Flip battens are aluminium battens formed from a single self-mating profile rather than a batten plus separate fixing hardware. Two identical lengths are cut, one flipped to mirror the other, and pressed together until they click, forming a solid rectangular batten with all fixings concealed on the inside face. Knotwood Flip Battens come in nine sizes, from a slim 38 x 16mm to a bold 200 x 25mm.
This system is a strong fit for facades and feature walls wanting a clean, uniform batten profile, architectural screens where consistent spacing matters across the run, and projects wanting a genuinely simple two-piece install without extra bracket hardware.
Flip Battens share the same aluminium construction and architectural-grade finishes as the rest of Knotwood’s batten range. Fixings sit behind the first half before the second clicks into place, so the finished batten shows a clean profile on every face.
Flip Battens come in nine sizes, from 38 x 16mm up to 200 x 25mm, each cut to length on site and self-mated with an identical second length. Purpose-designed end caps finish any exposed top or bottom ends.
The first length fixes to the substructure, then an identical length flips to mirror it and presses into place until the flip profiles click together, concealing every fixing point between the two mated halves for a clean finish on every face.
Where batten ends are exposed, purpose-designed end caps tap into position to finish the run, and can be secured with a metal adhesive if required.
Inspiration
Set within a generous, sloping site in Arkley, North London, Holmside replaces an existing dwelling with a contemporary home designed to make the most of its natural setting and long views across the valley.
Personalise your design with varied batten spacing.
Combine different profile sizes to craft a distinctive look.
Mix and match different timber colours to create realistic and dynamic timber looks.
Battens can flex around curved surfaces, opening up creative possibilities for unique and organic design statements.
Install battens vertically, horizontally, or even diagonally to match your project’s flow and architectural intent.
Flip Battens are Knotwood’s self-mating aluminium batten system, sometimes referred to as “self-mating slat.” A single universal profile flips onto itself: one half fixes to the substructure, the second flips and clips over it to form a complete hollow rectangular batten with every fixing concealed. It’s a decorative system, well suited to feature walls, garage doors, screens, columns and curved wall applications.
Each batten uses two identical profile halves. The first half fixes to the substructure, then the second half flips and clicks onto it to form a complete hollow rectangular batten, fully concealing all fixings between the two mated halves.
All four share the same aluminium construction and architectural-grade finishes. The difference is the fixing method. Flip Battens are self-mating, forming a closed box section from one profile with no separate hardware. Clip Battens use a concealed bracket and clip, which allows spacing and angle to be set on site. Track Battens fix to a continuous track that sets the alignment, with clips along it setting the spacing, and are designed around ceiling and interior wall runs. Panel Battens are engineered for larger spans such as wide commercial facades and expansive ceiling runs. All four sit within the Knotwood aluminium battens range.
They are a strong fit for decorative feature walls, garage doors and architectural screens, projects wanting a genuinely simple two-piece install without extra bracket hardware, and applications like columns or curved walls that standard flat batten systems can’t follow.
Yes. The self-mating universal profile suits columns and curved wall applications where standard batten systems can’t follow the surface geometry.
No. They are designed as a decorative profile or assembly and are not engineered for structural purposes.
Knotwood aluminium battens are not deemed combustible when tested to AS 1530.1, and the aluminium achieves a Spread of Flame Index of 0 to AS/NZS 1530.3. The profiles also hold a Group Number 1 classification under AS 5637.1, the highest of the four classifications for wall and ceiling linings. Bushfire construction is assessed against AS 3959 using the Bushfire Attack Level for the site, and compliance is determined by the assembly rather than the material alone. Battens have not been assessed as a standalone bushfire element, so send us your BAL rating and the application and our technical team will confirm what we can supply.
Yes. The profiles are manufactured from 6060 T5 extruded aluminium, which won’t rust or corrode in coastal conditions. For marine zone installations, 304 or 316 grade stainless steel fasteners are required, with an insulating barrier or rubber washer to prevent galvanic contact. Always confirm fixing requirements with your installer for the specific corrosion zone.
Knotwood Flip Battens carry a powder coat warranty to AS 3715, and the term depends on the finish you specify. Woodgrain finishes use Interpon D STF and carry up to 15 years. Standard colours carry 10 years on Interpon D1000, or 25 years on Interpon D2525, the ultra-durable coating used on prestigious commercial and high-rise projects. All warranties must be registered to take effect. Full terms and the registration form are on our warranty page.
Knotwood does not publish fixed pricing, because batten systems are quoted on specification. The main variables are the finish, the profile size, the total run and the fixing detail. Flip Battens need no separate clip or bracket hardware, since the profile mates to itself, which can simplify the quote compared with bracket-fixed systems. Send us your drawings and we will quote it.
Nine sizes run from a slim 38 x 16mm through to a bold 200 x 25mm, and the choice comes down to how the run will be read. A slim profile at close spacing gives a fine, textured rhythm that suits an interior feature wall or a screen seen at close range. A deeper profile reads from further away, which is why wider sizes tend to be used on facades and garage doors where the elevation is viewed from the street. Spacing interacts with profile depth, since a deeper batten blocks more of the diagonal sightline at the same gap. Send us the elevation and the viewing distance and we will recommend a size and spacing to suit.
The range is finished in a sublimated wood grain surface over a powder coated base, alongside traditional solid powder coated colours. That is the same architectural-grade finish range used across Knotwood’s aluminium systems, so a batten run can be specified alongside cladding or screens on the same project without the colours drifting between products. Because the finish is applied to aluminium rather than stained onto timber, it needs no resealing or repainting to hold its appearance. View our finishes here.
Periodic washing with a soft broom and water, using a pH neutral detergent.
They do not rot, warp, crack or require sanding, oiling or recoating. Timber battens in equivalent exposures would typically need retreatment or replacement within that period. Backed by a standard 15 year warranty and up to 25 years on selected finishes. See our warranty page for the terms that apply to this profile.
Yes. The profiles are manufactured in Australia from recyclable aluminium using VOC-free powder coatings and non-chromate pre-treatments. They require no chemical treatments, staining or recoating over their lifetime.
