A facade is a long-term commitment. The finish has to look right on day one and hold up long after the scaffolding comes down. Knotwood’s aluminum facade siding and batten systems cover both requirements: wood grain finishes on an extruded aluminum substrate, specified on residential and commercial projects.
Architects specify an aluminum facade to deliver a considered exterior on commercial builds. Builders use them to match an existing facade or deliver a consistent finish across a new development. Homeowners use them when a front elevation needs to perform for decades. The profiles and the performance are the same for all of them.
Wood siding on a facade warps, swells, attracts termites and needs regular sealing to keep its look. Knotwood’s aluminum profiles carry the same natural wood grain appearance without the upkeep. Aluminum is noncombustible and will not warp, and the finish is applied at the factory, so the facade holds up without the sealing and refinishing cycle wood siding demands.
Knotwood Cladding Systems form a continuous, finished wall surface. They work well for full elevation coverage where a clean, wood grain finish is the priority.
Knotwood Batten Systems layer up a facade with shadow lines and depth. They work well for feature facades, entryways and any exterior where rhythm and texture matter to the design.
Aluminum facade cladding is an exterior wall lining system using extruded aluminum profiles fixed to the building substrate. It is used on residential and commercial buildings to create a durable, finished exterior surface. Knotwood systems cover both solid siding profiles that sit flat against the wall and open batten screens that stand proud on a frame, creating depth and shadow in front of the wall behind.
Aluminum siding profiles sit flat or close to the wall and create a low-profile, continuous facade surface. Batten screens sit proud of the wall on a frame system, creating a second skin with depth, shadow and air movement behind the screen. Both approaches are available within the Knotwood range. The right choice depends on the design intent and how much texture, depth and shadow the facade needs to provide.
Cladding and siding describe the same thing: an exterior wall covering fixed over the building’s structure. Siding is the standard residential term and cladding is more common in commercial and architectural specification, but both refer to the same profiles, the same fixing systems and the same finishes. Knotwood uses both terms across this site for that reason. A specification that reads cladding and an order that reads siding describe the same product.
Knotwood’s range covers both solid siding profiles and open batten screen applications, so a single supplier handles the flat wall surface and the feature screen on the same building. Knotwood sells direct to contractors and specifiers, with samples, technical data sheets and specification support available to architects and design professionals. Systems are best compared on profile range, finish warranty and available documentation.
Knotwood aluminum facade profiles include Classic Boards, V Line Boards, Weatherboards, Castellated Boards and Fixed Gap Boards, each giving a different surface texture and light behavior on the elevation. All work as direct wall linings rather than screens in front of another surface. The profiles are factory-finished and do not require site painting, which suits projects where a fast, low-disruption installation is a priority.
Wood grain aluminum siding gives the facade the appearance of natural wood cladding. The finish is applied at the factory and does not require site painting, sealing or periodic recoating. The aluminum substrate does not rot, warp or split, so the facade holds up without the sealing and recoating that real wood siding demands. Wood grain is the most widely specified finish across the Knotwood range.
Aluminum is a noncombustible material. What a specific building requires is a separate question, because exterior wall assemblies are assessed as a system rather than by material alone under the International Building Code. Where the code requires an exterior wall assembly to be tested to NFPA 285, that test applies to the complete assembly rather than to any single product. In Wildland-Urban Interface zones, requirements are set at state and county level, with California Chapter 7A the most widely referenced. Knotwood’s technical team confirms the documentation available for a given building type, height and jurisdiction.
Aluminum does not rust, which is why it is commonly specified in coastal regions where salt air accelerates the deterioration of steel and untreated wood. Wind performance is determined by the design rather than the material: the fastener pattern, the substrate, the panel size and the design wind pressure for the site under ASCE 7. In High-Velocity Hurricane Zones, Florida and the Gulf Coast in particular, product approval is handled at state and county level, and Knotwood’s technical team confirms what documentation is available for that jurisdiction.
Knotwood facade systems carry a standard 15-year warranty, with up to 25 years on selected finishes. Warranty terms vary by finish and by the exposure of the site, so a coastal installation carries different conditions to an inland one. Full terms are set out on the Knotwood warranty page, and Knotwood’s sales team confirms what applies to a specific profile before specification.
Yes. Aluminum batten screens are used on both residential and commercial buildings. On residential homes, a batten screen on the upper level or around a garage entry is a common approach for adding texture to an otherwise flat facade. The gap between the batten and the wall allows air movement behind the screen, which is how a rainscreen assembly is designed to drain and dry. Thermal outcomes depend on the wall build-up, the insulation and the ventilation strategy rather than on the screen alone, and Knotwood’s technical team confirms what the system can accommodate from a wall section.
The same profiles used on building facades are available for soffits, ceilings and interior walls, allowing a consistent finish to carry across the full building. Wood grain and solid color options are shown on the Knotwood finishes page.
Architects and design professionals can request samples, technical data sheets and specification support directly from Knotwood. Knotwood’s sales team provides product recommendations for specific project types, installation guidance and finish selection assistance. Knotwood facade systems are designed for specification-grade projects rather than retail self-install.
Aluminum facade siding requires very little maintenance, which is the practical difference from wood siding. There is no sanding, sealing or repainting cycle at any point. Washing down with water and a pH-neutral detergent handles dirt, pollen and general grime. Coastal locations benefit from more frequent washing to clear salt deposits before they sit on the finish. Abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners should be avoided, as both can permanently mark the powder coat. The annual task is clearing debris from around trims and penetrations so water keeps draining as the assembly is designed to.
Inspiration
Nero captivates with a commanding street presence and bold architectural expression. A moody palette of Monument aluminum cladding and rendered concrete creates intrigue and sophistication, setting the tone for luxurious living.
Inspiration
ARA comprises six residential buildings that blend timeless form with contemporary function, respecting Leichhardt’s heritage.
Inspiration
The Finn is anchored in its coastal setting. Venetian render recalls the softness of sand beneath bare feet, while enduring travertine reflects the strength of the headland.
Inspiration
The building's facade is defined by a linear, wave inspired screen echoing the rhythm of the nearby beach. Spruce horizontal aluminum soffits and vertical elements create layered depth and subtle movement.
