What is the difference between slats and battens?

The terms are used interchangeably across the industry and there is no formal standard separating them. In general use, a batten is a deeper profile fixed with its long face perpendicular to the surface, creating shadow lines and dimensional texture across a facade or ceiling. A slat usually describes a flatter, shallower profile used in fencing and privacy screening. Track Battens use a track-and-clip system designed for fast, precise installation across walls and ceilings.

Can Knotwood aluminium battens be used for interior feature walls and ceilings?

Yes. Knotwood aluminium battens are equally suited to interior and exterior applications. For interior feature walls and ceilings, the batten system delivers a layered, dimensional timber look with shadow lines and rhythm that flat cladding cannot replicate. Clip, Flip, Panel and Track fixing options allow the system to be adapted to residential feature walls through to large-scale commercial ceiling installations.

Are Knotwood battens designed for structural use?

Our Clip Batten and Stand-Up Batten systems are engineered for wind and dead loads, making them suitable for decorative screens. For applications like balustrades or edge protection, a site-specific engineer must sign off on the installation. Our Flip Battens and Panel Battens are designed for decorative applications and are not engineered for structural purposes.

Do Knotwood batten systems come with engineering documentation for commercial projects?

Yes. Knotwood provides BIM and CAD files, pre-engineered span tables and project costing support for commercial and residential specifications. Drawings cover product componentry through to general detailing across a wide range of applications, and basic 2D DWG files are also available. What are Knotwood battens made from?

Knotwood battens are made from 6063-T6 structural aluminium, engineered for specific span tables and fixing points to ensure durability and structural integrity.

Can I use Knotwood aluminium battens in coastal or industrial zones?

Yes. Knotwood aluminium battens are non-combustible and will not rust or corrode. For marine environments, 304 or 316 grade stainless steel fasteners are required. Always confirm with your installer that fixings meet local building code requirements for the specific corrosion zone.

Do Knotwood battens rust?

No. Unlike steel, aluminium does not rust. When aluminium is exposed to air, it forms a thin layer of oxide that protects the base material from corrosion, even in harsh environments.

How do Knotwood aluminium battens compare to real timber battens?

Any metal will get warm in direct sunlight. Aluminium conducts heat, so it also sheds it quickly once out of the sun, and the surface temperature depends on the colour and finish, since darker colours absorb more solar radiation. For an application where surface temperature matters, send us the location and orientation and we will recommend a finish.

Do aluminium battens make a building hot inside?

Aluminium itself does not store heat the way a dense material does, but the surface temperature depends on the colour and finish. What determines the internal temperature is the wall or ceiling build-up as a whole: the cavity, the insulation and the ventilation behind the battens.
