Aluminium privacy screens and louvre systems control sightlines, filter light and shape airflow without closing a space down. Knotwood’s screening systems deliver all of that with the timber-look finish people specify, in a profile that holds its look with minimal upkeep.
Architects, builders and homeowners use them across balconies, boundaries, entryways and outdoor living areas, for both residential and commercial projects. The brief is usually the same: privacy and airflow without sacrificing design.
Timber screening looks good when it’s new, but it warps, swells, splits and weathers unevenly in the Australian climate. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles carry the same natural, wood grain look without any of those failure points, corrosion resistant, non-warping and low maintenance. Termites have no interest in aluminium.
These systems show up most on balconies, as boundary screening that replaces high-maintenance timber fencing, and on feature facades where shadow lines add depth. They are just as effective in outdoor living areas, and on plant and services screening where function still needs to look considered.
Knotwood Screen Systems create a fixed decorative or privacy element. They suit boundaries, balconies and feature walls, adding rhythm and texture while controlling the view in and out of a space.
Knotwood Louvre Systems add adjustability. Fixed louvres manage light and airflow by design, while operable louvres let you dial in more privacy, airflow or light as the moment calls for it.
Privacy screens are architectural products installed to control sightlines between spaces, providing visual separation without fully enclosing an area. They are used for boundary fencing, balcony surrounds, entryways and feature facades across residential and commercial projects. Aluminium privacy screens use extruded profiles that filter light and manage airflow while holding a consistent finish over time.
An aluminium privacy screen is an architectural screening product made from extruded aluminium profiles, designed to control sightlines, manage airflow and add a design layer to a facade or outdoor space. Unlike timber screening, aluminium does not warp, swell, split or require periodic sanding and resealing. The finish holds its profile with minimal upkeep, and does not need the sanding and resealing timber screening demands.
Timber screening looks good when it is new, but it warps, swells, splits and weathers unevenly under the combination of sun, rain and humidity that most Australian sites deliver. Knotwood aluminium profiles carry the same natural, wood grain look without any of those failure points. The systems are corrosion resistant, non-warping and low maintenance, and termites have no interest in aluminium.
Screens create a fixed decorative or privacy element, suited to boundaries, balcony surrounds, entryways and feature walls. Louvres add adjustability: fixed louvre systems manage light and airflow by design, while operable louvre systems let the user dial in more privacy, more airflow or more light as needed. Both use modular aluminium profiles with concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes.
Two things set the limit. Planning rules for boundary screens and fences vary by council, so check locally before settling on a height. The other is structural: a taller screen carries more wind load, and where the screen forms part of a barrier rather than sitting in front of one, it has to meet the structural requirements of the National Construction Code, published by the Australian Building Codes Board. Send us your height and location and we will confirm what the system can do.
Yes. Aluminium privacy screens are commonly specified for balcony surrounds on multi-residential and commercial buildings. They control sightlines between balconies and from the street without blocking light or airflow. One thing to settle early is whether the screen sits in front of an existing balustrade or forms part of the barrier itself, because that changes both the structural requirements and the fixing detail. Send us the balcony framing and we will work through the fixing with you.
Yes. Boundary screening using aluminium slat profiles is a common alternative to high-maintenance timber fencing. Aluminium does not rot, warp or require periodic repainting or resealing, so replacement cycles are significantly longer. Knotwood aluminium slat screening is available in timber-look finishes, making the transition from a traditional timber fence appearance straightforward.
Aluminium privacy screens turn up most often on balconies, where they control sightlines between neighbouring units and from the street, and as boundary screening in place of a timber fence. Beyond that, they are used on feature facades where the shadow line is part of the design, around outdoor living areas to give a courtyard or deck some separation, and as plant and services screening, where the job is to hide a pool pump or an air conditioning unit and still look considered. The same profile works across all of them, which is what lets a project carry one screen aesthetic from the boundary to the balcony.
Yes. Aluminium slat and louvre screens manage airflow by design rather than eliminating it. Fixed slat screens allow air to pass between profiles while controlling sightlines. Fixed louvre systems direct airflow more precisely. Operable louvre systems give the occupant direct control over how much airflow, privacy or light the screen provides at any given time. This makes them well suited to Australian climates where natural ventilation matters.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium privacy screens and louvres are available in timber-look wood grain finishes. Unlike genuine timber screening, the finish does not need sanding, oiling or resealing to keep its appearance. The full current range is on our finishes page.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium privacy screens and louvre systems use modular profiles manufactured in Australia for Australian conditions, including high UV and humidity. If your site is coastal, tell us how close to the water it sits, because proximity to surf affects the finish we recommend and the maintenance schedule.
Spacing between profiles is what determines how much a screen blocks and how much it lets through. A tighter spacing gives more privacy and less airflow, a wider spacing does the opposite, and the viewing angle matters as much as the gap itself, since a screen reads as more solid when you look at it obliquely than head on. The profile depth also plays a part, because a deeper profile blocks more of the diagonal sightline at the same spacing. Tell us the sightline you are trying to control and the distance between the two spaces, and we will recommend a profile and spacing to suit.
Knotwood screens use concealed fixings, so there are no exposed fasteners on the finished face. The screen frame fixes to posts, to an existing structure or to a substructure depending on the application, and the right method depends on the height of the screen, what it is fixing into and the wind exposure of the site. Boundary screens, balcony screens and feature facades each call for a different detail. Installation guides for the current screen systems are in our resources section, and our technical team can work through the fixing detail with your installer.
Inspiration
A coastal take on Palm Springs style, Albatross House brings mid-century modern design to the coast. Clean lines and sweeping stone curves meet neutral concrete textures and horizontal Nordic Oak shutters and timber look aluminium soffits, crafting a balanced aesthetic that connects effortlessly with the natural surroundings.
Inspiration
Caba Hill Beach House captures its oceanfront setting with angular concrete planes and Silver Wattle battens. Sandstone walls and polished concrete ground the design, while mid-century lines heighten its sculptural form. The result is a coastal sanctuary where raw strength meets refined minimalism.
Inspiration
Introducing The Powerhouse, Burleigh’s latest coastal statement near the point and James Street. A façade of stone and white render is animated by Knotwood’s horizontal and vertical lines in Spruce conceal the garage, entry and screens while layering texture, warmth and contemporary coastal clarity.
Inspiration
Set just steps from the glistening coastline, these homes follow the rhythm of daily life. A bold modern composition of concrete and glass is offset by an undulating Grey Ash screen, forming an instantly recognisable façade that balances structural strength with layered depth and visual intrigue.
Inspiration
On one of Burleigh’s most coveted streets, this modern coastal home layers Knotwood aluminium battens and tumbled silver travertine to create refined depth. White Ash battens unify screens, garage doors, ceilings and awnings, adding texture, privacy and sun protection, while seamlessly connecting interior and exterior living spaces.
