Overview

Flip Battens use a single universal profile that flips onto itself. Cut two identical lengths, flip one to mirror the other, and press them together until they click, forming a solid rectangular batten with every fixing sealed inside. One profile does both halves, so there is no bracket hardware to order, match or lose on site. Available across nine sizes, from a slim 38 x 16mm through to a bold 200 x 25mm.

What are flip battens?

Flip battens are Knotwood’s self-mating aluminium batten system, sometimes called a self-mating slat. A single universal profile flips onto itself: one half fixes to the substructure, the second flips and clips over it to form a complete hollow rectangular batten with every fixing concealed inside. It is a decorative system, suited to feature walls, garage doors, screens, columns and curved wall applications.

How does the flip batten system work?

Each flip batten uses two identical profile halves. The first half fixes to the substructure, then the second half flips and clicks onto it to form a complete hollow rectangular batten, fully concealing all fixings between the two mated halves. There is no separate bracket, because the profile is its own fixing system.

Are flip battens suitable for structural use?

No. Flip battens are designed as a decorative profile or assembly and are not engineered for structural purposes.

Are flip battens suitable for columns and curved walls?

Yes, and this is where they do something the rest of the range cannot. The two halves close around the substructure rather than needing a flat surface to fix against, so a flip batten will follow a column or a curved wall where a standard flat batten system has nothing to sit on.

Can flip battens be retrofitted to existing structures?

Yes. Flip battens are designed for retrofit as well as new build, and install over existing structures using top hat section, metal hollow sections or timber substructures.

Are flip battens suitable for coastal environments?

Yes. Flip battens are manufactured from 6060 T5 extruded aluminium, which does not rust, and the powder coated finish provides the barrier against salt air. In coastal locations use 304 or 316 grade stainless steel fasteners, with an insulating barrier or rubber washer to prevent galvanic contact between dissimilar metals, and rinse periodically with fresh water to clear salt before it builds up on the finish. Confirm the fixing specification with your installer for the exposure at your site.

What sizes do flip battens come in?

Nine sizes, from a slim 38 x 16mm through to a bold 200 x 25mm. Each length is cut on site and self-mated with an identical second length, so a single profile order covers both halves of the finished batten.

How do flip battens compare to timber battens over the long term?

Knotwood flip battens will not rot, warp, crack, or need sanding, oiling or recoating at any point. A timber batten in the same exposure typically needs retreatment or replacement inside fifteen years, and the exposed ends and fixing points are where it goes first. The sublimated timber grain finish carries a 15 year limited warranty.

How do flip battens compare with clip battens and panel battens?

All three share the same architectural-grade finishes. Flip battens are the only system that self-mates from a single universal profile, which is what makes them work on columns, curved walls and a simple two-piece install. Clip battens use a concealed bracket-and-clip fixing for a seamless single-finish look. Panel battens are engineered for large-span consistency on wide commercial facades and ceilings.

How do I maintain flip battens?

Periodic washing with a soft brush and water, using a pH neutral detergent. No painting, sealing or specialist treatments.

What is the reaction to fire classification of flip battens?

Flip battens are 6060 T5 extruded aluminium, classified A2-s1,d0 to BS EN 13501-1. Under Approved Document B, A2-s1,d0 is a material of limited combustibility, which is the classification required for external wall construction on relevant buildings under Regulation 7(2). Because compliance is assessed on the whole external wall build-up rather than the battens alone, send us the building height and the wall construction and we will provide the classification report reference for your specification.
