Architectural aluminium louvre systems solve a problem that a flat surface can’t: how to control light, airflow and privacy all at once, and adjust the balance as the day or season changes. Knotwood’s facade louvre systems bring that flexibility across facades, screens and partitions, in a range built for the realities of the UK’s damp, variable climate. These are specification-grade architectural systems for buildings and outdoor structures, not HVAC or ventilation grilles.
Aluminium louvres are blade-shaped extruded profiles installed in a parallel arrangement to control the passage of light, air and sightlines through a facade or screen. The blade angle determines how much comes through and how much visual privacy the system provides: fixed louvres are set at a designed angle for permanent shading or privacy, while operable louvres adjust to respond to changing conditions throughout the day.
Both systems share the same aluminium construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes, whichever application they’re going into, whether that’s facade shading, a partition system or outdoor screening, they combine genuine design flexibility with the durability an engineered aluminium system delivers. It’s just as suited to Screening and Partitions applications that need to match the same look.

Fixed Louvres are modular aluminium panels with the blade angle set permanently. Two blade types, no moving parts, and an infill strip that conceals every fixing.
Operable Louvres are 88mm aluminium blades linked by a control bar. Tilt the bar and every blade moves together, adjusting light, airflow and privacy across the whole panel.
Aluminium louvres are blade-shaped extruded aluminium profiles installed in a parallel arrangement to control the passage of light, air and sightlines through a facade or screen. The angle of the blade determines how much light and airflow passes through and how much visual privacy the system provides. They are used for facade shading, balcony screens, pergolas and architectural partitions.
Fixed aluminium louvres are set at a designed angle to deliver permanent solar shading or privacy. The angle is worked out from the orientation and the sun path, so the blades block high summer sun while still letting lower winter light through, and once installed nothing changes. Operable aluminium louvres can be adjusted through the day to respond to changing light, airflow and privacy requirements, either by hand or by motor. Fixed systems suit an elevation with a predictable shading problem and no need for user control. Operable systems suit spaces people occupy and adjust, like a terrace or a balcony. Both share the same aluminium construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finish range.
Aluminium louvres are commonly specified for facade shading on south and west-facing elevations, privacy screens on balconies and courtyards, architectural partitions that control light and sightlines, and pergola or outdoor living structures that benefit from adjustable shade. Both fixed and operable systems suit residential and commercial projects.
In architecture, a louvre is a series of angled blades or slats fitted into a frame to allow air and light to pass through while controlling visibility and solar exposure. The principle is old, going back to timber shutters and ventilated roof lanterns, but the modern application is a facade element rather than a window fitting. What makes a louvre useful architecturally is that it does several things at once: it shades, it screens, it ventilates, and it gives an elevation depth and rhythm that a flat panel cannot. That is why louvres are often used on the west elevation of a building, where late afternoon sun is hardest to control and the facade is most visible.
Knotwood aluminium louvres are manufactured in Australia by a family-owned business with a track record across residential and commercial projects, and supplied to the UK market. Because the engineering and finish documentation comes from the same place as the product, blade spacing, span and fixing detail can be confirmed against your specific project rather than worked out from a generic datasheet. Contact our team for current UK stock availability and lead times.
Yes. Aluminium louvre screens are a common choice for balcony and courtyard privacy applications. The blade angle determines how much of the sightline is blocked from outside while still allowing air and filtered light through. Both fixed and operable systems are suited to balcony screening on residential and commercial projects. Where the screen also forms part of the guarding, the requirements for balustrades apply in addition to the screening function.
Aluminium louvres shade a facade or opening by intercepting direct sunlight at the blade angle, before it reaches the glass. On south and west-facing elevations, where solar gain is greatest in the UK, fixed louvres can be set to block high summer sun while still admitting lower winter light, and operable louvres allow the angle to be adjusted through the day. External shading is one of the measures recognised in the Approved Documents covering energy efficiency and overheating in UK buildings, because intercepting sun outside the glass is far more effective than dealing with the heat once it is inside.
Aluminium louvres with powder coated finishes are low maintenance. Regular cleaning with a pH-neutral detergent and a soft cloth or brush is generally sufficient to remove dust and grime. No sanding, sealing or repainting is required. For coastal installations, wash more frequently to remove salt deposits, and check the warranty page for the maintenance schedule that applies to your finish.
Knotwood aluminium louvre systems are finished with architectural-grade powder coatings. Both fixed and operable systems share the same finish range, giving consistent results across a project regardless of which system is used. The full range, including timber grain finishes, is on our finishes page.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium louvre systems are specified for both external applications, such as facade shading and balcony screens, and internal architectural partitions where the goal is to control light and sightlines without fully closing a space off. Internally the driver is usually zoning rather than solar control, so blade spacing is set for the sightline you want rather than for a sun angle, and operable systems let a space change through the day. The same modular construction and concealed fixing method applies in both contexts, which means a louvre used on a facade can carry through to an interior on the same project with a consistent finish.
Knotwood offers two aluminium louvre systems in the UK: Fixed Louvres, which deliver permanent privacy and solar shading for facades, screens and partitions, and Operable Louvres, which can be adjusted to control light, airflow and privacy as conditions change. Both systems share the same concealed fixings, modular construction and architectural-grade finish range.
Louvre blades span between supporting frames or posts, and the achievable span depends on the blade profile, its depth and the wind exposure of the site. A deeper blade spans further, which is why an exposed facade often uses a heavier profile than a sheltered courtyard screen for the same visual effect. Frames fix to the building structure, to posts, or to a substructure depending on the application, and fixings are concealed so nothing is visible on the finished face. Because span, spacing and wind load interact, the setout is worked through per project rather than taken from a standard table. Send us your elevation and location and we will confirm what is achievable.
The blades themselves need the same routine as the rest of the range: washing with water and a pH-neutral detergent, more often in coastal locations to clear salt deposits. The difference with an operable system is the moving parts. The linkage, pivots and, on a motorised system, the drive are worth checking annually to confirm the blades are still moving through their full range evenly. Clearing leaves and debris from between the blades matters more on an operable system than a fixed one, because debris caught in the linkage is what causes uneven movement. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners, since those can mark the powder coat.
