Knotwood aluminum outdoor structures cover both the deck underfoot and the pergola overhead, specified for outdoor rooms where low maintenance and long service life matter more than the lowest upfront cost. Carrying the same wood grain finish across the decking, the pergola and any fence or balustrade screening gives the space a consistent quality from floor to roof. Because aluminum outdoor structures are made to the project rather than bought in stock sizes, the deck, the posts and the beams all land in the same finish and the same batch.
An outdoor room gets used differently to the rest of the house. It takes full weather on one side and daily traffic on the other, and it is the part of the property most likely to be looked at from indoors. Knotwood systems are quoted, made to the project, and installed by a trade rather than shipped as a flat-pack kit, which suits a space being designed as part of the building rather than added to the back of it.
Wood decking and pergolas need oiling, staining or painting on a cycle, and they rot, warp and split under repeated weather exposure. Aluminum does none of that. The finish is applied in the factory rather than on site, so there is no annual coating job on a surface that is walked on and rained on in equal measure, and no scaffolding required to reach the overhead structure.
Knotwood Decking boards give an outdoor area a natural wood look with none of the maintenance. It's the most popular decking finish in the range for residential applications.
Knotwood Pergola systems are architectural-grade outdoor structures, not kit pergolas. The Geo Structure system scales from residential garden projects to multi-bay commercial terraces.
Knotwood offers aluminum decking boards and aluminum pergola systems for outdoor living areas. These two system types can be combined to create a cohesive outdoor space with matched finish and profile across the floor surface and the overhead structure. Both systems are specified for residential and commercial projects where low maintenance and long service life are priorities.
Aluminum does not rot, warp or split, and it does not need oiling, staining or painting on a cycle. Wood decking needs that upkeep to stay ahead of weathering, and composite boards sit somewhere between the two: they do not need coating, but they are a wood and polymer product rather than a metal one, so they behave differently in heat and in fire. Aluminum is non-combustible, which matters in some jurisdictions and not in others. The honest trade-off is cost and lead time, since aluminum decking is specified and made to the deck rather than bought by the linear foot.
Wood grain aluminum decking gives an outdoor area the appearance of natural wood without the upkeep that a wood deck asks for. The finish is applied in the factory, so there is no site sealing or painting at installation and no recoating later. It is the most popular Knotwood decking finish for residential projects and works in both contemporary and traditional outdoor living areas. The current range is set out on our finishes page.
Aluminum is non-combustible, which is why it comes up in Wildland-Urban Interface zones and other fire-risk areas where the deck surface and the structure above it are both exposed to ember attack. WUI requirements are set through the I-Codes and state amendments such as California’s Chapter 7A, and they are assessed on the assembly rather than on a single material. Send us the applicable code and the deck detail and we will confirm what test evidence is available for the specific profile.
The Geo Structure is Knotwood’s structural system for aluminum outdoor structures, used on residential and commercial projects. It is designed as part of a building’s overall architectural composition rather than as a kit pergola. It can be specified at residential garden scale or at multi-bay commercial scale for hospitality terraces and public outdoor structures.
Yes. A deck with a matching aluminum pergola structure creates an outdoor room with consistent material character across the floor and the overhead element. Using the same wood grain finish on the decking, the pergola and any fence or balustrade screening gives the outdoor space a cohesive, designed quality. This coordinated approach is a common specification for residential and hospitality outdoor spaces.
Because there is no coating cycle, the deck does not need to be cleared and closed off for maintenance work each season, which matters more on a commercial terrace than on a courtyard at home.
Yes. The Geo Structure pergola system is specifically designed to scale from residential garden applications up to multi-bay commercial scale for hospitality terraces and public outdoor structures. Restaurant and resort operators use aluminum outdoor structures on terraces that take heavy use and full weather without a maintenance window available to close them.
In direct sun, yes, the same as most deck surfaces. Surface temperature depends far more on the color and the exposure than on the material, so a dark finish on a west-facing deck with no shade will be hot in the afternoon, and a lighter finish or a deck under a pergola will not. If the deck will be used barefoot in summer, choose a lighter finish and plan the shade at the same time as the deck rather than afterwards. This is worth raising early, because it is a design decision rather than something that can be fixed once the boards are down.
Slip resistance on an exterior deck is measured under ANSI A326.3 in the U.S., and it depends on the surface texture of the board rather than on the metal underneath it. Board profile, finish and whether the deck is likely to be wet or shaded all feed into the choice. If the deck runs to a pool edge, a spa, or an entry that gets tracked wet, tell us at specification stage and we will confirm which profile suits and what test data is available for it.
Backed by a standard 15-year warranty and up to 25 years on selected finishes. See our warranty page for the terms that apply to this profile.
Posts are either set into concrete footings or base-plated and anchored to an existing slab, deck or footing pad. The footing size and post spacing come from the span, the roof area and the wind exposure of the site, because an overhead structure takes uplift as well as downward load, and uplift is usually what governs the design. On a retrofit over an existing slab, the slab thickness and edge distance need checking before anchors are specified. Send us the site plan, the intended span and the location and our team will work through the setout with you.
Yes, and most residential pergolas are. An attached structure fixes back to the wall or to the fascia at one end and sits on posts at the other, which reduces the post count and ties the outdoor room to the building. The connection needs to land on structure rather than on cladding, so the wall build-up matters, and flashing at the junction has to be detailed so water is not driven back into the wall. A freestanding structure avoids all of that and is the simpler option where the deck sits away from the house. Both are available, and the choice usually comes down to where the shade is needed rather than to cost.
Inspiration
Centered on courtyards and atriums that embrace existing trees, the design invites natural light and space to flow freely, blurring boundaries between inside and out. Silver Wattle Knotwood timber look aluminum battens extend across gates, screens, cladding, decking and fencing, cultivating a tranquil, cohesive connection with nature.
Inspiration
Elevated above the city, the building's bold black and white facade evokes cascading ribbons, while the rooftop retreat offers sculptural calm. Curved Spotted Gum battens form pergolas and awnings, dappling shade across alfresco spaces, their warm timber tones balancing the urban intensity with softness and refinement.
