Aluminium balustrades have one job that can’t be compromised: keeping people safe. But it also sits in plain view on a deck, staircase, balcony or pool surround, so it has to look like it belongs there too. Knotwood’s aluminium screen systems are built to meet both requirements, whether that’s a straightforward decking balustrade along a raised patio or a stair balustrade running the full height of a feature staircase.
Builders use them to meet building regulations on multi-residential projects, where the same profile needs to carry consistently across dozens of balconies rather than being specified once and forgotten. Architects specify them for feature staircases where the balustrade, and often the aluminium handrail that runs with it, is as much a design decision as the treads themselves. Homeowners install them on decks, balconies and pool areas where the finish matters as much as the compliance underneath it.
Timber balustrades can look striking when they’re new, but they sit in some of the most exposed positions on a property, decks, balconies, stairs and pool surrounds, all areas that see constant sun, rain and moisture. In those positions timber splits, greys, swells and fatigues structurally over time, which isn’t something you want creeping up on a safety feature specifically. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles deliver the timber-look balustrade finish people want, in a system built to handle the exposure these locations bring without that structural decline.
Knotwood Screens form the core balustrade panels. They offer a dimensional, considered look that controls sightlines and adds texture, while meeting the practical demands of a balustrade: strength, consistency and a finish that lasts.
Yes. Balustrades in the UK must comply with UK Building Regulations, particularly Approved Document K (protection from falling), which sets minimum height, loading and gap requirements for barriers on stairs, balconies and raised platforms. Building control sign-off is required for new installations and replacements in most cases. Always confirm requirements with your installer and local building control authority before proceeding.
Yes, on most existing balconies, decks or staircases, provided the underlying structure is sound. This is a common route for a decking balustrade retrofit specifically, replacing a timber balustrade that’s failed structurally without rebuilding the deck itself. Custom fabrication of the screen panels means a precise fit is achievable, along with a finish that integrates cleanly rather than sitting over the existing structure awkwardly.
Guarding and barrier requirements in the UK are set by the Building Regulations, principally Approved Document K for protection from falling, which governs barrier height, the loads a guard must resist and the maximum opening between members. Compliance is determined by the installed assembly, including the posts, the fixings and what they are fixed into, rather than by the panel alone. Contact our team with the fall height, the building use and the structure you are fixing to, and we will confirm what we can supply and provide the engineering documentation to support it.
Yes. The profiles don’t rust or absorb moisture and the powder coated finish provides the barrier against the weather, which suits exposed outdoor positions including decks, balconies and pool surrounds. They are equally at home indoors on a feature stair, where the finish is part of the design rather than only a safety requirement.
Timber balustrades sit in some of the most exposed positions on a property, and in those positions timber splits, greys, swells and can degrade over time. That matters more here than on a decorative element, because a balustrade is a safety-critical part of the building. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles deliver the timber-look aesthetic without rotting, warping or needing an annual treatment cycle to stay sound.
Modular extruded aluminium profiles with a durable powder-coated finish, built on the architectural screen range and using concealed fixings. Profiles are available in a range of colours and timber-look finishes, and the modular construction means panels, and the balustrade panels specifically, can be configured to different heights and layouts to suit the project.
Residential deck and balcony balustrades, stair screens and feature staircases, pool balustrades and surrounds, and renovation projects replacing ageing or non-compliant systems. The same profile carries consistently across multiple elements on the same build, useful when a decking balustrade and a stair balustrade both need to read as one design on the same property.
Aluminium suits pool surrounds well as a material, because it doesn’t absorb moisture and doesn’t rust in a wet, chlorinated environment. Where a balustrade is also acting as a pool safety barrier rather than a guard against falling, that is a separate requirement with its own rules on height, gaps, climbability and self-closing gates. Tell us what the barrier needs to do before you specify it, and we will confirm what we can supply.
Very little. They don’t rot, split, warp or grey the way timber does in exposed positions, and there is no periodic sanding, sealing or repainting to keep up. A wash with mild soap and water is usually enough, a meaningful difference for a safety feature that shouldn’t be neglected just because maintaining it is inconvenient.
Balustrades are quoted per project rather than sold at a fixed rate. The main variables are total run length, height, the infill you choose, the finish and whether you are fixing to a new structure or retrofitting to something existing. Retrofits usually cost more because the fixing and set-out have to work around what is already there. Send us your drawings or rough dimensions and we will price it.
Yes. Builders use them to meet building regulations on apartment balconies and multi-storey decks, where dozens of balustrade panels need to match exactly rather than vary slightly from unit to unit. Architects specify them for feature staircases where the balustrade is part of the design statement. The modular, consistently finished profiles suit the documentation and repeatability requirements of larger commercial specifications.
Knotwood balustrade systems are built on the architectural screen range and manufactured in Australia by a family-owned business with a track record across residential and commercial projects, then supplied to the UK market. Contact our team for current UK stock availability and lead times.
Aluminium balustrades are built on the architectural screen range, so the infill uses the same profiles as the screens and fencing: vertical slats at varying spacings, or geometric square, rectangle and trapezoid profiles set in a channel. Spacing is set to suit the design and the opening limits that apply to the location. Because it is the same profile family, a balustrade can match a screen or fence elsewhere on the property rather than reading as a separate product.
Post spacing depends on the infill, the height and the loading the guard has to resist, which varies with where it is and what the building is used for. A domestic deck and a commercial walkway are different calculations at the same height. Engineering specifications are prepared for the specific configuration, so send us the run length, the height and the building use and we will confirm the post centres.
Yes. A clip-on handrail fixes along the top of the run, with a rounded or rectangular cap finishing it. Where a handrail is required rather than optional, such as alongside a stair, the height and profile are set by the Building Regulations rather than by preference. Tell us where the run is and we will confirm what applies and what we can supply.
Yes. Runs can be raked to follow a stair flight or stepped to follow a fall, and the infill is set out to the rake rather than sitting level within a sloping frame. Stairs also bring their own requirements for guard height, which is measured differently on the flight than on a landing. Send us the stair drawings, including the going and the rise, and we will work the setting out through before anything is manufactured.
Carefully, and it should be designed rather than decided on site. Fixing through a waterproofing membrane creates a penetration that has to be detailed and sealed properly, which is why some balconies use a fascia-fixed or side-fixed post rather than a top-fixed one. The right approach depends on the balcony construction and who is warranting the waterproofing. Send us a section through the balcony edge and we will confirm the fixing method that suits it.
