An outdoor space only earns its place in daily life once it’s shaded properly, somewhere to sit through the middle of the day, somewhere that still feels like part of the home when the sun is high. Knotwood’s aluminium pergola systems are architectural outdoor shading structures built for the realities of UK conditions, finished to bring genuine timber warmth to an outdoor room rather than just covering it.
Aluminium pergolas are structural outdoor shading systems made from extruded aluminium profiles, specified in place of timber and steel structures for the same combination of reasons every other Knotwood range offers: structural performance without the ongoing maintenance a timber structure demands. Every system in the range shares modular aluminium construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes. It won’t rot, warp or swell through UK weather, heavy rain one week and full sun the next, and needs no attention in between beyond an occasional wash down.
For homeowners planning a garden upgrade or builders finishing an outdoor living area, that durability is what actually earns the structure its keep over years rather than one good summer. It’s just as suited to Outdoor Living projects that need decking and a pergola to match.

Geo Structure is Knotwood’s modular aluminium pergola system. Post covers enclose an existing support post, geometric beams span between them, and battens finish the top.
Yes, when engineered and installed correctly. What a structure will carry depends on its height, span, post spacing and how exposed the site is, so a courtyard pergola and one on an open plot are different calculations even at the same size. Engineering specifications are prepared for the specific structure against the relevant Eurocodes. Send us the dimensions and the location and we will confirm what it needs to be.
Geo Structure is a fixed structure. The batten spacing across the roof is set at design stage, which determines how much sun and shade the space gets, so the adjustment happens in the specification rather than day to day. Where a project needs adjustable shading through the day, that is an operable louvre system rather than a pergola, and our louvres range covers it.
Aluminium is non-combustible, which makes it a sensible material for a structure sitting over or near a fire pit or barbecue, a common UK garden setup. Clearances between an open flame and any overhead structure still need thinking about, since heat and smoke rise regardless of what the roof is made from. Contact our team with the layout and we will talk it through.
No, aluminium dissipates heat efficiently rather than holding it, keeping the structure comfortable even under strong summer sun. This matters more for a pergola than most outdoor structures, since the frame itself is what people are sitting directly under and sometimes touching.
Geo Structure builds around existing support posts rather than arriving as a complete free-standing frame, so the location needs suitable posts in place for the post covers, beams and battens to attach to. The posts themselves are supplied and installed as part of the site works, with their size, footing and structural capacity designed for the project. That allows both a structure set away from the house and one attached to it, provided the supporting structure is designed for it.
Aluminium is light compared with timber, which matters in an elevated position where the structure below has a defined load limit. What decides whether it can go on a particular deck or roof terrace is that supporting structure, not the pergola, and on a roof the waterproofing and the fixing detail need designing together. Send us the details of what it is going on and we will confirm what is involved.
An aluminium pergola system is a modular outdoor shading structure built from engineered aluminium profiles, posts and beams. Knotwood’s systems are designed for UK conditions, with architectural-grade finishes built to hold their colour and shape through the country’s mix of heavy rain, strong sun and everything in between, with significantly less maintenance than timber.
Often not, most garden pergolas fall within permitted development rights, but this depends on size, height, position relative to boundaries, and whether the property is in a conservation area or listed. Confirm with your local planning authority before proceeding, this is the same underlying question already covered on the Outdoor Living application page and shouldn’t be answered differently here.
Garden entertaining areas, poolside structures, deck and patio renovations, and commercial or hospitality outdoor spaces needing a durable, low-maintenance shading structure built for UK conditions.
Aluminium doesn’t rot, warp, split or need periodic painting or oiling the way timber does, and it holds its structural shape and finish through a UK winter as well as a UK summer, two very different tests a timber pergola has to survive every single year. Knotwood’s timber-look powder-coat finishes give the warmth of a timber aesthetic with the durability of an engineered aluminium system underneath it.
Solid powder coated colours and sublimated timber grain finishes, applied at the factory rather than painted on site. See our finishes page for the current range.
The UK range centres on Geo Structure, an engineered, modular shading system built from post covers, geometric beams and roof battens, with concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes. It suits both residential gardens and commercial outdoor areas, and is configured to the site rather than sold as a fixed kit.
Knotwood is manufactured in Australia by a family-owned business with a track record across residential and commercial projects, and supplied to the UK market. Contact our team for current UK stock availability and lead times.
Not fully, and it’s worth being straight about that. Geo Structure has a battened roof, so it filters sun and gives shelter from light rain, but it isn’t a sealed roof and water will pass between the battens in a downpour. Closer batten spacing gives more cover and less light. If the brief is a genuinely dry space you can sit under in any weather, that’s a solid or louvred roof rather than a battened one, and worth discussing before the design is set.
The footings carry the wind load, so they’re sized against the structure rather than picked from a standard detail. Height, span and how exposed the site is all change the answer, and a structure in an open garden needs more than the same footprint tucked against a house. Where an aluminium pergola is going onto an existing slab or deck, what’s underneath it matters as much as the pergola itself. Send us the dimensions and the location and we will confirm what the footings need to be.
Size is set by the beam span, the post spacing and the loading rather than by a fixed maximum. Larger spans need deeper beams or additional posts, and the wind loading at the site drives that as much as the area being covered. Engineering specifications are prepared for the specific structure, so send us the area you want to cover and we will work out how it needs to be framed.
Usually not if it’s a detached garden structure, but that changes if it’s attached to the house, if it’s large, or if it affects means of escape or drainage. Planning permission is a separate question again, covered in government planning guidance. Where a structure attaches to a building, the fixing back into the wall becomes a building matter rather than a garden one. Tell us what it’s attaching to and we will flag whether you need to involve building control.
Yes, and all three are better planned before manufacture than retrofitted. Lighting is commonly run within the beams, patio heaters are frequently mounted to them, and screens or battens can close in one or more sides for privacy and wind protection using the same profiles and finish. Cable routes and fixing points are straightforward to allow for at design stage and awkward to add later. Tell us what the space needs to do and we will work the provision in.
An aluminium pergola is normally installed by a builder or landscaper rather than by us, and the footings are usually part of the wider landscaping works. Profiles are manufactured to order rather than held in every finish, so lead time depends on the configuration, the finish and the quantity. Garden projects are seasonal and everyone wants the same delivery window, so if the work is tied to a date, talk to us early rather than in spring.
