Aluminium privacy screens are panels of extruded aluminium profiles, fixed or framed, used to control sightlines while still allowing airflow and light through. Knotwood manufactures three screen systems in Australia, Geoline, Geofix and Stand-Up Battens, which carry across screening, fencing, gates, balustrades and partitions.

A good screen does two things at once: it shapes how a space feels and how it’s seen. Knotwood’s screens are engineered to strike that balance without losing the architectural interest that makes a screen worth specifying.

It’s a foundation system that runs through several of Knotwood’s most-used applications. Screens form the basis of our screening, fencing and gates, balustrades and partition systems, which means specifying from this range gives a project a single, considered look that can carry across multiple elements.

Every screen system in the range shares the same aluminium construction, concealed fixings, multiple installation methods and architectural-grade finishes developed and tested in Australia. Are Knotwood aluminium screens a genuine alternative to timber screening in Australia?

Yes. Knotwood aluminium screens use a sublimated timber grain finish bonded to a powder coated aluminium base, delivering the appearance of real timber without the warping, splitting, recoating or termite risk. They suit Australia’s coastal, bushfire-prone and high-UV environments.

Are Knotwood aluminium screens BAL-40 compliant for use in bushfire-prone areas?

Knotwood aluminium screens are tested to AS 1530.1 and AS/NZS 1530.3, and the aluminium substrate is non-combustible. Bushfire construction is assessed against AS 3959 using the Bushfire Attack Level for your site, and compliance is determined by the assembly rather than the material alone. Send us your BAL rating and the application and our technical team will confirm what we can supply.

How do Knotwood aluminium screens perform in coastal environments near the ocean?

Knotwood aluminium screens are designed to withstand harsh Australian coastal conditions. The 6063 or 6060 series aluminium alloy combined with a VOC-free powder coat and non-chromate pre-treatment provides strong resistance to salt air corrosion. For installations within 1km of the ocean, Knotwood recommends specifying marine-grade stainless steel fasteners (grade 316) and confirming warranty conditions with the Knotwood team.

What warranty do Knotwood aluminium screens come with?

Knotwood screens carry a standard 15 year warranty, with up to 25 years on selected finishes. The term that applies depends on the finish specified, and the full terms and conditions are set out on our warranty page. If you need warranty documentation for a submission or for a client, send us the request and we will supply it.

What maintenance do Knotwood aluminium screens realistically need over 10 to 15 years?

Periodic washing with water and a pH-neutral detergent using a soft broom is all that is required. There is no sanding, staining, oiling, recoating or repainting at any point, which is the practical difference from timber screening in Australia’s climate. Frequency depends on exposure: an inland courtyard needs very little, while a coastal installation should be washed more often to clear salt deposits before they sit on the finish. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners, since those can mark the powder coat. Finish warranty terms are set out on our warranty page.

Can Knotwood aluminium screens be specified on commercial and multi-residential projects?

Yes. Knotwood screens are used across residential, multi-residential, commercial and civic projects throughout Australia. Products are engineered to Australian structural design standards including the AS/NZS 1170 series and AS/NZS 1664.1. BIM content and engineering documentation are available for architect and specifier use.

Are Knotwood aluminium screens recyclable?

Yes. Knotwood aluminium profiles are made from recyclable aluminium. At end of life, the material can be recovered and recycled without degradation of quality. The manufacturing process uses non-chromate pre-treatment and VOC-free powder coatings. For projects targeting a Green Star rating, your certifier will assess the product documentation against the relevant credits.

What screen systems does Knotwood offer and how do they differ?

Knotwood offers three screen systems for different applications. Geoline provides a distinctive geometric profile suited to contemporary screens and fencing. Geofix is a fixed-post structural system designed for fencing, gates and facade screening where a more substantial approach is needed. Stand-Up Battens create striking vertical screen installations well suited to privacy, fencing and facade work.

Can the same Knotwood screen profile be used across fencing, balustrades and partitions in one project?

Yes. Every screen system in the Knotwood range shares the same aluminium construction, concealed fixings, multiple installation methods and architectural-grade finishes. This means a single screen profile can work as a privacy divider in one part of a project and a balustrade panel or fence line in another, delivering a consistent wood grain finish and low-maintenance performance throughout.

How high can a privacy screen be?

Two things set the limit. Planning rules for boundary and privacy screening vary by council, so check locally before settling on a height. The other is structural: a taller panel carries more wind load, and the load depends on the open area of the profile and the exposure of the site as much as the height itself. Where the panel forms part of a barrier rather than sitting in front of one, it becomes a fall-protection element and has to be engineered for barrier loading under AS 1170. Knotwood systems are engineered to Australian structural design standards, and our technical team can confirm what is achievable for your height, location and fixing.

Can Knotwood aluminium screens be installed on a balcony?

Yes. Balcony privacy is one of the most common applications, particularly on multi-residential projects where sightlines between neighbouring balconies need controlling without blocking light or airflow. Panels fix with concealed fixings for a clean finish. The critical question to settle early is whether the panel sits in front of an existing balustrade or forms part of the barrier itself, because that changes both the structural requirement and the fixing detail. Where it forms the barrier, it must be engineered for barrier loading under AS 1170. Send us the balcony framing detail and we will work through the fixing with you.

What applications are Knotwood aluminium screens used for?

Knotwood screens cover a broad range of applications: privacy screening for courtyards and alfresco areas, fencing and gate systems for residential and commercial boundaries, balustrades for decks, stairs and balconies, and partition and room-divider systems in commercial and residential interiors. The same screen systems underpin all these applications, giving projects a single consistent look across multiple elements.

Can Knotwood screen panels be made to custom sizes?

Yes. Panels are fabricated to project dimensions rather than supplied in fixed sizes, which is what allows a run to finish cleanly at a wall, a post or a change in level instead of ending in a cut-down panel. Profile spacing can also be set to suit the privacy level and the look you are after. What constrains the panel is span rather than the fabrication: a wider panel needs more support, and how much depends on the profile and the wind exposure of the site. Send us your setout and we will confirm the panel sizes and post positions to suit it.

What documentation is available for specifying Knotwood screen systems?

Knotwood provides BIM content, CAD files and engineering documentation for architect and specifier use. Drawings cover product componentry through to general detailing, and basic 2D DWG files are available. Products are engineered to Australian structural design standards including the AS/NZS 1170 series and AS/NZS 1664.1, and test reports and product documentation are provided on request against the application and building class for your project. How are Knotwood screen panels fixed in place?

It depends on what the panel is fixing to. Freestanding runs use posts set into footings, with the footing depth determined by the height of the panel and the wind exposure of the site. Panels fixed to an existing structure use brackets sized to the substrate, which is why a fixing into masonry differs from one into a timber or steel frame. Balcony and balustrade applications are different again, because the panel is fixed to the building’s framing and, where it forms part of the barrier, has to be engineered for barrier loading. Fixings are concealed in all cases, so nothing is visible on the finished face.
