Battens are one of the most versatile systems in the Knotwood range, equally at home creating a feature wall indoors, defining a facade outdoors, or forming the basis of an architectural screen. Each profile brings a layered, dimensional look, with shadow lines and rhythm that flat cladding simply can’t replicate, in a material built for UK conditions: non-combustible, corrosion resistant, colour stable and low maintenance, holding its finish through years of sun, rain and daily use.
Timber-look aluminium battens are extruded profiles powder-coated with a wood grain finish, giving a facade, ceiling or feature wall the character of timber without the upkeep it demands. They suit both exterior applications, facades and architectural screens, where timber would need regular treatment, and interior ones, feature walls and ceilings, where the aesthetic is the goal and an aluminium system’s practical demands are the easier trade.
What changes from profile to profile is the fixing method, and that’s where the real versatility comes in: different jobs call for different ways of getting a batten run up cleanly, whether that’s a residential feature wall or a large-scale commercial facade. It’s just as suited to soffits, screening and garage doors that need to match the same look.
Select an application to explore available solutions.
Clip battens use a concealed bracket-and-clip fixing, so a run finishes with no visible fasteners anywhere on the face. Over 20 shapes and sizes.
Flip battens are a self-mating profile: two identical lengths clip together into a box batten with every fixing sealed inside. Nine sizes, and the only system in the range that wraps a column.
Panel battens are a fully-backed system: a solid panel with factory-set brackets fixes first, then battens click on. Spacing is decided before it reaches site.
Track battens fix a continuous track first, so the spacing is set before any batten goes up. Straight or angled, and the only system that mounts to a suspended ceiling grid.
Knotwood UK offers four batten systems: Clip Battens, Flip Battens, Panel Battens and Track Battens. Clip Battens come in 25mm and 50mm suites with slimline and wide profile options, using a two-part concealed fixing. Flip Battens are universal profiles that connect to form hollow box sections, ranging from 38x16mm to 200x25mm. Panel Battens are engineered for larger-span facade and ceiling work, and Track Battens use a track-and-clip fixing for faster, more consistent installation. All four use concealed fixings for a seamless finish.
Clip Battens use a two-part system. Fix the male bracket to the substrate, then clip the batten profile onto the bracket until it clicks into place. All fixings are concealed. Batten spacers (25mm or 50mm) allow spacing between profiles to be adjusted for custom designs.
Flip Battens are universal profiles that flip and connect onto themselves to form a rectangular hollow box section. Secure one half to the substrate, position the second half with outer upstands facing each other, angle one side into place, and press firmly until the flip profiles click together. End caps are available for exposed ends.
Minimal. Wipe down with a sponge or soft-bristle brush using mild detergent (pH 6-7, such as car detergent), then rinse with water before it dries to avoid streaking. Avoid stiff brushes or abrasive cleaners that could scratch the finish.
Feature walls and ceilings in residential and commercial interiors, facade screens and architectural screening elements, soffit and eave linings, and garage door facades. The same profile works indoors and outdoors, which is what makes battens one of the most versatile systems in the range, a single fixing system specified once can carry across several different applications on the same build.
Clip Battens use a concealed bracket clip to fix each profile separately to the substrate, offering more flexibility in spacing since each batten is positioned independently. Flip Battens are two-part profiles that flip and connect to form a solid hollow box section, better suited to applications where a two-tone finish option matters more than adjustable spacing.
Yes. Aluminium doesn’t rust, warp or rot, and it’s non-combustible, which suits exterior use in the UK’s wet and variable climate. There’s no repainting cycle to keep up, unlike a timber batten screen. For exposed coastal locations, follow best practice on drainage detailing and rinse periodically with fresh water to clear salt deposits before they build up on the finish.
Aluminium is non-combustible as a material. External wall systems are governed by the Building Regulations, principally Approved Document B for fire safety, with additional requirements applying to buildings above 11 metres and stricter ones above 18 metres. Reaction to fire performance for a finished product is classified under BS EN 13501-1, and compliance is assessed on the whole wall build-up rather than on the battens alone. Send us the building height, the use class and the wall construction and our technical team will confirm what we can supply and provide the supporting documentation.
Yes. The same profiles used on exterior facades translate directly to interior applications, giving a project a consistent timber-look finish across internal and external surfaces, with the concealed fixing system producing a clean result on either.
Flip Battens range from 38x16mm to 200x25mm. Clip Battens come in 25mm and 50mm suites, with slimline and wide profile options. Standard lengths are 5.65m. Panel Battens and Track Battens are sized to suit the span and the application, so contact our team with the project details and we will confirm what is available for the profile you are specifying.
Knotwood battens are supplied with an architectural-grade powder-coated finish designed for long-term durability without repainting. Refinishing is possible in some circumstances but isn’t a routine maintenance procedure, surface preparation and specialist primer are required, and Knotwood recommends consulting a specialist applicator if refinishing is needed.
