Knotwood offers two decking systems: the Interlocking Plank system and the T-Clip Plank system. Both use extruded aluminium profiles and are designed for durability and low maintenance.

What are the key advantages of using aluminium decking over traditional timber or composite decking?

Knotwood’s aluminium decking is durable, resistant to mildew and mould, and will not cup or warp. It is low maintenance and recyclable at the end of its life.

How do the decking products handle thermal expansion and contraction?

The decking systems are designed to accommodate thermal movement. For the interlocking system, a T-section joiner trim can be used, particularly when boards run perpendicular to each other.

Do I need an expansion gap when joining lengths together?

No, our Knotwood decking can be joined together with no need for an expansion gap.

Do I need a special subframe for the decking?

No, our decking is compatible with both timber and metal joists. It is crucial to specify your subframe material at the time of purchase as the T-Clip Planks come with pre-set screws specific to either timber or metal. For best results, we recommend using a joist protector (rubber strip) to aid with movement and sound absorption.

What is the recommended joist spacing?

For residential use, joist centres up to 600mm are acceptable, but we advise 450mm centres for better consistency. For commercial applications, we recommend 300mm centres.

Can the decking be installed close to the ground?

Yes, one of the significant advantages of our aluminium decking is that it can be installed directly onto a slab or as low as possible, especially with a metal subframe. This is ideal for retrofit projects where clearance is limited.

What trims are available for finishing the deck edges?

We offer various finishing trims. The hidden angle trim is our default recommendation as it conceals fasteners for a superior finish. Other options, like a standard angle or Z trim, are also available depending on the application.

How are ripped boards handled?

If a board needs to be ripped, it should be placed on the inside of the deck, against a wall, for both stability and aesthetics. A Z trim can be used for additional support.

What is the warranty on the decking colours?

How do I get a termite inspection with Knotwood Decking Systems?

Our decking systems offer a solution for termite inspections. The Part A of the finishing trim can be inverted and mechanically fixed to create a 30mm access point for pest inspections, protecting your house structure. This solution can be achieved with both the Interlocking Plank and T-Clip Plank systems.

Where can I find more technical information?

We have various resources available, including slip resistance reports, temperature tests and accelerated wear test results. We also have Form 15 certification available for installers and builders to confirm product compliance and engineering details.

How hot does aluminium decking get in the sun?

Aluminium conducts heat, so a board in direct sun will be warm underfoot, as any decking material is, and it sheds that heat quickly once shaded or wet. Surface temperature depends mostly on the colour and the orientation of the deck. If the deck will be used barefoot in full sun, tell us the location and we will recommend a lighter finish.

How does aluminium decking compare to composite or timber in terms of lifespan?

Aluminium does not rot, warp or attract pests, and the powder coat finish does not need recoating. Timber and composite decking both require periodic maintenance to hold their appearance. Finish warranty terms are set out on our warranty page.

Is aluminium decking noisy when walked on?

Sound underfoot is minimal, especially when sound-dampening materials are placed between clips and framing. Proper installation ensures a solid, quiet surface.

Is aluminium decking slippery when wet?

No. Knotwood decking carries a P5 slip resistance rating, the highest classification under AS 4586. The slip resistance is built into the powder coating rather than applied as a surface treatment, and it covers the trims as well as the boards. That suits pool surrounds, alfresco areas and anywhere exposed to rain.

How much does aluminium decking cost?

Aluminium decking costs more upfront than timber. What you do not spend afterwards is the difference: no oiling, no sanding, no repainting and no replacing boards that have rotted or split. What maintenance does aluminium decking require?

Knotwood aluminium decking requires minimal maintenance compared to timber. Periodic washing with water and a mild detergent is all that is needed to keep the surface clean. There is no sanding, oiling, staining or repainting required at any stage. Is Knotwood aluminium decking non-combustible?

Aluminium is non-combustible, and Knotwood decking is rated up to Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) 40. Both the Interlocking and T-Clip systems can be installed to achieve BAL 40. On bushfire-prone land the whole deck is assessed, not just the board, so the subframe and what sits underneath form part of it.
