Aluminium interior cladding and battens are extruded aluminium profiles fixed to internal walls to create a timber-look feature surface. Knotwood supplies two systems made in Australia: batten systems for a layered wall with shadow lines, and cladding systems for a continuous finish.
A feature wall changes the feel of a room, and the material has to deliver on day one and hold up for years after. Knotwood’s aluminium interior cladding and batten systems give interiors the warmth and texture of timber, without the maintenance that comes with the real thing.
Timber is still a common default for warm, textured interiors, but indoors it carries the same risks it does outside: swelling, marking and colour change, particularly in high-traffic or high-moisture areas. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles bring the timber-look aesthetic without those drawbacks, non-warping and low maintenance.
These systems show up most in reception areas and lobbies, feature walls in living rooms, hallways and bedrooms, and commercial fit-outs where durability and presentation both matter. They also hold up well in bathrooms, laundries and other moisture-prone spaces where timber would not.
Knotwood Batten Systems create a layered, dimensional wall with shadow lines and rhythm. They suit feature walls, reception areas and hallways where texture is part of the design intent.
Knotwood Cladding Systems deliver a continuous, finished wall surface. They suit interiors that call for a clean, timber-look interior cladding from wall to wall.
Yes. All four Knotwood interior wall batten systems (Panel Battens, Clip Battens, Flip Battens and Track Battens) can be installed over existing walls using a substructure of top hat sections, metal hollow sections or timber sections. This makes them well suited to renovations and commercial retrofits where removing the original wall structure is not practical.
Yes, with the right system. Knotwood’s Track Batten system is engineered to hold acoustic backing behind the battens, which is what does the acoustic work. The rating you achieve depends on the backing or insulation used with it, so tell us your target and we will confirm the build-up. Track Battens are the only system in the range designed for this.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium battens are non-combustible and tested to AS 1530.1 and AS/NZS 1530.3. They are suitable for internal wall linings in Type A and Type B construction under the National Construction Code, where non-combustible materials are required. This makes them a compliant choice for commercial buildings, multi-residential developments and any project where fire safety is a specification requirement.
Panel Battens combine the cladding board and batten into one pre-assembled system, reducing installation parts. Clip Battens use a separate bracket and clip-on batten, suit curved walls, and allow the widest profile variety. Flip Battens are the slimmest option, ideal for narrow spaces and cable concealment. Track Battens use a hidden track system designed specifically to support acoustic backing and achieve high NRC ratings.
Yes. Because Knotwood interior wall batten systems are installed over a substructure fixed to the existing wall, they cover uneven plasterboard and patchy surfaces without the wall needing to be made good first. Structural damage should still be repaired before the substructure goes on.
Yes. All Knotwood interior wall batten systems use a VOC-free powder coat finish, making them safe for enclosed indoor environments including bedrooms, living areas, offices and commercial spaces with limited ventilation. This is a meaningful advantage over some timber, MDF and PVC-based wall lining products that can off-gas in enclosed spaces over time.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium profiles are corrosion resistant and moisture resistant, making them a practical choice for bathrooms, laundries and other high-moisture interior spaces. Unlike timber, they will not swell, warp or discolour when exposed to humidity.
Knotwood interior wall batten systems use concealed fixings throughout, which means no exposed fasteners on the finished surface. Each system (Panel, Clip, Flip and Track Battens) installs over a substructure attached to the existing wall. The concealed fixing method delivers a clean architectural finish and accommodates multiple installation methods to suit different wall types and project requirements.
Yes. Knotwood’s aluminium interior cladding and batten profiles are made in Australia. This supports local supply chains, reduces lead times for Australian projects and means the product is manufactured to Australian building standards.
Knotwood interior wall systems are specified across a wide range of spaces. Common applications include reception areas and lobbies where a strong first impression is important, feature walls in living areas, hallways and bedrooms, commercial fit-outs where durability and presentation both matter, and moisture-prone spaces like bathrooms and laundries where timber would be unsuitable.
Battens create a layered, dimensional wall surface with shadow lines and visual rhythm, so they suit feature walls, reception areas and hallways where texture is part of the design intent. Interior cladding delivers a continuous, finished wall surface suited to interiors that call for a clean, monolithic look with the warmth of a timber-look finish. Both systems use modular aluminium profiles with concealed fixings and architectural-grade finishes, and both install over the same substructure.
Knotwood interior cladding and batten profiles are available in architectural-grade finishes, including timber-look wood grain options alongside solid powder coat colours. The same finish range runs across the whole Knotwood product line, so an interior feature wall can be matched to ceilings, soffits or exterior cladding on the same project without the colours drifting between systems. Because the finish is a powder coat on aluminium rather than a stain on timber, it needs no resealing or repainting to keep its appearance indoors. The full current range is on our finishes page.
Very little is needed. Knotwood interior cladding does not absorb moisture, so it will not swell, stain or need resealing the way timber lining does. Routine dusting keeps a feature wall looking sharp, and wiping down with a soft cloth and a pH neutral detergent handles anything more, which matters in kitchens, bathrooms and commercial spaces that get cleaned regularly. There is no sanding, oiling or repainting cycle at any point. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners, since those can mark the powder coat finish.
Yes, within limits that depend on the system. Clip Battens use a separate bracket and clip-on batten, which is what allows them to follow a curved wall, and they offer the widest profile choice of the four batten systems. Angled and raked walls are handled through the substructure, which is set out to the geometry before the profiles go on. How tight a radius is achievable depends on the profile width, so send us the setout and we will confirm what the system can do before you commit to a detail.
Inspiration
The Ridge rises 120 metres above sea level in Port Stephens, a three-level escape of grandeur and tranquillity. Curved forms soften its rectilinear concrete and stone structure, while Queensland Walnut aluminium battens flow seamlessly inside and out, uniting architecture and landscape with sculptural precision
Inspiration
Knotwood’s Studio K in Southport, Gold Coast, is the design and technical space where ideas, materials and finishes come together. The office has recently had a refresh, with Knotwood cladding used throughout the space in Kuro.
Inspiration
In a coveted dress circle position, Toop frames sweeping ocean and mountain views with sculptural presence. The residence reimagines Palm Springs modernism with bold, textural forms. Linear White Ash battens veil the façade, forming a composition of shadow, texture and sleek, seamless lines.
