Knotwood aluminum balustrade systems are an architectural alternative to standard aluminum railing. They use screen panel infill rather than open pickets, so the balustrade gives visual privacy as well as edge protection. Most deck railing sold in the U.S. is a picket or cable system bought in stock lengths. This is a specified system, made to the opening and installed by a trade.
Homeowners use them on decks and balconies that face neighbors or a street at close range, where a more substantial infill is wanted instead of an open picket system. Builders specify them on multi-story balconies and exterior stairs, where the edge needs protecting and the space needs screening at the same time, and on rooftop terraces where the balustrade is visible from the street below.
A picket railing does its job at the edge but gives no real privacy, because the gaps let sightlines straight through. A Knotwood screen balustrade uses much closer profile spacing, so the same element that protects the edge also screens the deck from the neighbors and the street. Panel height, spacing and the connection back to the structure are all set for the project rather than taken from a stock kit, which is what lets the balustrade suit the position it is going into.
Knotwood Screen Systems use closely spaced profiles as balustrade infill, providing visual privacy alongside fall protection. They work well for decks, balconies and stairs facing neighboring properties or the street.
Knotwood aluminum balustrade systems use screen panel infill rather than open pickets, so the railing screens the deck as well as protecting the edge. Retail aluminum deck railing kits are sold in stock heights and lengths for self-install, and they do the edge protection job well at a lower cost. A Knotwood balustrade is specified to the deck, made to the opening and installed by a trade, which is what you want when the railing is part of the design rather than a safety requirement to be satisfied.
Most standard aluminum deck railings use vertical pickets within a top and bottom rail. This meets fall protection requirements but does not provide meaningful privacy. A Knotwood screen balustrade uses screen profiles with much closer spacing, so the balustrade provides visual privacy from neighboring properties and the street while still meeting balustrade structural requirements. This is most useful on decks and balconies that face neighbors or a street at close range.
Guard requirements in the U.S. are set by the IRC for residential work and the IBC for commercial, as adopted and amended locally. In broad terms that means a minimum guard height, a limit on the size of opening the guard may contain, and a concentrated load and a uniform load the railing has to resist at the top. Those figures are set by the International Code Council and the jurisdiction, not by the product, and compliance is assessed on the installed assembly including the connection back to the structure, which is where most guards actually fail. Knotwood systems are engineered to the project rather than sold as a certified stock unit. Send us the deck framing detail, the guard height required and the location, and our team will confirm what can be supplied and what documentation comes with it.
Aluminum railing on decks at residential homes. Balcony railings on multi-story homes and apartment buildings. Aluminum stair railing on exterior stairs and entry steps. Rooftop terraces and podium edges where the balustrade is seen from below. The modular construction means panels can be configured to different heights and layouts to suit the project, with the same profile carrying consistently across multiple elements on the same build.
A balustrade sits in one of the most exposed positions on a property, at the edge of a deck, a balcony or a stair, taking weather from every direction and hands on it every day. Wood in that position splits, weathers and loosens at the fixings, and it needs recoating on a cycle to stay ahead of it. Aluminum does not absorb moisture, does not warp and carries a factory-applied finish rather than a site-applied one. The trade-off is the same across the range: a specified system rather than a stock kit, with the lead time that comes with it.
Available in the full Knotwood finish range. Black and charcoal powder coated finishes are common on contemporary homes, where the balustrade is meant to frame the view rather than compete with it. Wood grain finishes suit outdoor spaces built around a natural material palette, where the balustrade reads as part of the same wood-look scheme as the deck, the fence and the pergola. The current U.S. range is set out on our finishes page.
Yes. Knotwood aluminum railing and balustrade screen systems are used on balcony railings for multi-story homes and apartment buildings, and on commercial staircases and building balconies. The architectural quality of the screen profile suits commercial applications where the balustrade is a visible design element rather than a purely functional barrier. The modular construction adapts to different heights and configurations as required by the project.
Aluminum railing systems are low maintenance. They do not need periodic painting, sealing or staining, and washing down with water is enough for routine upkeep. The finish is applied in the factory rather than on site, so there is no recoating job at height on a balcony or a stair. If the project is in a coastal or marine location, tell us at specification stage, because exposure category affects the finish specification and the fixing selection.
Posts are fixed either through the deck surface into the framing below, or to the face of the rim joist, or to a slab with a base plate and anchors. Which one applies depends on how the deck is built, and it needs to be settled before the aluminum railing is made, because it changes the post length and the setout. The connection is the part that carries the load, so the framing has to be capable of taking it, and on a retrofit that usually means checking what is actually there rather than what the original drawings say. Send us the framing detail and our team will work through it with you.
Yes. Knotwood aluminum railing systems are built on the same architectural screen range as the fencing and partition systems. Using the same screen profile and finish on the balustrade, the perimeter fence, and any facade screening creates a cohesive, consistent material character across the entire outdoor space. This coordinated approach is common on residential projects where the deck, fence and balustrade are all part of the same design brief.
A guard and a handrail are two different things, and stairs usually need both. The guard stops a fall at the open edge. The handrail is the graspable element you hold going up and down, and the code sets its height, its profile and how far it has to be from the wall or the post. An aluminum handrail can be supplied to run with the aluminum railing in the same finish, so the stair reads as one system rather than two products bolted together. Tell us at specification stage whether the stair is residential or commercial, because the requirements differ and it affects the detail at the top and bottom of the flight.
That is the reason most people specify this system. A standard aluminum railing protects the edge and nothing else, so a deck overlooked by a neighbor or sitting close to the street stays overlooked. Closer profile spacing turns the same element into a deck privacy screen, and on an upper floor it does the same job as a balcony privacy screen without adding a second structure in front of the railing. How much privacy you get is set by the spacing, and it is worth deciding on the drawings, because it is the one thing you cannot adjust once the panels are made. Closer spacing gives more screening and less breeze through the deck, wider spacing gives the opposite.
No. Knotwood balustrade systems are not supplied, tested, or certified as pool safety barriers. Pool barriers in the U.S. are governed by the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code and IRC Appendix G as adopted locally, and they carry their own requirements for barrier height, opening sizes, gate self-closing and self-latching hardware, and the absence of footholds a child could climb. A guard at the edge of a deck and a barrier around a pool are two different elements with two different sets of rules, even when they look similar. Where a pool sits below or beside a deck, confirm the barrier requirement with your local building department before anything is ordered.
