An aluminium pergola system is a modular structure of aluminium posts, beams and battens that creates shade over an outdoor space. Knotwood’s Geo Structure is an engineered, configurable pergola system with concealed fixings and timber-look finishes, suited to alfresco areas and outdoor rooms.
An outdoor space only earns its place in daily life once it’s shaded properly, somewhere to sit through the middle of the day, somewhere that still feels like part of the home when the sun is high. Knotwood’s aluminium pergola systems are built to do exactly that: architectural outdoor shading structures designed for the realities of Australian conditions, and finished to bring genuine timber warmth to an outdoor room.
For homeowners planning an alfresco upgrade or builders finishing an outdoor living area, Knotwood pergola systems combine considered design with the durability and low maintenance only an engineered aluminium structure can offer.
Every pergola system in the range is built from modular aluminium, with concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes made for Australian conditions. The result is a shading structure that holds its shape through harsh sun, heavy rain and everything in between.

Geo Structure is Knotwood’s engineered, modular pergola system, built from posts, beams and clip batten shapes that combine to create a custom outdoor structure. The same aluminium construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes run through every component.
An aluminium pergola system is a modular outdoor shading structure built from engineered aluminium profiles, posts and beams, rather than from timber or steel. The posts carry the load to the ground or to a footing, the beams span between them, and the roof is either open, fixed or operable depending on how much shade and shelter the space needs. Because the components are modular, the structure is set out to the space rather than built to a fixed size, and because it is aluminium, it does not carry the movement, rot or refinishing cycle that a timber pergola does.
Council approval requirements vary by state, territory and local government area, and typically depend on the size, height and location of the structure. Approval itself is a state and council matter, so check with your local council before installing. The construction standards the structure has to meet come from the National Construction Code, published by the Australian Building Codes Board.
Wind loading on a pergola depends on its height, span, roof type and the exposure of the site, so it is set by the structural design rather than by the material. Knotwood pergola systems are engineered to Australian structural design standards, and a site-specific design is required for the installation. Send us your address and the size of the structure and we will confirm the wind region that applies and the design that suits it.
Yes, depending on the system. An operable louvre roof lets you set the blade angle through the day and through the year, opening up for winter sun and closing down for summer shade or rain. Motorised options give you that control from a remote or a wall switch, and manual systems do the same job with a crank or lever. Retractable panels are another approach, giving full shade when extended and full sky when back. Fixed systems are set at installation, which suits a project where the shading requirement does not change or where the pergola is positioned so the sun angle does the work. Tell us how you want to use the space through the year and we will point you to the right configuration.
Knotwood’s aluminium profiles are non-combustible. Bushfire construction is assessed against AS 3959 using the Bushfire Attack Level for your site, and compliance is determined by the whole structure rather than the material alone. If you are building on bushfire-prone land, send us your BAL rating and we will confirm what we can supply.
Aluminium conducts heat, so a surface in direct sun will be warm, and it sheds that heat quickly once shaded. Surface temperature depends mostly on the colour and finish, since darker colours absorb more solar radiation. A pergola roof is not a surface people touch in normal use, but if that matters for your design, tell us and we will recommend a lighter finish.
Both work, and the choice affects the engineering more than the appearance. An attached aluminium pergola transfers load into the house, so the wall or roof structure it fixes to has to be able to carry it, and the flashing at the junction has to be detailed properly to keep water out. A freestanding aluminium pergola carries its own load through its posts and footings, which makes it independent of the house but usually means larger footings. Knotwood systems use sturdy yet lightweight posts and beams suited to both, in gardens, patios, courtyards and poolside areas. Send us the location and how you want it positioned and we will confirm what the system can accommodate.
Yes. The lightweight construction suits elevated areas like decks and rooftops, where added weight matters. A rooftop or elevated installation needs the supporting structure assessed and the pergola engineered for wind uplift at that height, so involve your engineer early. Send us the deck or roof detail and your engineer’s advice on what it can carry, and we will work through the structure with you.
Knotwood aluminium pergola systems are commonly specified for alfresco and outdoor entertaining areas, poolside structures, deck and patio renovations, and commercial or hospitality outdoor spaces that need a durable, low-maintenance shading structure. Hospitality is a growing application, because an outdoor dining area that works through more of the year is worth more to the venue, and a shading structure that does not need annual refinishing avoids taking the space out of service. On residential projects the pergola is often added at the same time as a deck, which is worth coordinating, since the deck framing and the pergola footings interact.
Aluminium does not rot, warp, split or require periodic painting or oiling the way timber does. It holds its structural shape through Australian heat and humidity. Knotwood’s timber-look powder coat finishes mean you can achieve the warmth of a timber aesthetic with the durability and low maintenance of an engineered aluminium system.
Knotwood pergolas come in architectural-grade finishes, including timber-look grains alongside solid colours. They are made for Australian sun and weather, and unlike timber they do not need oiling or repainting. The full range is on our finishes page, and the finish warranty terms are on our warranty page.
Geo Structure is Knotwood’s aluminium pergola system. It is a modular shading structure for residential and commercial outdoor areas, using concealed fixings and the same architectural finishes used across the Knotwood range, so a pergola can be specified to match decking, screens or cladding on the same project. Because the system is modular, it is set out to the dimensions of the space rather than supplied in fixed sizes, and the post positions are determined by the span and the site conditions. Send us the area you are covering and we will confirm the configuration.
Very little. There is no sanding, staining, oiling or resealing cycle at any point, which is the main practical difference from a timber pergola. Washing down with water and a pH-neutral detergent handles dirt, pollen and general grime. In coastal locations, wash more often to clear salt deposits before they sit on the finish, and avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners, since those can mark the powder coat. On an operable louvre system the moving parts are worth checking annually, along with clearing leaves and debris from the blades and any guttering so water keeps draining the way it is meant to.
Yes, and it is worth planning at design stage rather than after the structure is up. Aluminium profiles can be drilled and fitted with standard hardware, and the modular sections allow cabling to be run within the structure so it stays out of sight. Ceiling fans and outdoor heaters carry weight and, in the case of a fan, dynamic load, so the fixing point needs confirming against the beam it mounts to. Heaters also have clearance requirements set by the manufacturer, which matter more under a solid or closed louvre roof than an open one. Send us what you want to fit and where, and we will confirm the detail with your installer.

Inspiration
Set against the relaxed coastal landscape of Belongil Beach, Saint Rocky’s is a tropical modernism Byron Bay home designed around open spaces, natural materials and an easy connection to the outdoors.
Inspiration
The colour palette is a masterclass in balance. Queensland Walnut battens bring rich warmth and natural character to the exterior, setting the tone for a home that feels both refined and inviting. Their natural timber appearance softens the strong lines while delivering the durability and low maintenance of aluminium.
