Interlocking Planks lock into each other rather than sitting side by side over a visible screw line. A starter profile sets the first edge, each plank slides into the previous one, and a concealed Plank Clip fixes it to the joist below. The result is a continuous deck surface with no fastener heads to catch a bare foot, corrode at the head, or interrupt the run.
This system suits alfresco and entertaining areas where a continuous surface matters, renovation projects replacing a tired timber deck, and balcony and roof terrace work where the deck sits over an occupied space. Aluminium does not absorb moisture, so it also suits pool surrounds and anywhere the deck stays wet longer than it stays dry.
Interlocking Planks are 6061-T6 extruded aluminium, fixed with 304 or 316 grade stainless steel fasteners, or hot-dip galvanised outside marine zones. The planks will not cup, swell, split or rot as the seasons turn, the finish needs no oiling or resealing, and the system carries a 15 year limited warranty against a 30 year design life.
A single 150mm plank width, supported at 450mm centres or continuous. The system includes a starter profile, concealed plank clips, a hidden finisher trim for exposed edges, cladding trims where the deck meets a wall, and a 20mm infill that closes the last of the fixings.
A Cladding Trim (F) fixes first against any face that will not be exposed, such as a wall. The Starter then fixes to each joist along the starting edge with a Plank Clip. The first plank slides its edge into the Starter so the side is held down, and once it is straight and aligned, a Plank Clip fixes it to the joist. Every plank after that slides into the previous one and repeats.
Interlocking Planks carry a sublimated timber grain surface with a textured profile underfoot, applied over a powder coat base. It is the only finish in the Knotwood range with a slip-resistant coating rather than a standard powder coat surface.
Designed to integrate seamlessly with decking stairways and landings, providing consistent lines and safe, stylish edge protection.
Use varied board widths to add character to your design.
Enjoy a flawless finish with hidden fixings that enhance the clean lines and premium look of your installation.
Interlocking decking planks lock into each other along their edges rather than sitting side by side over a visible screw line. Each plank slides into the one before it and is fixed to the joist with a concealed clip, so the finished deck surface carries no fastener heads at all.
On a screwed deck, every board is fixed through its face, so the surface shows two screw heads per joist for the length of the deck. Those heads are what catch underfoot, what stain around, and where a timber board starts to split. An interlocking system puts the fixing under the plank, in the joint, so the walking surface stays uninterrupted and there is nowhere on it for water to sit against a fastener.
The support structure needs to give the clips something solid to fix into: top hat section, metal hollow sections or timber sections all work. Planks are supported at 450mm centres or continuous.
A cladding trim fixes first against any face that will not be exposed, such as a wall. The starter profile then fixes to each joist along the starting edge. The first plank slides into the starter so its side is held down, and once it is straight and aligned it is fixed with a plank clip. Each plank after that slides into the previous one and is clipped down the same way, working across the deck. The perimeter closes with trims, a hidden finisher trim goes on any edge exposed to a pool or garden, and a 20mm infill clips in last to conceal the remaining fixings.
Yes. Aluminium does not absorb moisture, so the planks will not swell, warp or rot the way a timber deck does at a pool surround. A hidden finisher trim closes any edge exposed to the pool, and 316 grade stainless fasteners suit a chlorinated or salt environment.
No. Aluminium does not move with moisture the way timber does, so there is no cupping, splitting or nail-popping over time. The finish is applied to the metal rather than to the surface, so there is no oiling, staining or resealing in the maintenance cycle. The system carries a 30 year design life.
Periodic washing with a soft brush and water, using a pH neutral detergent. Nothing else.
The planks sit on a supported substructure at 450mm centres or continuous, which suits balcony and roof terrace build-ups, and the aluminium construction means no moisture movement over an occupied space below. Balconies carry their own requirements on the materials used, which depend on the building’s height and use, so send us the building details and we will confirm what we can supply and provide the classification documentation.
Both avoid the sanding and resealing cycle timber needs. The differences are material. Aluminium is extruded rather than moulded, so the plank holds a sharper edge and a more consistent line across a long run, and it does not soften or sag in sustained heat the way a polymer-and-wood-flour board can. It is also recyclable at end of life, where a composite board combining polymer and wood flour is harder to reprocess.
Interlocking Planks are extruded aluminium, classified A2-s1,d0 to BS EN 13501-1. Under Approved Document B, A2-s1,d0 is a material of limited combustibility. That matters most on balconies and roof terraces, where the materials used in the build-up are governed by the building’s height and use rather than by the decking alone. Contact our team with the building details and we will provide the classification report reference for your specification.
Yes, though the method depends on where it sits. Because interlocking planks lock into each other, the run is unpicked back from the nearest free edge to reach the damaged board, then relaid the same way. A plank near the perimeter is quick, one in the middle of a large deck means lifting more of the run. Keep a few spares from the original order, since finishes can vary slightly between production batches.
Water passes between the planks and needs somewhere to go, so the sub-base has to fall away from the building rather than towards it. Interlocking planks don’t absorb any of it, so nothing swells or rots, but the substructure below still needs to drain and dry. On a balcony or terrace that interacts with the waterproofing below, which is designed for the building rather than supplied with the deck.
Interlocking planks are manufactured to order rather than held in every finish, so lead time depends on the finish and the quantity. Standard powder coated colours and wood grain finishes run faster than a bespoke colour. Decking usually sits at the end of a landscaping or fit-out programme, so if the date is fixed, talk to us early and we’ll confirm what’s achievable.
