Castellated aluminium cladding, also known as fluted cladding, is a profile shaped into a repeating rhythm of ridges and recesses that casts strong shadow lines across a facade. Knotwood’s Castellated Board is a one-piece extruded aluminium board that delivers that depth without the weight, combustibility or maintenance of timber. Available in a 150mm board, it suits feature walls, entry statements and full elevations across our aluminium cladding range.
This profile is a strong fit for facades designed to be a genuine architectural feature or statement, projects pairing a bolder textured profile with a flatter cladding elsewhere on the same building, and commercial and residential builds wanting strong shadow definition across a large facade area.
Castellated Boards share the same aluminium construction, concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of Knotwood’s cladding range. The bold, textured look comes with the same non-combustible, corrosion-resistant, low-maintenance performance throughout.
Castellated Boards come in a single 150mm size. Boards install with a tab lock fixing system in 6500mm lengths, forming a one-piece dimensional profile with no visible fasteners.
Castellated board hooks onto a tab-lock starter at the base and swings flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed cladding clip. Installation works from the bottom up, one board locking into the next, finishing with a cover trim pressed over the base trim to close the perimeter.
Castellated Boards install vertically using the same tab-lock system as a horizontal run, each board hooking onto the starter and swinging flush against the substructure, secured with a concealed cladding clip. Installation follows a left-to-right sequence, using the same starter, trims and corners as a horizontal wall.
A tab-lock starter trim is fixed to the base trim around the perimeter of the cladding area, giving the first Castellated board a secure hook point to swing onto and setting up every board that follows in the same system.
Base and cover trims run the perimeter of a Castellated run, concealing fixings around wall edges, windows and doors, and pressing together for a clean finished line wherever the cladding starts or stops.
Reversible corner trims let a Castellated run continue cleanly around both internal and external corners. Boards install up to the corner, then a corner cover trim presses into the corner base trim to finish the join.
Inspiration
Maison in Sans Souci, Sydney, takes a sculptural approach to contemporary duplex living. Designed by Dezcon, the project pairs strong geometric forms with softer curves to create two distinct homes within a cohesive architectural statement.
Boards can be spaced apart to open up the gap between them for a deeper shadow line.
Pair Castellated Boards with a flatter Knotwood profile to craft a distinctive look.
Mix and match different timber colours to create realistic and dynamic timber looks.
Castellated cladding is an aluminium cladding profile shaped to create a repeating pattern of ridges and recesses across the facade surface, producing strong shadow lines and a bold textured look. Knotwood’s Castellated Boards give a building genuine architectural presence: the shaped profile catches light and casts changing shadows as the sun moves across the elevation, giving the facade visual movement and depth.
Yes. Castellated and fluted describe the same profile shape, a repeating pattern of ridges and recesses cut into the board face. The terms are used interchangeably across the industry, with architects and specifiers more often saying fluted and manufacturers more often saying castellated. Knotwood’s Castellated Tab-Lock Board is our version of that profile, in extruded aluminium with a concealed tab-lock fixing.
Castellated Boards are the most texturally bold of Knotwood’s close-fitted cladding profiles. Where Shadow Line adds a subtle reveal and V Line adds a single groove line, castellated boards create a full surface pattern of ridges that reads clearly at street level. The profile generates stronger shadow definition than any of the flatter Knotwood cladding options, making it the right choice when the brief explicitly calls for a facade that makes a statement.
The repeating ridges in a castellated board create a shifting pattern of light and shadow across the building face as the sun moves through the day. This gives the facade visual movement without changing its material, colour or finish. Architects use this effect deliberately: a castellated section breaks down a large wall plane and adds interest without introducing a new material or finish system, which keeps the design language of the building coherent.
Castellated cladding suits projects that want a facade to function as an architectural feature: commercial buildings where street presence matters, residential builds where the facade design is a deliberate statement, or any project that pairs a bold textured section against a flatter cladding profile to give a large wall plane definition. It also works well on feature facade panels where the textured section acts as a visual counterpoint to simpler adjacent surfaces.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium cladding profiles, including Castellated Boards, are non-combustible and tested to AS 1530.1 and AS/NZS 1530.3 for combustibility and early fire hazard properties. Group Numbers are what the National Construction Code uses to set where a lining material can be used. For projects with formal compliance requirements, send us your building class and we will confirm the documentation for your project.
Knotwood castellated cladding carries a powder coat warranty to AS 3715, and the term depends on the finish you specify. Woodgrain finishes use Interpon D STF and carry up to 15 years. Standard colours carry 10 years on Interpon D1000, or 25 years on Interpon D2525, the ultra-durable coating used on prestigious commercial and high-rise projects. All warranties must be registered to take effect. Full terms and the registration form are on our warranty page.
Knotwood does not publish fixed pricing, because cladding is quoted on specification. The main variables are the finish, the total area and the trims the detail requires. Castellated Boards use a tab-lock starter plus base, cover and corner trims, and those matter to the final figure as much as the boards do. Send us your elevations and we will quote it.
Castellated Boards come in a single 150mm board size, supplied in 6500mm lengths. Boards install with a tab lock fixing system, forming a one-piece dimensional profile with no visible fasteners on the finished face.
Castellated Boards are available in traditional solid powder coated colours and in a sublimated timber grain surface, the same architectural-grade finish range used across the Knotwood cladding system. That means a castellated feature section can be specified alongside Shadow Line or any other Knotwood profile on the same facade with a consistent finish. The full range is on our finishes page.
Yes. Castellated Boards are commonly used as a feature section alongside flatter Knotwood cladding profiles on the same building. Because all Knotwood cladding shares the same aluminium construction, concealed fixing system and finish range, profiles can be combined across a single facade without sourcing from different suppliers. A castellated feature panel alongside a Shadow Line or Fixed Gap Board run is a typical pairing on commercial and residential projects.
In many cases, yes. Because the system fixes to a substructure rather than directly to the wall, castellated aluminium cladding can often be installed over an existing facade without stripping it back, which suits recladding and commercial refurbishment. What matters is whether the existing structure is sound and able to carry the substructure and the cladding, and whether the wall is straight enough for the substructure to be packed true. That last point matters more with a castellated profile than a flat one, because the shadow lines make any deviation in the plane more visible. Have the existing wall assessed before you order.
Very little. There is no painting, sanding or resealing cycle at any point. Periodic washing with a soft broom, water and a pH neutral detergent is all that is required, and more often on coastal installations to clear salt deposits before they sit on the finish. The one thing worth noting with a castellated profile is that the recesses collect more dust and debris than a flat board, particularly on a sheltered elevation, so a soft brush through the ridges is worth including in the wash. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners, since those can permanently mark the powder coat finish.
