Q: How do Stand-Up Battens compare with Geofix and Geoline?

Overview

Stand-Up Battens fix top and bottom rather than hanging off a shared rail. A Base Plate anchors each batten individually, the batten secures against it, and a matching Batten Bracket clicks over to close and conceal the fixing. Because every batten stands on its own bracket, there is no U-channel to run and nothing horizontal interrupting the line, which is what makes a floor-to-ceiling or wall-to-wall run read as one uninterrupted surface.

Mark the batten spacing first. The Base Plate fixes through its bottom slots, the batten positions against the larger face and secures through its slots, then the matching Batten Bracket presses into place until it clicks, closing the fixing behind the batten.

Stand-Up Battens are Knotwood’s vertical screen system, engineered for floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall installations. The system uses a three-part assembly: a Base Plate fixes to the surface, the batten secures to the Base Plate, and a Batten Bracket clicks over to close and conceal the fixing, producing a seamless screen with no visible hardware from top to bottom.

How does the Stand-Up Batten system differ from the Clip Batten system?

The Base Plate. Stand-Up Battens use a dedicated Base Plate fixed to the floor or surface, creating a true floor-to-ceiling span. Clip Battens use a wall or substructure-mounted bracket instead, which suits screening applied to a wall face rather than a free-standing vertical run.

How are Stand-Up Battens installed?

Mark and confirm the spacing on the surface first. The Base Plate fixes through the slots on its bottom face, the batten positions against the larger face of the plate and secures through those slots, then the matching Batten Bracket presses on until it clicks. The next Base Plate goes on at the marked spacing and the sequence repeats down the run.

What spacing and profile options are available?

Stand-Up Battens work with a wide range of Knotwood profiles, spaced at equal intervals to suit privacy, airflow and visual requirements. Base Plates come in two sizes, one for the 1 inch suite and one for the 2 inch suite, and both measure about 3-1/8 x 1-9/16 inches.

What surfaces can Stand-Up Battens be fixed to?

Steel, wood and concrete supporting surfaces. Use 304 or 316 stainless steel fasteners, or hot-dip galvanized in non-marine zones. An insulating barrier, a rubber or neoprene washer, is required at every fixing point to prevent galvanic contact between dissimilar metals. Confirm anchor specification and fixing spans with Knotwood for your project.

Are Stand-Up Battens suitable for security screening?

The system is positioned for applications needing screening alongside privacy: dividing spaces, closing perimeters and screening mechanical or service areas in commercial and civic environments. Contact our team for engineering documentation on a specific application.

What applications suit Stand-Up Batten screens?

Do Stand-Up Battens provide privacy?

Yes. The vertical configuration blocks sightlines through the screen. How much privacy depends on slat spacing and the angle you are viewing from, which is why spacing is set to the project rather than fixed.

How do Stand-Up Battens read visually at different distances?

At close range the individual spacing is prominent and you read the gaps. From further away the individual slats recede and the system creates a strong, directional vertical rhythm across the facade. Screens are often specified for the second reading and judged on the first, which is worth thinking about at design stage.

What is the reaction to fire classification of Stand-Up Battens?

Stand-Up Battens are 6063 T6 extruded aluminium, classified A2-s1,d0 to BS EN 13501-1. Under Approved Document B, A2-s1,d0 is a material of limited combustibility, which is the classification required for external wall construction on relevant buildings under Regulation 7(2). That applies where the screen forms part of a facade or a balcony rather than a garden boundary.
