Shadow line cladding gives a facade a defined horizontal reveal along every board, so the elevation reads with quiet depth and rhythm rather than as a flat surface. Shadow Line is adjustable: the same board delivers either that reveal or a clean flat finish line, set by how it is fitted. Available in four widths, from a narrow feature strip to a full elevation.
Horizontal cladding suits contemporary residential and commercial facades where clean lines are already part of the design language. Shadow Line also holds up well on renovations, because the profile reads as considered rather than aggressively modern, so it updates a building without breaking its connection to what it was. It sits comfortably next to brick, render and glazing.
Shadow Line is 6063 T6 extruded aluminium with concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes. It won't rust, rot or warp through the UK weather cycle, and there's no repainting schedule to keep up. A ventilated option is available where a drained and ventilated rainscreen build-up is specified behind the boards.
Four widths: 100mm, 150mm, 200mm and 300mm, so one profile covers a feature strip or a full elevation. Boards use an interlocking fixing system with concealed screws, and a ventilated option is available.
Shadow Line boards install vertically using the same interlocking system as a horizontal run, each board clicking into the one beside it and fixed with concealed screws into the substructure. Installation follows a left-to-right sequence, using the same finishing trims, corners and starter as a horizontal wall.
Each Shadow Line board interlocks into the one below it, starting from a base trim at the bottom of the run and working up the wall. Fixings sit behind the board face, so the finished wall shows a clean, uninterrupted surface with no visible screws.
An interlocking starter trim sets the angle for the first board and locks every board after it into place, giving the whole run a secure, consistent base to build from, whether the boards run horizontally or vertically.
Base and cover trims finish the exposed top and bottom edges of a run, concealing fixings and giving the installation a clean edge wherever a wall plane starts or stops.
Internal, external and 135-degree angle corner trims let a Shadow Line run continue cleanly around a building's corners without cutting into the board profile, keeping the interlocking system and the shadow line reveal unbroken across every face.
Our boards can be spaced apart to open up the reveal and deepen the shadow line.
Combine different board sizes to craft a distinctive look.
Mix and match different timber colours to create realistic and dynamic timber looks.
Our 100mm boards can flex around curved surfaces, opening up creative possibilities for unique and organic designs.
Shadow line cladding is an aluminium cladding profile where each board sits with a defined recessed reveal along its length, creating a continuous horizontal shadow line across the facade. The effect gives a building quiet depth and rhythm without a heavy textured look. Knotwood’s Shadow Line delivers this in a low-maintenance aluminium system with architectural-grade timber-look finishes, suited to UK residential and commercial facades.
Shadow Line sits in the middle of Knotwood’s range for visual weight. It has more depth and definition than a flush board, and more restraint than V Line or Castellated. The horizontal reveal is subtle: contemporary, without the bold texture or open joint gap that more expressive profiles create. It is the choice when the brief calls for a clean, considered finish rather than a statement.
Shadow Line suits contemporary residential and commercial facades where clean horizontal lines are part of the design language. It works as the primary finish on a new build or as a considered match to an existing facade on a renovation. Because the reveal is subtle rather than bold, it sits comfortably alongside brick, render and glazing without imposing a heavy architectural statement.
Yes. The horizontal profile is contemporary without being so overtly modern that it clashes with an older building’s structure. The reveal gives a facade an updated look without breaking its connection to what it was. Because the system is aluminium, the new cladding will not behave differently to the existing structure as both respond to weather and temperature over time.
Knotwood Shadow Line is classified A2-s1,d0 to BS EN 13501-1. Under Approved Document B, A2-s1,d0 is a material of limited combustibility, which is the classification required for external wall construction on relevant buildings under Regulation 7(2). The classification applies to the board as tested, finish included. Contact our team for the classification report reference for your specification.
Shadow Line is available with a ventilated option, which suits a drained and ventilated rainscreen cladding build-up behind the boards. Cavity depth, breather membrane and fixing centres are project-specific and should be confirmed against Knotwood’s technical documentation and the substrate you are fixing to.
Shadow Line comes in four board widths: 100mm, 150mm, 200mm and 300mm. The same profile covers a narrow feature strip or a full elevation, and the four widths can be mixed across a single facade to break up a large run.
Shadow Line uses an interlocking fixing system with concealed screws into the substructure. Boards can run horizontally, interlocking upward from a base trim, or vertically in a left-to-right sequence using the same starter, trims and corners. No fixings are visible on the finished face. Full installation detail is in the Quick Start Guide and Detail Drawings Library, both available from the Resources section.
