Outdoor spaces work hardest when the weather is at its best, and that’s exactly when timber decking and pergolas are under the most strain. Knotwood’s aluminium decking and pergola systems are built for outdoor living in UK conditions: spaces that look considered, feel comfortable to use, and don’t need a maintenance session before every gathering.
Homeowners, builders and landscapers all use Knotwood outdoor living systems across garden entertaining areas, pool surrounds and new-build completions. The brief is usually the same: a timber-look finish that holds up outdoors without the upkeep real timber demands.
Timber decking and pergolas have real appeal, the warmth, the texture. But outdoors is exactly where timber struggles most: constant sun, rain, humidity and temperature swings cause warping, splitting, splintering and colour loss, which means a recurring cycle of sanding, staining and resealing. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles deliver that outdoor aesthetic without the ongoing demands, built to handle direct sun, rain and whatever a British summer, and winter, can bring, so the space stays ready when you actually want to use it.
Knotwood Decking systems create the foundation of an outdoor space, a durable, comfortable, timber-look surface that handles weather, foot traffic and furniture without the upkeep timber decking demands.
Knotwood Pergola structures add shade, definition and architectural presence. They give a space its own sense of place, whether that's a quiet corner or the centrepiece of an entertaining area.
Yes. It resists moisture, UV and temperature cycling without warping, rotting or needing the sealing and sanding cycles timber decking requires. The profiles don’t swell, warp or rot through the UK’s seasonal swing from wet winters to warmer summers, and there is no annual treatment to keep up.
The profiles won’t rust or warp under wind and rain exposure, which is the material side of the question. The structural side depends on the pergola itself: height, span, post spacing and how exposed the site is all determine what a structure will carry, and a garden pergola in a sheltered courtyard is a different calculation to one on an open coastal plot. Engineering specifications are prepared for the specific structure, so send us the dimensions and the location and we will confirm what it needs to be.
Timber decking greys, cups, splits and gets slippery when wet within a few seasons of UK outdoor exposure without regular upkeep. Aluminium decking delivers the timber-look aesthetic without those vulnerabilities, and there is no sanding, oiling or resealing cycle. It’s also non-combustible, worth knowing for decking positioned close to a building.
In many cases a residential garden pergola falls within permitted development and doesn’t need planning permission, but that depends on size, height, position, proximity to boundaries and whether the property is listed or in a conservation area. The rules are set out in government planning guidance, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set their own. Confirm with your local planning authority before proceeding. This is exactly the kind of detail worth checking before ordering rather than after.
Yes, and it is a common use. Aluminium is lighter than most alternative decking materials, which matters on a roof where the structure has a defined load limit, and it does not absorb moisture. What needs designing for the specific building is the supporting structure, the fall for drainage and the interface with the waterproofing membrane below, none of which are decided by the decking. Send us the roof details and we will confirm how the deck should be built up and what documentation you will need.
Knotwood’s outdoor living range covers decking planks for floor surfaces, pergola and louvre roof systems for overhead structures, ceiling battens and cladding for undercover soffits, screening and louvre panels for privacy and shade, and batten systems for feature walls and fence-adjacent elements. The finish range is consistent across all of them, so a garden can be specified as one coordinated design rather than several separately chosen products that happen to sit near each other.
Very little. A wash with mild soap and water is typically all that’s needed, and unlike timber, aluminium won’t grey, split, warp or need periodic sanding and resealing, one of the main reasons it’s chosen over timber for outdoor living across UK properties.
Yes. The profiles are non-corrosive, UV resistant and non-warping, and their performance isn’t affected by the swing between damp UK winters and warmer summers. There’s no need for seasonal treatments or covering the structure over winter the way a timber pergola might need.
Solid powder coated colours and sublimated timber grain finishes, applied at the factory rather than painted on site. The same range runs across decking, pergolas and screens, so an outdoor space can be finished consistently rather than assembled from products that nearly match. See our finishes page for the current range.
Operable louvre systems are adjusted by a control bar that rotates every blade in the run together. Where a project needs motorised or automated control rather than manual operation, contact our team with the requirement and we will confirm what can be supplied for the application and who fits it.
The decking profiles carry a slip resistant coating as part of the sublimated timber grain finish, which is specific to the decking range rather than a standard powder coat. Aluminium also doesn’t develop the algae film that makes an ageing timber deck slippery in a wet UK winter. Where a project has a defined slip resistance requirement, such as a commercial terrace, contact our team and we will provide the test documentation that applies.
Yes, and it usually works out better that way. The deck substructure and the pergola footings interact, so setting both out together avoids a post landing where a joist needs to be. Where an outdoor living project includes both, tell us at the design stage and we will coordinate the setting out rather than leaving it to be resolved on site with the deck already down.
That depends on the size of the structure, the height and how exposed the site is, since the footings carry the wind load. A small courtyard structure and an open-garden pergola of the same footprint can need very different foundations. Engineering specifications are prepared for the specific structure, so send us the dimensions and the location and we will confirm what the footings need to be.
Often yes, and it is a common way to lift a tired outdoor living area without lifting the slabs. The existing surface needs to be sound and reasonably level, and the build-up height matters because it changes the step down from any door threshold. Drainage also needs checking, since water has to be able to get away from under the deck rather than sit against the house.
Water passes between the boards and needs somewhere to go, so the sub-base has to fall away from the building rather than towards it. On a solid base like an existing patio, that fall usually exists already. On a new build-up it needs designing in. Getting this right is the difference between an outdoor living space that stays dry underneath and one that holds damp against a wall.
Lighting is commonly run within aluminium pergola profiles and under decking nosings, and heaters are frequently mounted to pergola beams. Both need planning before manufacture, because cable routes and fixing points are much easier to allow for than to retrofit. If lighting or heating is part of the brief for your outdoor living space, tell us early and we will work the provision into the design.
Profiles are manufactured to order rather than held in every finish, so lead time depends on the products, the finish and the quantity. Standard powder coated colours and timber grain finishes run faster than a bespoke colour. Most garden projects are seasonal and everyone wants the same delivery window, so if the work is tied to a date, talk to us early rather than in spring.
