Aluminium weatherboard cladding replicates the horizontal, shiplap-inspired profile of traditional timber weatherboards in an extruded aluminium board. Knotwood’s Tab-Lock Weatherboard gives homeowners and builders that look without the cycle of painting, sanding and replacing the timber version demands. Available in a 150mm board, suited to full elevations and renovations alike.
This profile is a strong fit for homeowners who want the classic weatherboard house look without the upkeep, renovation projects replacing failing or high-maintenance timber weatherboards, and builders matching new sections of a build to an existing weatherboard exterior.
Weatherboards share the same aluminium construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of the Knotwood cladding range. They’re non-combustible, corrosion resistant and low maintenance, holding the weatherboard look without the maintenance cycle that comes with the timber original.
Weatherboards come in a single 150mm size. Boards install with a tab lock fixing system in 6500mm lengths, for a clean, secure finish without visible fasteners.
Each Weatherboards board hooks onto a tab-lock starter at the base and swings flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed cladding clip. Installation works from the bottom up, one board locking into the next, finishing with a cover trim pressed over the base trim to close the perimeter.
A tab-lock starter trim is fixed to the base trim around the perimeter of the cladding area, giving the first Weatherboards board a secure hook point to swing onto and setting up every board that follows in the same system.
Base and cover trims run the perimeter of a Weatherboards run, concealing fixings around wall edges, windows and doors, and pressing together for a clean finished line wherever the cladding starts or stops.
Reversible corner trims let a Weatherboards run continue cleanly around both internal and external corners. Boards install up to the corner, then a corner cover trim presses into the corner base trim to finish the join.

Aluminium weatherboard cladding is an aluminium cladding profile that replicates the horizontal, overlapping look of traditional timber weatherboards. Each board locks into the one below it, so the finished wall reads as a classic weatherboard elevation while behaving like aluminium: non-combustible, non-warping and with no painting or resealing cycle. Knotwood supplies it as the Tab-Lock Weatherboard in a 150mm board.
Timber weatherboards rot, split, cup and require regular painting, sanding and replacement over the life of a building. Aluminium weatherboards hold the same classic look without those maintenance demands. They are non-combustible, corrosion resistant and dimensionally stable, so the profile does not expand, contract and degrade the way timber does through Australian heat and humidity.
Both aluminium and composite weatherboard products replicate the timber weatherboard look without the maintenance. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles are non-combustible, which is a relevant consideration under the National Construction Code provisions for external cladding, and aluminium is recyclable at the end of its service life. Composite products vary by manufacturer and composition, so compare the two on the specifications for the products you are considering.
Aluminium is corrosion resistant, which is why it is commonly specified near the coast where salt air accelerates the deterioration of steel and untreated timber. How a finish performs depends on how close the site is to breaking surf, the exposure of the elevation and the cleaning regime, and marine-grade stainless fasteners are required within 1km of the ocean. Send us your site location and we will confirm the right finish and the maintenance schedule for that exposure.
Knotwood weatherboard cladding carries a powder coat warranty to AS 3715, and the term depends on the finish you specify. Woodgrain finishes use Interpon D STF and carry up to 15 years. Standard colours carry 10 years on Interpon D1000, or 25 years on Interpon D2525, the ultra-durable coating used on prestigious commercial and high-rise projects. All warranties must be registered to take effect. Full terms and the registration form are on our warranty page.
Knotwood does not publish fixed pricing, because cladding is quoted on specification. The main variables are the finish, the total area and the trims the detail requires. Weatherboards use a tab-lock starter plus base, cover and corner trims, and those matter to the final figure as much as the boards do. Send us your elevations and we will quote it.
Weatherboards come in a single 150mm board size, supplied in 6500mm lengths. Boards install with a tab lock fixing system, so there are no visible fasteners on the finished face.
Weatherboards are available in traditional solid powder coated colours and in a sublimated timber grain surface, the same architectural-grade finish range used across the Knotwood aluminium cladding range. That means Weatherboards can be specified alongside other Knotwood profiles on the same facade with a consistent finish. The full range is on our finishes page.
Each board hooks onto a tab lock starter trim at the base and swings flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed cladding clip. Installation works from the bottom up, one board locking into the next, finishing with a cover trim pressed over the base trim to close the perimeter. Reversible corner trims handle both internal and external corners. Substrate types, batten spacing and the full installation guide are in our resources section.
In many cases, yes. Because the system fixes to a substructure rather than directly to the wall, aluminium weatherboard cladding can often go over an existing weatherboard exterior without stripping it back, which is why it suits renovation work on older homes. What matters is whether the existing boards and the structure behind them are sound and able to carry the substructure and the new cladding, and whether the wall is straight enough for the substructure to be packed true. Have the existing wall assessed before you order, and send us the detail so we can confirm the right fixing method for it.
Yes. Knotwood’s aluminium weatherboard profile is designed as a direct replacement or match for traditional timber weatherboards, making it a strong choice for renovations where the brief is to update a weatherboard home without changing its character. The profile replicates the layered weatherboard look, so new sections match the existing exterior visually while adding the low-maintenance and non-combustible performance of aluminium.
Very little, which is the main reason people move off timber. There is no painting, sanding or resealing cycle at any point. Periodic washing with a soft broom, water and a pH neutral detergent is all that is required, and more often on coastal installations to clear salt deposits before they sit on the finish. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners, since those can mark the powder coat. Compared with a timber weatherboard house, which typically needs repainting every several years and board replacement over time, the ongoing cost sits close to zero. Clearing debris from around the base trim once a year keeps water draining the way it is meant to.
