Aluminium fencing and gates are boundary panels built from extruded aluminium profiles, fixed between posts to enclose a property while controlling sightlines and airflow. Knotwood builds both from the same screen range, made in Australia, so a gate shares the profiles and finish of the fence line around it.
Boundary fencing and gates need to work hard and look good doing it. Homeowners use aluminium fencing to replace tired timber boundaries, builders specify it for new estates where consistency matters, and landscapers use it for garden and courtyard screening that controls sightlines without closing an area in. The same system adapts to all of it.
Timber fencing is one of the more maintenance-heavy choices a homeowner can make. Exposed to sun, rain, soil moisture and termites along its full length, it warps, splits, greys and rots, often well before the rest of the property needs attention. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles deliver a decorative, timber-look fence in a system built to outlast the conditions that wear timber down, corrosion resistant, non-warping, insect proof and low maintenance.
Knotwood Screen Systems form the core fencing and gate panels. They provide a dimensional, considered look that controls sightlines while still allowing airflow.
Aluminium is corrosion resistant, which is why it is commonly specified near the coast where salt air accelerates the deterioration of steel and untreated timber. How a finish performs depends on how close the site is to breaking surf and the cleaning regime. Wind loading on a fence depends on its height, the screen’s open area and the exposure of the site, so it is set by the design rather than the material. Send us your site location and fence height and we will confirm the right finish and the fixing detail.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium fencing is highly customisable. It is available in a wide range of colours, timber-look finishes and screen styles, with durable powder-coated options to suit any design brief from contemporary to classic. The modular system also allows for different heights and layouts, so the fencing can be configured to suit the specific proportions and design intent of each project.
Aluminium is lighter than steel, corrosion resistant and easier to handle on site, which affects install time and long-term maintenance. Steel is denser and heavier. Knotwood’s screen-based fencing uses modular aluminium profiles designed for boundary and screening applications. If a boundary has a specific security requirement, discuss it with your fencing contractor, since that is determined by the height, the fixing and the hardware rather than by the panel material.
Aluminium is recyclable at the end of its service life and can be reprocessed without loss of material quality. Knotwood’s approach to material use and manufacturing is set out on our sustainability page.
No. Knotwood aluminium fencing will not rust, warp or need regular painting. There is no periodic sanding, sealing or repainting of the kind timber boundary fencing demands. A simple wash with soap and water is usually enough to keep it looking fresh.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium fencing can accommodate lighting and accessories. Many systems include integrated channels or mounting options, making it straightforward to add decorative features, garden lighting or security components. Because the profiles are made from aluminium, they can also be drilled and fitted with standard hardware without compromising the structural integrity or visual finish of the panel.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium fencing suits sloped and uneven landscapes. The modular design allows for stepped or raked installation, so the fencing follows the contour of the ground rather than requiring a level substrate. This makes it a practical choice for typical Australian residential blocks where the terrain changes across the length of a boundary.
Aluminium does not warp, crack or become brittle across the temperature range Australian conditions produce, from high summer heat to cold overnight lows. Thermal movement is accounted for in the way the modular profiles are fixed, which your installer will set out.
Yes. Knotwood’s aluminium fencing and gate systems are built on the same architectural screen range, so gate panels share the same profiles, finishes and modular construction as the fencing. This means the gate reads consistently with the surrounding fence panels rather than standing out as a separate element, which is important for feature entry statements and boundary designs where continuity matters.
Aluminium resists corrosion and warping, so the gate leaf stays true and continues to close properly. Beyond the panel, performance comes down to the hinges, the latch, the post fixing and, on wider gates, whether the frame is reinforced. Specify those with your gate installer alongside the Knotwood profiles.
Yes. The lightweight nature of aluminium makes the profiles well-suited to automation. A lighter gate places less strain on the motor, which supports smoother operation and can extend the working life of automatic gate systems. Knotwood aluminium gates can be integrated with standard automation equipment by a qualified installer.
Properly installed aluminium gates are typically quiet even in windy conditions. Their lightweight design, combined with quality hinges, latches and seals, minimises rattling and movement. Correct installation and the use of appropriate gate hardware are the main factors in ensuring quiet, stable operation over the life of the gate.
Yes. Intercoms, keypads, video units, locks and lighting are all commonly fitted to aluminium gates. The difference on a gate rather than a fence panel is cabling: anything powered on a moving leaf needs the cable run planned through the post and across the hinge side, so it is not stressed every time the gate swings. Position the intercom and keypad at the height your access system requires, and coordinate the cable route with your gate installer before the posts are set.
Knotwood’s aluminium fencing and gate systems are built on the architectural screen range and manufactured in Australia. The modular profiles are available in multiple finishes, including timber-look and contemporary options, with concealed fixings and installation methods suited to residential boundaries, commercial perimeters and feature entry gates.
Knotwood fencing is a modular system, so panels install between posts that are set into the ground or fixed to an existing structure. Post spacing is determined by the panel width, and the footing depth by the fence height, the soil and the wind exposure of the site, which is why a taller fence needs a deeper footing rather than just a longer post. Fixings are concealed, so there are no exposed fasteners on the finished face. Most boundary fencing is installed by a fencing contractor rather than as a DIY job, and installation guides for the current systems are in our resources section.
It depends on where you are and how high the fence is. Every state and territory has its own dividing fences legislation, and councils set their own rules on height, setback and what is allowed on a street frontage, so the answer changes from one address to the next. As a general guide, a standard height boundary fence between two properties usually does not need approval, while a taller fence, a front boundary fence or anything on a corner block often does. Where a fence sits on a shared boundary, most states also have a process for agreeing the work and the cost with your neighbour before it starts. Check with your local council and, for a shared boundary, your neighbour, before ordering. Once you know the height you are allowed, send it to us and we will confirm the right system.
