A feature wall has to survive more than a design trend. It has to survive the room it’s in. UK interiors run through a heating season every year, and that cycle of warm, dry air against cold external walls is exactly what makes timber move, cup and open up at the joints indoors, not just outdoors. Knotwood’s aluminium interior wall battens and cladding give a room the same warmth and texture as timber, without that seasonal movement.
Designers specify them on commercial fit-outs where a reception or hospitality space needs to look as considered in year five as it did on opening day, without a repaint or refit in between tenants. Builders use them on flat conversions and multi-unit residential schemes where matching a finish across several units matters more than it would in a single home. Homeowners reach for them on the more personal brief: a feature wall in a period conversion or a Victorian terrace, where the room needs warmth but the wall behind it is old enough that you don’t want to be maintaining a real timber finish on top of everything else the building already asks of you.
Timber indoors marks, swells and changes colour under exactly the conditions most UK interiors create: central heating drying it out, bathrooms and utility spaces adding moisture back in, high-traffic hallways wearing the finish down faster than a feature wall in a spare room ever would. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles hold the timber-look warmth without any of that seasonal movement, so a hallway or reception wall specified today still looks the way it did at handover.
Knotwood Battens create a layered, dimensional wall with shadow lines and rhythm. They suit feature walls, reception areas, hallways and any space where texture is part of the design intent.
Knotwood Cladding delivers a continuous, finished wall surface. It suits interiors that call for a clean, monolithic look with the warmth of a timber finish.
Yes. Aluminium wall cladding and batten systems do not absorb moisture, unlike timber or MDF-based cladding, which swells or delaminates when it takes on moisture repeatedly. That makes it a practical choice for bathrooms, laundries and commercial kitchens, spaces where a timber feature wall would need resealing on a cycle that an aluminium one doesn’t.
Yes, and durability matters more here than it does in a home. A reception area or hospitality fit-out gets handled, knocked and cleaned far more often than a residential feature wall, and the finish still has to look considered between fit-out cycles that might be years apart. Aluminium’s low-maintenance profile holds up to that use pattern in a way a repainted or resealed timber surface wouldn’t.
Knotwood aluminium wall cladding and batten systems use concealed fixings, so the installed face is clean and free of visible fastener heads. The profiles can be fixed to timber, steel or masonry substrates, including the solid brick and lath-and-plaster walls common in older UK properties. The fixing method is chosen to suit the substrate rather than following one universal approach, and older walls in particular need assessing before a method is settled. Send us a section through the wall or photographs of what is there and we will confirm the fixing detail.
Batten systems create a cavity between the profile and the backing wall, which gives acoustic insulation somewhere to sit. Where that cavity is insulated as part of the wall build-up, the assembly can contribute to how a room handles sound. It is worth being clear about the limits: this is a lining system, not a party-wall soundproofing solution, and acoustic performance is a property of the whole wall construction rather than the cladding on its own. If a project has a specific acoustic requirement, that needs designing at wall level and we can talk through where the battens fit into it.
Cladding creates a continuous, flush surface, the right choice when the brief wants a clean, monolithic wall. Battens are fixed with visible spacing, creating the shadow-line texture used on feature walls and reception areas. The practical difference on site is that battens leave the wall behind partially visible between profiles while cladding fully covers it, which is also why a battened wall can carry acoustic insulation in the cavity behind the profiles in a way that cladding cannot.
Yes, and orientation is where most of the design decision happens. Vertical battens read taller and suit hallways or narrow rooms, horizontal battens suit a wider feature wall or a lower-ceilinged room where you don’t want to draw the eye further up. Both use the same profile range, the choice is about the room, not the material.
Yes. Aluminium with a powder coated finish is a hard, non-porous surface that cleans with standard commercial products, which suits healthcare, education and institutional settings where surfaces are cleaned to a schedule rather than as needed. It will not absorb moisture, and there is no oiling, sealing or repainting cycle to work around in an occupied building. Where a project has a specific infection control or hygiene specification to meet, contact our team and we will provide the documentation we hold for the profile.
Yes, in most cases. Profiles are fixed to a sub-frame or directly to the existing substrate depending on condition, which makes retrofitting realistic on the refurbishment and conversion projects common across the UK’s older housing stock, where stripping a wall back to bare masonry isn’t always practical or desirable.
Knotwood aluminium interior wall battens and cladding are available in solid powder coated colours and in sublimated timber grain finishes, consistent with the wider Knotwood range. That consistency is useful on a project also specifying ceiling battens or exterior cladding, since the same finish can be matched or deliberately varied across a building. See our finishes page for the current range.
Yes. Unlike timber, the profiles don’t warp, swell or mark easily, and there is no sanding, sealing or repainting cycle. In practice that means the maintenance conversation for an aluminium feature wall is “wipe it down”, where a timber one is “recoat it”, a difference that adds up over the life of a commercial fit-out or a family home.
Knotwood aluminium wall cladding and batten profiles are manufactured in Australia by a family-owned business with a track record across residential and commercial projects, and supplied to the UK market. Contact our team for current UK stock availability and lead times.
Yes. Stairwells and corridors take more everyday knocks than almost any other interior surface, from bags and furniture to pushchairs, so the concealed fixing system matters here specifically: there are no exposed fasteners or edges to catch or loosen with repeated contact. Wall and ceiling linings in circulation spaces and escape routes also carry reaction to fire requirements under Approved Document B, so contact our team with the building type and we will provide the classification documentation for the profile.
Yes, and it is one of the things that separates a batten system from a panel product. Because each profile is fixed individually to the sub-frame rather than arriving as a rigid sheet, a run can follow a curved reception desk, a rounded corner or a bulkhead, with the sub-frame set out to the radius and the battens fixed to it in sequence. Tighter radii need closer sub-frame centres and, depending on the curve, a narrower profile. Aluminium wall cladding in flat sheet form cannot do this, which is usually the reason a project ends up with battens on the curve and cladding on the flat walls either side.
