Aluminium louvres are angled blades set into a frame to control light, airflow and privacy. Knotwood makes fixed and operable aluminium louvre systems in timber-look and powder coat finishes, specified for privacy screens, balcony and pool-side screening, and pergola structures.
Louvres solve a problem that a flat surface can’t: how to control light, airflow and privacy all at once, and adjust the balance between them as the day or the season changes. Knotwood aluminium louvres bring that flexibility to screens and outdoor structures, in a range built for the realities of Australian sun, heat and weather.
Knotwood louvres are specified for privacy screens, balcony and courtyard screening, boundary and pool-side screening, and pergola structures. Whichever application they’re going into, they combine genuine design flexibility with the durability and low maintenance an engineered aluminium system delivers.
The blade angle determines how much light, airflow and privacy the system lets through. Fixed louvres are set at a permanent angle for consistent shade, operable louvres adjust to changing conditions through the day.
Both systems in the range share the same aluminium construction, concealed fixings, multiple installation methods and architectural-grade finishes made for Australian conditions.

Fixed Louvres are Knotwood’s set-and-forget blade system, the angle is fixed in place at installation, delivering permanent privacy and solar shading with nothing to adjust and nothing to maintain beyond the system’s natural low upkeep.
Operable Louvres put the control in your hands. Each blade rotates on a shared control bar, adjusting light, airflow and privacy as conditions change through the day, opening a space up when the weather’s kind and closing it down when it isn’t.
Aluminium louvres are blade-shaped extruded aluminium profiles installed in a parallel arrangement to control the passage of light, air and sightlines through a screen or opening. The angle of the blade determines how much light and airflow passes through and how much visual privacy the system provides. They are used for privacy screens, balcony and courtyard screening, boundary and pool-side screening, and pergolas.
In architecture, a louvre is a series of angled blades or slats fitted into a frame to allow air and light to pass through while controlling visibility and solar exposure. The principle is old, going back to wood shutters and ventilated roof lanterns. What makes a louvre useful is that it does several things at once: it shades, it screens, it ventilates, and it gives a structure depth and rhythm that a flat panel cannot. That is why louvres are often used on the western side of an outdoor area, where the afternoon sun is hardest to deal with.
No. Louvre windows are a glazed window system with blades set into a window frame, and aluminium shutters are typically a hinged or sliding panel fitted to an opening. Knotwood louvres are architectural blade systems built into screens and structures, used for privacy, solar shading and airflow across facades, balconies, boundaries and pergolas.
Fixed aluminium louvres are set at a designed angle to deliver permanent solar shading or privacy. The angle is worked out from the orientation and the sun path, so the blades block the high summer sun while still letting winter light through, and once installed nothing changes. Operable aluminium louvres can be adjusted through the day to respond to changing light, airflow and privacy requirements, either by hand or by motor. Fixed systems suit a position with a predictable shading problem and no need for user control. Operable systems suit spaces people occupy and adjust, like an alfresco area or a balcony. Both share the same aluminium construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finish range.
Knotwood offers two aluminium louvre systems in Australia: Fixed Louvres, which deliver permanent privacy and solar shading for screens and outdoor structures; and Operable Louvres, which can be adjusted to control light, airflow and privacy as conditions change. Both systems share the same concealed fixings, modular construction and architectural-grade finish range.
Aluminium louvres are commonly specified for privacy screens on balconies and courtyards, screening on north and west-facing aspects where afternoon sun is the problem, boundary and pool-side screening where airflow still matters, and pergola structures that benefit from adjustable shade. Both fixed and operable systems suit residential and commercial projects.
Yes. Aluminium louvre screens are a common choice for balcony and courtyard privacy applications. The blade angle determines how much of the sightline is blocked from outside while still allowing air and filtered light through. Both fixed and operable louvre systems are suited to balcony screening on residential and commercial projects.
Aluminium louvres shade an opening or an outdoor space by intercepting direct sunlight at the blade angle. On north and west-facing aspects, where solar heat gain is greatest in Australia, fixed louvres can be set to block the highest sun angles while operable louvres allow the blade angle to be adjusted to respond to conditions through the day, reducing the heat load reaching the space behind. External shading is one of the measures recognised under the energy efficiency provisions of the National Construction Code.
Louvre blades span between supporting frames or posts, and the achievable span depends on the blade profile, its depth and the wind exposure of the site. A deeper blade spans further, which is why an exposed position often uses a heavier profile than a sheltered courtyard screen for the same visual effect. Frames fix to the building structure, to posts, or to a substructure depending on the application, and fixings are concealed so nothing is visible on the finished face. Because span, spacing and wind load interact, the setout is worked through per project rather than taken from a standard table. Send us your drawings and location and we will confirm what is achievable.
Knotwood aluminium is not deemed combustible when tested to AS 1530.1, and achieves a Spread of Flame Index of 0 to AS/NZS 1530.3. The profiles also hold a Group Number 1 classification under AS 5637.1, the highest of the four classifications for wall and ceiling linings. Bushfire construction is assessed against AS 3959 using the Bushfire Attack Level for the site, and compliance is determined by the assembly rather than the material alone. Louvre systems have not been assessed as a standalone bushfire element, so send us your BAL rating and the application and our technical team will confirm what we can supply
Knotwood aluminium louvres carry a powder coat warranty to AS 3715, and the term depends on the finish you specify. Woodgrain finishes use Interpon D STF and carry up to 15 years. Standard colours carry 10 years on Interpon D1000, or 25 years on Interpon D2525, the ultra-durable coating used on prestigious commercial and high-rise projects. All warranties must be registered to take effect. Full terms and the registration form are on our warranty page.

Knotwood aluminium louvre systems are finished with architectural-grade powder coatings made for Australian conditions. Both fixed and operable systems share the same finish range, giving consistent results across projects regardless of which system is used. The full range, including timber-look grains, is on our finishes page.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium louvres are manufactured in Australia with architectural-grade powder-coated finishes, designed for the realities of Australian sun, heat and weather across screening and pergola applications. Manufacturing locally means shorter lead times on Australian projects, which matters on louvres because they are often specified late once the rest of the outdoor works are set. It also means the engineering and finish documentation comes from the same place as the product, so blade spacing, span and fixing detail can be confirmed against your project rather than worked out from a generic datasheet.
Aluminium louvres with powder-coated finishes are low maintenance. Regular cleaning with a pH-neutral detergent and a soft cloth or brush is generally sufficient to remove dust and grime. No sanding, sealing or repainting is required. For coastal installations, wash more frequently to remove salt deposits, and check the warranty page for the maintenance schedule that applies to your finish.

Inspiration
Knotwood fixed louvres provide the look of timber with lasting durability. Designed to withstand the elements, the louvres offer privacy, shade, and airflow - ideal for the coastal climate.
Inspiration
Albatross draws on mid-century Palm Springs style, with smooth renders, natural stone, and warm timber tones that echo its coastal setting. Sub-tropical landscaping softens the architecture, while aluminium battens offer the look of timber with durability fit for the elements.
Inspiration
Introducing The Powerhouse, Burleigh’s latest coastal statement near the point and James Street. A façade of stone and white render is animated by Knotwood’s horizontal and vertical lines in Spruce conceal the garage, entry and screens while layering texture, warmth and contemporary coastal clarity.
