V line aluminium cladding takes the same interlocking board Knotwood builds every cladding profile from and cuts a sharp V-groove down the centre of each one. Rather than a flat run of colour, the facade picks up a real line of shadow and highlight, one that shifts as the light does. That's worth more here than it sounds: UK daylight sits at a low angle for a lot of the year, especially through autumn and winter, and a groove profile catches that raking light in a way a flat board simply can't, throwing shadow lines a flush finish never gets the chance to show. Two board widths cover most briefs, a tight feature strip on an entrance or a full elevation where the whole facade carries the detail.
V Line earns its place doing one of two jobs. On a new-build estate where every plot shares the same shell, a V Line section on the entrance or a street-facing bay gives a house its own identity without changing the build at all, just the finish. On a terrace extension or infill project, it works the opposite way: a long flat run of Shadow Line or Weatherboards can read as one uninterrupted surface, and a V Line band breaks that up, giving the eye somewhere to land partway along the wall rather than reading it as one continuous panel.
V Line Boards are built from the same aluminium, with the same concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes, as every other Knotwood cladding profile. They won't rust and hold up without the groove itself becoming a problem, a deeper channel profile like this has somewhere for road grime and general city pollution to actually collect, which a flat board doesn't deal with in the same way. The finish washes off rather than staining in, so the V-groove that gives the board its depth doesn't end up being the reason it looks tired first.
Two widths: 100mm for a tighter, more frequent groove line, and 150mm where the brief wants a bolder, slower rhythm across the wall. Both use the same interlocking fixing system as the rest of the range, and a ventilated option exists for builds where air needs to move behind the facade rather than sit sealed against it.
V Line Boards install vertically using the same interlocking system as a horizontal run, each board clicking into the one beside it and fixed with concealed screws into the substructure. Installation follows a left-to-right sequence, working the same finishing trims, corners and starter used on a horizontal wall.
Each V Line board interlocks into the one below it, starting from a base trim at the bottom of the run and working up the wall. Fixings sit behind the board face, so the finished wall shows a clean, uninterrupted surface with no visible screws.
An interlocking starter trim sets the angle for the first board and locks every board after it into place, giving the whole run a secure, consistent base to build from, whether the boards run horizontally or vertically.
Base and cover trims finish the exposed top and bottom edges of a V Line run, concealing fixings and giving the installation a clean edge wherever a wall plane starts or stops.
Internal, external and 135-degree angle corner trims let a V Line run continue cleanly around a building's corners without cutting into the board profile, keeping the same interlocking system and V-groove unbroken across every face.
Our interlocking boards can be spaced apart for a shadowline look.
Combine different board sizes to craft a distinctive look.
Mix and match different timber colours to create realistic and dynamic timber looks.
Our 100mm boards can flex around curved surfaces, opening up creative possibilities for unique and organic designs.
V line aluminium cladding is Knotwood’s grooved board profile, a sharp channel cut down the centre of an otherwise flat aluminium board, rather than a flush surface or the shadow-gap reveal you’d get between separate boards on Shadow Line. The groove itself is what gives the facade its depth, not the joint between boards, so the effect reads consistently even across a single continuous panel.
The difference is where the depth comes from. Shadow Line gets its rhythm from a reveal between boards. Castellated gets its from a board that physically sits proud of the wall. V Line gets it from a groove cut into a flat board, so the surface itself stays even while the light does the work of creating contrast, a subtler mechanism than a projecting profile, but a more pronounced line than a flush board gives you.
Two scenarios in particular: as a feature strip on an otherwise flat facade, entrances and street-facing bays are the obvious candidates, and as the primary finish where a specifier wants a groove pattern to read at close range, a boundary wall or a low-rise commercial frontage people actually walk past rather than drive past.
Yes, and it’s a common approach rather than an edge case. Because every Knotwood profile shares the same fixing system and finish range, a V Line section and a Shadow Line run can sit on the same facade using identical fixings underneath, so there’s no compatibility problem to solve on site, just a design decision about where the groove line goes.
V Line uses the same architectural-grade finish range as the rest of Knotwood’s cladding: traditional solid powder coated colours, or a sublimated timber grain surface. Contact Knotwood for the current colour range and finish codes for UK supply.
Two widths, 100mm and 150mm. The 100mm board gives a tighter, more frequent groove line, the 150mm a bolder, slower rhythm across the wall, and the 100mm board will also flex around a curved surface.
Less than you’d expect, and less than timber by a wide margin either way. The groove doesn’t trap water the way a timber equivalent would, aluminium doesn’t swell or rot, so there’s nothing for standing moisture to actually damage. What it does collect over time is airborne grime, road dust in an urban setting, general pollution, which shows up more in a channel than on a flat surface simply because there’s somewhere for it to sit. A wash down clears it, the same as any powder-coated finish, it’s just a slightly more frequent job than a flat board would need in the same location.
V Line is classified A2-s1,d0 to BS EN 13501-1. Under Approved Document B, A2-s1,d0 is a material of limited combustibility, which is the classification required for external wall construction on relevant buildings under Regulation 7(2). The classification applies to the board as tested, finish included. Because compliance is assessed on the whole external wall build-up rather than the cladding alone, send us the building height and the wall construction and we will provide the classification report reference for your specification.
