Knotwood aluminum profiles are used on garage door surrounds, entry facades and the wall areas around garage openings. Knotwood does not manufacture the garage door itself. What it supplies is the architectural aluminum treatment of the wall the door sits in, which on most homes is the largest single surface on the front elevation. An aluminum garage door surround is what turns that wall from a blank panel into part of the design.
Homeowners use cladding and batten profiles on the wall panels beside and above the garage door to give a front elevation a finished, contemporary look that plain rendered or painted brick doesn’t achieve. Builders and designers extend the same treatment to the entry porch, the front facade and sometimes the perimeter fence or gate, so the front of the house reads as one considered design rather than a garage bolted onto a house.
Painted or rendered surrounds need repainting to hold their look, and wood accents around a garage entry sit in full sun for most of the day with rain running down them. Aluminum profiles take that exposure without absorbing moisture and carry a factory-applied finish, so the surround does not become a maintenance item on the most visible elevation of the house. Knotwood’s aluminum cladding and battens give the same warm, natural material appearance in a wood grain finish, without that upkeep.
Knotwood Cladding Systems give garage surround wall panels a clean, continuous, wood-look finish. They work well as horizontal cladding beside and above the garage door.
Knotwood Batten Systems add a vertical accent to a garage entry. They work well combined with cladding on different wall sections to create depth and contrast.
No. Knotwood does not manufacture garage doors, door panels, tracks or opening hardware. What Knotwood supplies is the aluminum cladding and batten systems used on the wall around the opening: the panels beside and above the door, the columns either side and the entry facade the garage sits within. If you are searching for an aluminum garage door, the door itself comes from a door manufacturer, and the surround comes from us. The two are usually specified separately and installed by different trades.
It is the wall area framing the garage opening, finished in aluminum cladding or battens rather than render, brick, or painted board. On most homes the garage occupies a large share of the front elevation, so the surround does more visual work than the door. Cladding the surround in a wood grain finish gives the front of the house a warm, considered look while keeping the material low maintenance in a position that gets full sun and driving rain.
A painted or rendered surround needs repainting on a cycle, and it is the most visible wall on the house, so the wear shows. Wood accents in the same position weather and need sealing. An aluminum garage door surround carries a factory-applied finish, does not absorb moisture and does not warp. The practical result is that the front elevation keeps its finish without becoming a maintenance job you can see from the street.
Knotwood does not supply or approve cladding applied to a moving door leaf. A garage door is a balanced, counterweighted assembly, and adding weight to the panel changes how it operates and sits outside the door manufacturer’s design. Some door manufacturers offer their own wood-look aluminum door finishes, and that is the correct route if the door face itself needs to match. Knotwood’s scope stops at the fixed wall around the opening.
The full Knotwood finish range applies, including wood grain options and solid powder coated colors. Wood grain is the common choice on residential entries where the surround is meant to read as a warm material against masonry or render. Solid colors in darker tones are often used where the surround is meant to recede and let the door or entry take the attention. The current US range is set out on our finishes page.
Both, usually. Cladding profiles fit edge to edge for a continuous panel, which suits the broad wall areas beside and above the door. Aluminum battens are spaced, so they read as texture and shadow rather than as a surface, which suits a vertical accent beside the opening or a column. The most common approach on a garage entry is cladding on the main panels with a batten section on one element, so the elevation has depth instead of one flat plane.
Yes, and it is the usual reason people specify it. The same profile and finish can carry from the garage surround onto the entry porch, the front facade, the soffit above and in some cases the perimeter fence or gate. That is what makes the front of the house read as one design rather than a garage bolted onto a building. Worth planning across all those elements in one order, since matching finish batches later is harder than matching them at the start.
Profiles are fixed to a batten substrate or directly to the framing, set out to suit the profile and the wind exposure of the elevation. Around an opening, the setout matters more than on a plain wall, because the reveals, head and jambs all have to line through with the panel joints. Wall covering and wind load requirements are set by the International Residential Code and the local adoption. Our team can confirm the fixing method and spacing for a specific profile and site.
It should not, provided the thickness of the cladding build-up is allowed for before the door is ordered or the opening is framed. Cladding the jambs and head reduces the finished opening slightly, and a sectional door needs its headroom and side room clearances kept clear of the track. This is a coordination question rather than a product question, and it is much cheaper to resolve on the drawings than after the door is installed. Bring the door manufacturer’s clearance sheet to the setout conversation.
Washing down with water to clear road dust and grime, at whatever interval the position calls for. A surround facing a busy street or a gravel driveway will need it more often than one set back behind a garden. There is no painting, sealing or refinishing cycle.
Backed by a standard 15-year warranty and up to 25 years on selected finishes. See our warranty page for the terms that apply to this profile.
Yes. Retrofitting an aluminum garage door surround over an existing wall is common on renovations, and it is usually more straightforward than the same work on a new build because the opening and the door are already set. The existing surface is checked for flatness and condition, a batten substrate is fixed over it, and the profiles run over the top. The build-up adds thickness, so the reveals around the opening need to be detailed to suit and any existing trim usually comes off first. Where the door is staying, the cladding stops clear of the track and the door seal. Where the door is being replaced at the same time, the new aluminum garage door surround and the door can be set out together, which gives the cleaner junction of the two.
Inspiration
