Aluminium soffits are the lining fixed to the underside of an eave, overhang or undercover structure. Knotwood supplies two soffit systems made in Australia: cladding for a continuous finished underside, and battens for a layered soffit with shadow lines.
Soffits are one of the more overlooked parts of a building’s exterior, right until they fail. Tucked under eaves and overhangs, they face moisture, heat and weather from below on a constant basis. Builders use them on new builds to detail eaves properly, architects specify them for commercial undercover linings, and homeowners use them to replace tired timber soffits during renovations.
Soffits sit in one of the tougher spots on a building: shaded, often damp, subject to the kind of moisture cycling that timber handles poorly. Timber soffits are prone to swelling, staining, rot and pest damage, problems that are awkward and expensive to fix once they’re underway. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles deliver the same timber-look soffit aesthetic without those vulnerabilities, non-combustible, corrosion resistant, non-warping and low maintenance.
These systems show up most on eaves and overhangs, on residential and commercial exteriors, and in undercover entries, verandas and alfresco areas. They’re just as suited to carports, awnings and other undercover structures exposed to weather.
Knotwood Cladding Systems deliver a continuous, finished soffit surface. They suit projects that need a clean, timber-look underside.
Knotwood Batten Systems create a layered, dimensional soffit with shadow lines and depth. They work well for entries, verandas and undercover areas where texture adds to the design.
Knotwood aluminium soffit systems are built for Australia’s full range of conditions, from coastal humidity and tropical rainfall to the extreme heat of inland climates. Unlike timber, aluminium will not warp, swell, rot or attract termites. The powder coat finish is stable over time, making it a reliable choice wherever a soffit is exposed to moisture cycling or temperature swings.
Soffit and eave detailing plays a part in how a roof cavity ventilates, and ventilation affects thermal comfort. Knotwood soffit systems can be installed to maintain airflow through the eave space, but the performance outcome depends on the roof design, insulation and the ventilation strategy for the building. Send us your detail and we will confirm what the system can accommodate.
Knotwood aluminium soffit systems allow airflow through the gap between the soffit and substrate. That ventilation helps regulate temperature in the roof cavity and reduces moisture build-up, which in turn reduces the risk of condensation, mould growth and the structural damage that builds up slowly in poorly ventilated eave spaces.
Aluminium is non-combustible, which is why it is often considered for eave and soffit linings. Bushfire construction is assessed against AS 3959 using the Bushfire Attack Level for your site, and eaves are addressed specifically because they are a common point of ember entry. If you are building on bushfire-prone land, send us your BAL rating and we will confirm what we can supply for that assessment.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium cladding and batten systems can often be retrofitted over existing soffits, making them a practical option for renovation projects where replacing the underlying structure is not necessary. A professional installer will assess the existing soffit condition and substrate before recommending the best approach for a clean, lasting result.
Knotwood soffit systems use extruded aluminium profiles finished with a durable powder coat. The profiles are manufactured in Australia and available in a range of colours and timber-look finishes. Aluminium is the core material because it combines lightweight handling with long-term resistance to the corrosion, pests and moisture that typically limit timber performance in soffit positions.
Knotwood offers two system types for soffit and eave lining. Cladding delivers a continuous, finished surface suited to a clean, monolithic underside. Aluminium battens create a layered look with shadow lines and depth, working well on entries, verandas and undercover areas where texture adds to the design. Both use concealed fixings and the same architectural-grade finishes.
Aluminium soffit and eave cladding is commonly specified for residential and commercial eaves and overhangs, undercover entries, verandas and alfresco areas, carports and awnings exposed to weather, and renovation projects where failing timber soffits need a durable, low-maintenance replacement. Both new builds and retrofits are well-suited to Knotwood’s modular aluminium systems.
Very little. Knotwood aluminium soffits don’t rust, rot, warp or peel, so there’s no need for periodic sanding, sealing or repainting. A wash with mild soap and water is typically sufficient to keep the finish looking clean. This low-maintenance requirement is one of the main reasons aluminium is chosen over timber for soffit and eave applications, particularly in locations that are difficult to access regularly.
Yes. Knotwood’s aluminium soffit profiles are manufactured in Australia. The systems use modular profiles with concealed fixings and are available in multiple installation methods to suit different project requirements, from new residential builds to commercial undercover linings and renovation retrofits.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium soffit systems are specified on both residential and commercial projects. Architects use them for commercial undercover linings and entrance canopies where a durable, considered finish is required. The modular profiles, range of finishes and concealed fixing options make them well-suited to the detailing and documentation requirements of commercial specifications.
Timber soffits are prone to swelling, staining, rot and pest damage, problems that are awkward and expensive to fix once underway. Knotwood aluminium profiles deliver the same timber-look soffit finish without those vulnerabilities. The material is non-combustible, corrosion resistant, non-warping and low maintenance, and the finish holds well after installation, which matters in a position that is difficult to access for upkeep.
A continuous soffit lining closes off the eave cavity, which is the main entry point birds, rodents and wasps use to get into a roof space. Knotwood cladding profiles deliver that continuous surface, and because aluminium does not rot or soften the way timber does, the lining does not degrade into a new gap over time. Termites have no interest in aluminium either. Where a batten profile is used instead of cladding, the gaps between battens are open by design, so a separate mesh or infill is needed behind them if pest exclusion matters. Tell us which system you are considering and what the eave detail looks like, and we will confirm the right approach.
Yes. Eave downlights, exterior lighting, security cameras and sensors are all commonly fitted into soffit linings. Because Knotwood profiles are aluminium rather than timber, they can be cut and fitted with standard hardware without the edges swelling or fraying. Two things are worth planning at setout rather than after installation: where the fitting lands relative to the profile joins, so the cut sits cleanly, and access to the cavity behind for the wiring. Coordinate the fitting positions with your electrician before the soffit goes up, and the finished underside stays clean.
Inspiration
The Finn is anchored in its coastal setting. Venetian render recalls the softness of sand beneath bare feet, while enduring travertine reflects the strength of the headland. Curved Hinoki aluminium screens flow into matching soffits, creating sculptural harmony, tactile rhythm and a timeless coastal presence.
Inspiration
Subtle Mediterranean references define this residence, with a white render look facade, raw iron accents and a central olive tree grounding its earthy palette. Iroko toned cladding boards line the soffits, introducing natural warmth and texture that enrich the home’s relaxed and enduring presence.
Inspiration
Embracing curves and organic finishes, this residence presents a calm, grounded architectural language. Natural hues, rustic stone and lush greenery soften the structure, while Sycamore screens and garage doors provide key visual elements. Consistent material use inside and out blurs boundaries to achieve continuity and flow.
