Aluminium outdoor living systems are the deck surface and shade structures that make up an alfresco area. Knotwood supplies two, made in Australia: decking boards for the floor, and modular pergolas for shade and definition overhead.
Outdoor spaces work hardest when the weather is at its best, and that’s when timber decking and structures are under the most strain. Knotwood’s systems are built for outdoor living in Australian conditions: spaces that look considered, feel comfortable to use and don’t need a maintenance session before every gathering.
Timber decking and pergolas have real appeal, the warmth, the texture, but outdoors is exactly where timber struggles most: constant sun, rain, humidity and temperature swings cause warping, splitting, splintering and colour loss. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles deliver that outdoor aesthetic without the ongoing demands, corrosion resistant, non-warping and low maintenance.
These systems show up most in alfresco and entertaining areas designed for year-round use, and around pool surrounds and decks that need to handle moisture and sun exposure. They’re just as suited to pergola structures that define and shade an outdoor living zone, and renovation projects replacing ageing or high-maintenance timber decks.
Knotwood Decking Systems create the foundation of an outdoor space, a durable, timber-look surface that handles weather, foot traffic and furniture without the upkeep timber demands.
Knotwood Pergola Systems add shade, definition and architectural presence. They give a space its own sense of place, whether that's a quiet corner or the centrepiece of an entertaining area.
An aluminium pergola is a structure made from aluminium profiles that provides shade, definition and architectural presence to an outdoor space. Aluminium pergolas do not warp, rot or require the repainting and re-oiling that timber pergolas demand. Knotwood aluminium pergola systems are available in timber-look finishes and use modular profiles with concealed fixings, for a clean finish suited to both residential and new-build projects.
Aluminium decking uses extruded aluminium profiles rather than timber boards, giving it resistance to warping, splitting, splintering and moisture absorption. The surface does not require sanding, staining or resealing. Knotwood aluminium decking is available in a timber-look, wood grain finish, so it carries the warmth of a traditional deck with minimal upkeep in Australian outdoor conditions.
Aluminium decking is commonly used around pools because it handles moisture and UV exposure without the warping, splintering or discolouration that timber decking is prone to in wet, sunny environments. Two things to confirm for a pool surround: the slip rating you need for the wet area, which is set by AS 4586, and the surface temperature in full sun, since any decking material heats up underfoot. Send us your project details and we will confirm the right profile and finish.
Yes. Replacing a worn timber deck with aluminium decking is a common renovation application. Aluminium profiles can often be installed over existing framing (subject to structural assessment) and the timber-look finish means the visual character of the space is maintained without the ongoing maintenance demands.
Both work, and the choice affects the engineering more than the appearance. An attached pergola transfers load into the house, so the wall or roof structure it fixes to has to be able to carry it and the flashing at the junction has to be detailed properly to keep water out. A freestanding pergola carries its own load through its posts and footings, which makes it independent of the house but usually means larger footings. Wind uplift matters in both cases, and more so on an exposed site. Send us the location and how you want it positioned, and we will confirm what the system can accommodate.
It depends on the roof. An operable louvre system closes to shed water, and the amount of shelter depends on the blade design and the pitch it is set to. A solid roof gives full cover but changes the light and the airflow underneath. Where a pergola sheds water, that water has to go somewhere, so guttering and fall need designing in rather than added later. Tell us how you want to use the space and we will point you to the right system.
Yes, and it is worth planning at design stage rather than after the structure is up. Aluminium profiles can be drilled and fitted with standard hardware, and the modular sections allow cabling to be run within the structure so it stays out of sight. Ceiling fans and outdoor heaters carry weight and, in the case of a fan, dynamic load, so the fixing point needs to be confirmed against the beam it is mounting to. Heaters also have clearance requirements set by the manufacturer. Send us what you want to fit and where, and we will confirm the detail with your installer.
Decking and pergola structures in Australia are subject to relevant structural requirements under the National Construction Code (NCC) and applicable Australian Standards. Council approval may also be required depending on structure size and site location.
Very little. There is no sanding, staining, oiling or resealing cycle at any point, which is the main practical difference from a timber deck or pergola. Washing down with water and a pH neutral detergent handles dirt, pollen and general grime, and a soft broom is enough for the deck surface. In coastal locations, wash more often to clear salt deposits before they sit on the finish. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners, since those can mark the powder coat. Beyond that, the annual job is clearing leaves and debris from between boards and around fixings so water keeps draining the way it is meant to.
Constant sun, rain, humidity and temperature swings cause timber decking and pergola structures to warp, split, splinter and lose colour. That creates a recurring cycle of sanding, staining and resealing to maintain the appearance and structural integrity. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles deliver the outdoor aesthetic of timber without those ongoing demands, staying structurally sound without periodic refinishing.
Knotwood aluminium decking and pergola systems are available in architectural-grade, timber-look finishes, including wood grain options. The powder coat finish is designed for direct sun and outdoor exposure without periodic repainting or resealing.
Yes. All Knotwood aluminium decking and pergola systems use modular profiles manufactured in Australia by a family-owned business. The systems are designed for Australian conditions, including UV intensity, temperature swings and coastal exposure.
Start with the structure: a deck creates the floor surface and a pergola adds shade and definition overhead. Choose materials suited to your climate and the level of maintenance you want to commit to. Aluminium decking and pergola systems deliver a timber-look finish with lower upkeep than real timber, which makes them a practical choice for Australian conditions including direct sun, rain and temperature variation.
Outdoor living refers to designing and using outdoor spaces, such as decks, pergolas, alfresco areas and pool surrounds, as functional extensions of a home or building. In Australia, outdoor living is a significant part of residential design given the climate. Aluminium decking and pergola systems are commonly used to create outdoor living spaces that are durable, low maintenance and suited to year-round use.
Inspiration
Centred on courtyards and atriums that embrace existing trees, the design invites natural light and space to flow freely, blurring boundaries between inside and out. Silver Wattle Knotwood timber look aluminium battens extend across gates, screens, cladding, decking and fencing, cultivating a tranquil, cohesive connection with nature.
Inspiration
Elevated above the city, the building’s bold black and white façade evokes cascading ribbons, while the rooftop retreat offers sculptural calm. Curved Spotted Gum battens form pergolas and awnings, dappling shade across alfresco spaces, their warm timber tones balancing the urban intensity with softness and refinement.
