How does the Knotwood Flip Batten system work?

Each Flip Batten consists of two identical halves with a universal profile. The first half is fixed directly to the wall substructure using fasteners. The second half, acting as the cover, is then positioned with its outer upstands facing the first half, angled into place, and pressed firmly until the two profiles click together to form a complete rectangular hollow box section. No screws are visible on the finished surface.

Can Knotwood Flip Battens be used to conceal cables and wiring behind a feature wall?

Yes. The hollow box section formed when both Flip Batten halves are connected creates an internal void that can be used to route and conceal cables, electrical wiring, data cabling, or other services behind the wall surface. This makes Flip Battens particularly useful for feature walls where televisions, speakers, or lighting are integrated and clean cable management is required.

Why are Knotwood Flip Battens described as the slimmest interior wall batten system?

Flip Battens have the smallest wall protrusion of any Knotwood interior wall batten system. The slimmest profile, the KEF3816, measures just 38mm wide by 16mm deep. This minimal projection makes Flip Battens the preferred choice for narrow hallways, small rooms, or any space where wall depth is limited and a clean, low-profile batten appearance is required.

What Flip Batten profile sizes are available and when would I use each one?

Flip Battens are available in nine profiles ranging from the slim KEF3816 (38x16mm) to the wide KEF20025 (200x25mm). Slimmer profiles such as the KEF3816 and KEF6516 suit spaces where minimal wall protrusion is important. Wider profiles such as KEF10016 (100x16mm), KEF15016 (150x16mm), and KEF20025 create stronger horizontal shadow lines and bolder visual statements on larger wall areas.

Can Knotwood Flip Battens be installed on curved interior walls?

Yes. The Flip Batten system is suitable for curved wall installations, opening up design possibilities for curved feature walls, reception areas, and other non-linear architectural applications. The two-part profile construction allows the system to accommodate curved substructures. Spacing and sequencing can be adjusted to suit the radius of the curve.

What substrates and substructures are Knotwood Flip Battens compatible with?

Knotwood Flip Battens can be installed over a range of substructures including top hat sections, metal hollow sections, and timber sections. The first batten half is fixed directly to the substructure using 304 or 316 grade stainless steel fasteners with an insulating barrier or neoprene washer. In non-marine zones, hot-dip galvanised fasteners may also be used. This substrate flexibility suits both new builds and retrofits.

Why are Knotwood Flip Battens described as a low-cost batten wall option?

The Flip Batten system requires fewer components than bracket-based systems. Because each batten is a self-contained two-part profile that fixes directly to the substructure without separate clip brackets, the overall part count and associated labour time are reduced. This makes Flip Battens a cost-effective option for larger wall areas or budget-conscious residential feature wall projects.
