Castellated is Knotwood's boldest profiled cladding board, a ridged three-dimensional profile fixed with a secure tab-lock system for a seamless finish. Each board carries a repeating pattern of ridges that throws strong shadow lines across the wall, giving a facade real texture and architectural presence rather than a flat, uniform surface.
Castellated cladding suits facades meant to function as an architectural feature rather than a backdrop: commercial frontages where street presence matters, education and healthcare buildings, apartment schemes and hospitality fit-outs. Profiled cladding earns its place on large elevations in particular, where the repeating shadow pattern gives scale and rhythm to an area that would otherwise read as one flat plane.
Castellated cladding shares the same aluminium construction, concealed fixings, multiple installation methods and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of Knotwood's cladding range. The bolder look comes with the same low maintenance as a flat board: it won't rust, rot or warp, and there's no repainting cycle and no annual sealing to keep up.
Castellated cladding comes in a single 150mm board width, forming a one-piece profiled cladding board with no visible fasteners. Boards install with a tab-lock fixing system and run either horizontally or vertically.
Each Castellated board hooks onto a tab-lock starter at the base and swings flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed cladding clip. Installation works from the bottom up, one board locking into the next, finishing with a cover trim pressed over the base trim to close the perimeter.
Castellated boards install vertically using the same tab-lock system as a horizontal run, each board hooking onto the starter and swinging flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed cladding clip. Installation follows a left-to-right sequence, using the same starter, trims and corners as a horizontal wall.
A tab-lock starter trim is fixed to the base trim around the perimeter of the cladding area, giving the first Castellated board a secure hook point to swing onto and setting up every board that follows in the same system.
Base and cover trims run the perimeter of a Castellated run, concealing fixings around wall edges, windows and doors, and pressing together for a clean finished line wherever the cladding starts or stops.
Reversible corner trims let a Castellated run continue cleanly around both internal and external corners. Boards install up to the corner, then a corner cover trim presses into the corner base trim to finish the join.
Our boards can be spaced apart to open up the reveal and deepen the shadow line.
Combine different board sizes to craft a distinctive look.
Mix and match different timber colours to create realistic and dynamic timber looks.
Castellated is a profiled cladding board in extruded aluminium, shaped so the face steps in and out rather than sitting flat. Profiled cladding is the trade term for any board with a three-dimensional face, and castellated is the squared, notched version of it. Knotwood’s is a 150mm tab-lock board available in solid colours or a timber grain finish.
Shadow Line, V Line and Weatherboards all sit close to flat, with the detail in the joint between boards. Castellated puts the detail in the board itself, so the texture is much stronger and reads from further away.
On elevations meant to be noticed. It carries large commercial facades and apartment schemes well because the shadow pattern gives scale to a big flat area. It also works as a feature section against a flatter profile like Shadow Line elsewhere on the same building, using identical fixings underneath.
No. Corrugated cladding is a wavy, ridged sheet, usually rolled from thin metal and associated with agricultural and industrial buildings. Castellated is a notched, squared profiled cladding board with defined flat faces between each ridge, extruded rather than rolled, which is what gives it a harder shadow line and a more architectural read. The two get confused because both add texture to a wall, but they are different products at different ends of the market.
Boards hook into a tab-lock starter and swing back onto the sub-structure, then a concealed cladding clip fixes each board into the sub-frame. Every board locks into the one before it, so no fixings show on the finished face. Boards run horizontally or vertically using the same components.
No. The finish is baked onto the aluminium rather than applied on site, so there is no repainting cycle and no annual sealing.
The look is achievable in all three. The difference is what happens over time. Timber battens and composite boards move, cup and need refinishing, and the sharp edges that create the shadow line are the first thing to weather. An extruded aluminium profile holds the same edge, and the same shadow, for the life of the finish.
Castellated boards are extruded aluminium, classified A2-s1,d0 to BS EN 13501-1. Under Approved Document B, A2-s1,d0 is a material of limited combustibility, which is the classification required for external wall construction on relevant buildings under Regulation 7(2). Because compliance is assessed on the whole external wall build-up rather than the cladding alone, send us the building height and the wall construction and we will provide the classification report reference for your specification.
Yes, and it changes the effect more than it does on a flat board. Run horizontally, the ridges throw shadow that shifts through the day as the sun moves across the elevation. Run vertically, the shadow stays more constant and the wall reads taller. The substructure changes with the orientation since battens run perpendicular to the boards, so the direction needs deciding before the framing goes up.
The ridge depth is what separates castellated cladding from a flat board, and it’s what creates the shadow. On a south-facing elevation in strong sun the pattern reads hard and graphic; on a north-facing wall in flat UK light it’s subtler and reads more as texture than as line. Worth thinking about which elevation it’s going on, because the same board looks like two different products depending on the light it gets.
Yes, and it’s how the profile is most often used. Castellated cladding on a feature elevation or an entrance, with Shadow Line or V Line running across the rest, gives a building a hierarchy without introducing a second material. All Knotwood cladding profiles share the same finish range, so the boards match exactly even where the profiles don’t.
More considered than on a flat board, because a ridged profile meeting a corner or a window reveal has to resolve the pattern as well as close the edge. Trims are matched to the profile and finish, and the setout matters: where the ridges land relative to an opening is the difference between a facade that looks designed and one that looks cut to fit. Send us the elevations and we’ll work it through before manufacture.
