Interlocking decking planks lock into each other along their edges rather than being screwed through the face, so the finished deck shows no visible fasteners. Knotwood’s aluminium interlocking planks clip plank to plank over the substructure, giving a continuous surface that installs faster than a screwed deck and has nothing on the walking surface to corrode or work loose.
This system is a strong fit for homeowners wanting a clean, fastener-free deck finish without visible fixings, alfresco and entertaining areas where a continuous, considered surface matters, and renovation projects replacing an ageing timber deck with a low-maintenance system.
Interlocking Planks share the same aluminium construction and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of Knotwood’s decking range, fixed with 304 or 316 grade stainless steel fasteners, with hot-dip galvanised suitable outside marine zones. The profiles are non-combustible, and the wood grain surface is a slip resistant finish rated P5 under AS 4586.
Interlocking Planks come in a single 150mm width, installed with a dedicated Starter profile along the first edge, Plank Clips fixing each board to the support surface, and Cladding Trim or a hidden Plank Trim finishing the perimeter depending on whether an edge is exposed.
The Starter fixes along the first edge, then the first plank slides into it so its edge is held down and its clip fixes it to the support surface. Each following plank slides into the one before it, locking the join down as it clips into place, repeated row by row until the deck area is complete.
Interlocking Planks carry a sublimated timber grain surface with a textured profile underfoot, applied over a powder coat base. It is the only finish in the Knotwood range with a slip-resistant coating rather than a standard powder coat surface.
Inspiration
A minimalistic blend of mid century modernism and Palm Springs influence, this residence is attuned to light, views and landscape. Knotwood defines gates, screens, cladding, garage door, decking and fencing in Obsidian and White Ash, with charcoal decking underscoring a cool, timeless rhythm of restraint.
Designed to integrate seamlessly with decking stairways and landings, providing consistent lines and safe, stylish edge protection.
Combine Interlocking Planks with T-Clip Planks to add character to your design.
Enjoy a flawless finish with hidden fixings that enhance the clean lines and premium look of your installation.
Interlocking decking planks are a decking system where each aluminium plank locks into the next, building a continuous deck surface without exposed fasteners on top. The fixing is concealed within the interlocking joint, so the finished deck has a clean, uninterrupted face. Knotwood’s interlocking planks are made from extruded aluminium and are available in architectural-grade finishes including timber look options.
A standard screwed deck has visible fasteners driven through the face of each board. An interlocking system hides the fixing entirely inside the joint between planks, so there are no exposed screws on the surface. That removes visual disruption to the finish and eliminates the corrosion risk around surface fixings that comes with years of outdoor exposure in Australian conditions.
Interlocking aluminium decking planks suit residential decks, alfresco and entertaining areas, and renovation projects replacing an ageing timber deck. The concealed-fix system is a strong choice wherever a fastener-free surface finish is the design priority. The aluminium construction also makes the system appropriate for coastal environments where salt air would accelerate the deterioration of a timber or steel deck.
Aluminium decking is commonly used around pools because it does not absorb moisture and will not swell, warp or rot when exposed to water, pool chemicals or high humidity. The wood grain surface is rated P5 under AS 4586, the highest slip resistance classification in the pendulum test. Two things to confirm for a pool surround: the slip rating your project requires for that wet area, and the surface temperature in full sun, since any decking material heats up underfoot. Send us your project details and we will confirm the right profile and finish.
Yes. The wood grain surface is a slip resistant finish, rated P5 under AS 4586, which is the highest classification in the pendulum test. That rating applies to the surface as supplied. How a deck performs in use also depends on the fall, the drainage and how the surface is maintained, so keep it clear of leaf litter, debris and algae, particularly in shaded areas where moisture sits for longer after rain.
Yes, and they are suitable for bushfire-prone areas up to BAL-40. Knotwood aluminium is not deemed combustible when tested to AS 1530.1, and the decking achieves a Spread of Flame Index of 0 and a Smoke Developed Index of 2 when tested to AS/NZS 1530.3. CSIRO has assessed Knotwood interlocking decking as suitable where AS 3959-2018 requires non-combustible decking across BAL 12.5, BAL 19, BAL 29 and BAL 40, under Clauses 5.7.2.4(a), 6.7.2.4(a), 7.7.2.4(a) and 8.7.2.4(a). Timber and composite decking cannot meet the non-combustible requirement at the higher BAL levels.
Knotwood decking carries a powder coat warranty to AS 3715, and the term depends on the finish you specify. Woodgrain finishes use Interpon D STF and carry up to 15 years. Standard colours carry 10 years on Interpon D1000, or 25 years on Interpon D2525. All warranties must be registered to take effect. Full terms and the registration form are on our warranty page.
Knotwood does not publish fixed pricing, because decking is quoted on specification. The main variables are the finish, the deck area, the substructure and the trims the detail requires. Interlocking planks are quoted with the starter, joiners and end trims as part of the system rather than the boards alone. Send us your plans and we will quote it.
Interlocking Planks are available in solid powder coated colours and in timber-look aluminium finishes, with a wood grain surface over a powder coated base. That is the same architectural-grade finish range used across the Knotwood decking range, so a deck can be matched to screens or cladding on the same project. The full range is on our finishes page.
A Starter profile fixes along the first edge, then the first plank slides into it so its edge is held down and a Plank Clip fixes it to the support surface. Each following plank slides into the one before it, locking the join down as it clips into place, repeated row by row until the deck area is complete. Cladding Trim or a hidden Plank Trim finishes the perimeter, depending on whether the edge is exposed or sits against an adjoining wall or structure. Planks are 150mm wide and supplied in 6500mm lengths, installed on a supporting structure at continuous 450mm centres. The full installation guide is in our resources section.
Aluminium decking planks require very little maintenance compared to timber. There is no sanding, oiling, repainting or retreating involved. A periodic wash-down to remove dirt, grime and salt residue is typically all that is needed to keep the surface and finish in good condition. The aluminium construction means there is no risk of the planks cupping, swelling, splitting or rotting over time.
