areas and add an architectural layer to open plan spaces. The durability and ease of cleaning of aluminum profiles are practical advantages in high-traffic hospitality and retail interiors where the partition needs to hold its appearance through daily use.
The right system depends on what the partition needs to do: the level of visual separation required, whether light transmission matters, whether adjustability is needed, and how the partition reads as part of the overall interior design. Knotwood’s sales and specification team can advise on profile selection, screen density, finish options and installation methods for specific commercial and residential partition applications.
Not in the way a solid wall does, and that is worth settling at the design stage rather than after installation. Aluminum room dividers are spaced batten systems, so sound passes through the gaps along with the light and the air. What they do is break up a long sightline and give a space some acoustic texture, not acoustic separation. If a project needs a measured sound rating between two zones, a partition screen is the wrong element and a full wall assembly is required. Where the brief is about defining a zone rather than isolating it, a divider does the job without closing the space in.
Fixing depends on the substrate and the height of the screen. Most aluminum room dividers are fixed top and bottom, into the floor structure and into the ceiling framing or a suspended ceiling grid support. Where a full-height fix is not possible, a base plate or a side fix to an adjacent wall can carry the screen instead. The fixing method needs to be confirmed before fabrication, because it affects both the profile length and the setout. Send us the floor plan and the ceiling detail and our team will confirm the method for that specific position.
Backed by a standard 15-year warranty and up to 25 years on selected finishes. See our warranty page for the terms that apply to this profile. Interior room dividers sit in one of the least demanding environments an aluminum product can be installed in, with no UV load and no weather exposure, so the maintenance requirement over that period is minimal.
Inspiration
Drawing from Palm Springs' enduring appeal, these homes combine clean lines, flat planes and a vibrant yet restrained aesthetic.
