A UK garden or balcony rarely gets privacy and airflow at the same time. Close a boundary off with a solid fence and you lose the light and ventilation that made the space liveable in the first place. Knotwood’s aluminium privacy screens and louvre systems solve both at once, in a timber-look finish that doesn’t ask for the upkeep real timber would.
Timber screening in a UK garden greys and grows algae in shaded, damp corners faster than it does anywhere sunnier, and it splits at the fixing points long before the panel itself wears out. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles hold the same slatted, timber grain look without that decline: they don’t rot in a wet corner of the garden, and the finish doesn’t need refreshing once the first British winter has been through it.
Timber screening in a UK garden greys and grows algae in shaded, damp corners faster than it does anywhere sunnier, and it splits at the fixing points long before the panel itself wears out. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles hold the same slatted, wood grain look without that decline: they don’t rot in a wet corner of the garden, and the finish doesn’t need refreshing once the first British winter has been through it.
Knotwood Screens create a fixed decorative or privacy element. They suit boundaries, balustrade infill, balcony surrounds and feature walls, giving a garden or facade rhythm and texture while controlling views in and out.
Knotwood Louvres add adjustability. Fixed louvre systems shape light and airflow by design, operable systems let you dial in more privacy, airflow or light as the moment calls for it.
An aluminium privacy screen is a modular panel or slat system that creates a visual barrier while still allowing airflow and filtered light through. Knotwood’s screens are used for garden and courtyard boundaries, balcony privacy, pool area fencing, and as decorative screens on commercial developments, with finishes and slat orientation adjusted to suit how much privacy the space needs.
Yes, this is the core advantage over a solid fence panel or wall. Closer slat spacing and steeper angles reduce visibility further, wider spacing keeps more light and airflow moving through. It’s the same mechanism aluminium louvres use, just fixed rather than adjustable, which is why the two systems are often specified together on one boundary.
Timber screening in a UK garden is prone to splitting at the fixings and greying or growing algae in shaded, damp spots well before the panel has structurally failed. Aluminium privacy screens do not carry that decline curve: the finish does not need re-oiling or replacing, and a shaded boundary that would blacken a timber panel within a couple of seasons does not affect an aluminium one. There is no annual treatment cycle to budget for.
Aluminium privacy screens are available in solid powder coated colours and in sublimated timber grain finishes, applied at the factory rather than painted on site. See our finishes page for the current range.
Yes. Aluminium does not rust the way steel does, and the powder coated finish provides the barrier against salt air, so you avoid the pitting that affects steel screens and the faster weathering that affects timber. In coastal locations the practical requirements are the right fastener specification and a more regular fresh water wash-down to clear salt before it builds up on the finish. That makes aluminium screening a practical choice for UK coastal gardens, terraces and balconies.
Yes, and they solve a slightly different problem than a fixed screen. Fixed louvres control sightlines by angle rather than by slat spacing, so they block a direct line of sight while still moving air through. Operable louvre systems go a step further, letting you open up for light and close down for privacy at different times of day, useful on a south-facing balcony where the privacy need changes with the sun.
Yes. Aluminium privacy screens are widely specified on residential balconies and apartment buildings, used as dividers between adjacent balconies and as side screens managing sightlines from the street or neighbouring properties. Where a screen also forms part of the balustrade, the requirements for guarding height and loading in Approved Document K apply in addition to the screening function. Send us the balcony details and we will confirm whether the screen can be used as guarding or whether it should sit alongside a separate compliant balustrade.
Yes, and this is one of the most common domestic uses in the UK, where a bin store or gas/electric meter box sits on full view from the street or a neighbour’s window. The modular profiles can be fabricated to a custom-sized panel for most enclosures, with concealed fixings and a finish that can match the rest of the property’s exterior.
Aluminium privacy screens use concealed fixings and modular profiles fixed to a structural support frame, typically steel, aluminium or treated timber. The frame and post specification depend on the panel height, the spacing and the exposure of the site, and engineering specifications are available for the specific profile. Contact our team with the layout and we will confirm the fixing detail and the supporting structure required.
Yes. Common UK commercial uses include hospitality courtyard and outdoor dining screening, boundary and facade screening on mixed-use developments, and car park or plant screening where a service area needs to look considered rather than fenced off as an afterthought.
Very little. Aluminium screens do not rot, warp or grey the way timber does, and a wash with mild soap and water is normally enough to keep the finish looking sharp. That is a meaningful difference from timber screening, which typically needs re-oiling or resealing on a multi-year cycle to hold off the greying and algae growth that shaded UK gardens produce.
Knotwood aluminium screen profiles are manufactured in Australia by a family-owned business with a track record across residential and commercial projects, and supplied to the UK market. Contact our team for current UK stock availability and lead times.
In England, boundary screens and fences up to two metres high are usually permitted development, dropping to one metre where the boundary adjoins a highway used by vehicles. That changes if the property is listed, sits in a conservation area, or if a planning condition on a newer development removes permitted development rights, which is common on recent estates. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set their own thresholds. Check with your local planning authority before you settle on a height, because it is far easier to design to the limit than to reduce a screen after it is installed.
It depends on the gap, the slat depth and the angle you are viewed from. A screen viewed straight on always reads more open than the same screen viewed obliquely, which is why a side boundary usually needs less closing up than people expect and a screen facing a first-floor window needs more. Closer spacing raises privacy and cuts airflow and light, wider spacing does the reverse. Rather than guessing, send us a photo from the position you are trying to block and we will work out the spacing that does the job.
Often yes, and it is a common way to lift a tired boundary without rebuilding it. The deciding factor is what is already there: the existing posts, wall or frame need to be sound enough to carry the panel and the wind load on it. Old timber posts and rendered walls in poor condition usually need addressing first. Aluminium privacy screens are light compared with a timber panel, which helps, but the fixing still has to be designed for the substrate. Send us photos and dimensions and we will tell you whether it will carry.
A screen is a solid-ish surface in the wind, so the more you close it up the more load it puts on the posts and the fixings. That is the part people underestimate: the panel rarely fails, the post or the fixing does. Exposed sites, coastal gardens and anything above ground level need the support structure designed for the actual exposure rather than a standard detail. Engineering specifications are available for the specific profile, so give us the location, the height and the spacing and we will confirm what the frame needs to be.
Not significantly, and it is worth being straight about that. Any screen with gaps between the slats lets sound through more or less freely, because noise travels through the same openings that let the air move. A screen will take the edge off perceived noise by removing the visual source, which does make a garden feel calmer, but it is not acoustic screening. If noise is the actual problem rather than overlooking, that needs a solid barrier with mass, and we can talk through where a screen fits alongside one.
Yes, and wet areas suit them better than timber. The profiles do not absorb moisture, so they will not swell, warp or rot in constant splash and humidity, and there is no oiling or sealing cycle to keep up in an area that is awkward to work around. In a chlorinated or salt-water environment, rinse the screen down with fresh water periodically to clear residue off the finish. If the screen also encloses a pool, safety barrier requirements apply and those are set separately from the screening function, so tell us what the enclosure is doing before we specify it.
Yes. Because the system is modular and made to order, a run can be extended along a boundary or a matching panel added elsewhere in the garden later on. The one thing worth knowing is that finishes can vary slightly between production batches, so a panel ordered three years apart may not be a perfect match under direct light. If you know the boundary is being done in stages, tell us at the first order and we can plan the quantities around it.
