Aluminium ceiling battens are linear extruded profiles fixed overhead to create a layered, timber-look ceiling. Knotwood supplies two systems made in Australia: batten systems for a dimensional ceiling with shadow lines, and cladding systems for a continuous surface.
Ceilings take more of a beating than they look like they do. Heat, moisture, movement, and in covered outdoor areas, actual weather. Knotwood’s ceiling batten and cladding systems are built to hold a clean, contemporary finish in all of those conditions, indoors and out.
Timber-look ceilings bring real warmth to a space, but timber itself is a high-maintenance material overhead, where moisture, heat and movement take their toll. It warps, discolours and needs attention that’s awkward to manage at height. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles deliver the same timber-look ceiling finish without the upkeep, lightweight, durable, non-warping and low maintenance.
These systems show up most in alfresco, patio and outdoor entertaining areas exposed to the elements, and as feature ceilings in entries, living spaces and commercial interiors. They also suit soffit-adjacent ceiling runs that need a consistent finish front to back, and wet or high-moisture spaces where timber struggles to perform.
Knotwood aluminium ceiling battens create a layered, dimensional ceiling with shadow lines and rhythm. They suit feature ceilings, entries and alfresco areas where texture overhead adds to the design.
Knotwood Cladding Systems deliver a continuous, finished ceiling surface. They suit interiors and covered outdoor spaces that call for a clean, timber-look finish.
Yes. When paired with sound-absorbing materials behind or between the battens, aluminium ceiling battens reduce echo and improve sound quality within a space. The gap between battens allows acoustic insulation to be placed in the ceiling cavity, making aluminium ceiling battens a practical choice for commercial interiors, home theatres and open-plan spaces where managing sound reflection is part of the design brief.
Yes. Aluminium ceiling battens can incorporate LED strip lighting, recessed downlights or other fixtures between or within the battens. The modular profile spacing accommodates both surface-mounted and concealed lighting configurations, giving designers flexibility to achieve functional and decorative lighting outcomes without compromising the clean, layered ceiling aesthetic that batten systems are specified for.
Yes. The gaps between aluminium ceiling battens promote natural airflow through the ceiling plane, which improves ventilation in large or open spaces where air circulation is essential. This is particularly relevant for alfresco and covered outdoor areas where managing heat and airflow is as important as aesthetics, and where a fully enclosed ceiling surface would trap warm air.
Yes. Aluminium ceiling battens can be retrofitted into existing ceilings without major structural changes in most cases. A support framework is installed first, and the batten profiles are then attached to achieve the desired look and finish. This makes aluminium ceiling battens a practical option for commercial refurbishments and residential renovations where replacing the entire ceiling structure is not feasible or cost-effective.
Yes. Aluminium ceiling battens are designed to accommodate sprinklers, HVAC ducts and sound systems, with batten spacing configured around them. Sprinkler layout and clearances are set by the fire services engineer, since batten spacing affects spray distribution, so coordinate the ceiling setout early. That coordination is standard on commercial interiors and we can work to the spacing you are given.
Battens create a layered, dimensional ceiling with shadow lines and rhythm between each profile. They suit feature ceilings, entries, alfresco areas and spaces where texture overhead adds to the design. Cladding delivers a continuous, finished ceiling surface and suits interiors and covered outdoor spaces that call for a clean, monolithic look with a timber-look aluminium finish. Both systems use modular profiles with concealed fixings.
Yes. Knotwood ceiling systems are suitable for alfresco, patio and covered outdoor entertaining areas. The aluminium profiles are corrosion resistant and weather resistant, holding their finish in outdoor conditions where timber ceilings would be vulnerable to moisture, heat and UV exposure. Both batten and cladding options are available for covered outdoor ceilings, and both are made in Australia.
Aluminium ceiling battens deliver the same timber-look finish overhead without the upkeep that timber requires. Overhead surfaces are subject to heat, moisture and movement, conditions where timber warps, discolours and becomes difficult to maintain at height. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles are lightweight, durable and non-warping, and the finish holds well after installation, which matters as much to the building owner as to the installer.
Knotwood aluminium ceiling batten systems use concealed fixings and modular profiles that attach to a support framework overhead. Multiple installation methods are available to suit different ceiling types, spans and project requirements. The lightweight nature of aluminium profiles makes them easier to handle at height compared with heavier materials, and the modular system is designed to accommodate service integration such as lighting, HVAC and sprinklers.
Yes. Knotwood’s aluminium ceiling profiles are moisture resistant and corrosion resistant, making them suitable for bathrooms, laundries, commercial kitchens and other high-moisture interior spaces where timber ceilings would degrade over time. The powder coat finish does not absorb moisture and is easy to wipe clean.
Yes. Knotwood’s aluminium ceiling profiles (both batten and cladding systems) are made in Australia. Manufacturing locally supports shorter lead times for Australian projects and ensures the product is produced to Australian standards. The range is available across residential, commercial and alfresco ceiling applications throughout Australia.
Aluminium ceiling battens and panels are commonly specified for alfresco and covered outdoor entertaining areas, feature ceilings in residential entries and living spaces, commercial interiors including offices, hospitality venues and retail fit-outs, soffit-adjacent ceiling runs requiring a consistent finish, and wet areas where timber ceilings are not a practical option. The systems suit both new builds and retrofits across residential and commercial projects.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium profiles are non-combustible and tested to AS 1530.1 and AS/NZS 1530.3, the standards that govern internal linings including ceilings. They are suitable where the National Construction Code requires non-combustible materials. Send us your building class and we will confirm the documentation for your project.
Aluminium ceiling battens are available in architectural-grade finishes, including timber-look wood grain options alongside solid powder coat colours. The same finish range runs across the whole Knotwood product line, so a ceiling can be matched to wall battens, soffits or exterior cladding on the same project without the colours drifting between systems. The full current range is on our finishes page.
Very little is needed, which is the point of specifying aluminium overhead. Aluminium ceiling battens do not absorb moisture, so there is no sanding, oiling or repainting cycle at any stage. Dust settles on the top face of a batten over time, so an occasional wipe or a soft brush on an extension pole handles it. In commercial kitchens or wet areas, wiping down with a soft cloth and a pH neutral detergent is enough. Access at height is the main practical consideration, which is worth planning for at design stage rather than after handover.
Inspiration
Gregory Hills Town Centre brings a playful, contemporary approach to retail design, combining strong angular forms, colour and natural finishes. Designed by BN Group, the centre’s interiors continue this dynamic character with raked ceilings and generous clerestory windows that fill the space with natural light.
Inspiration
Overlooking the Canning River, this residence celebrates its setting with Sycamore ceiling battens that draw the eye to the water. Angled windows and Sycamore aluminium cladding define the southern façade, ensuring each of the five bedrooms captures uninterrupted views in a composition of crafted architectural clarity.
Inspiration
Mantra at Sharks spans four levels, its landmark form defined by a porte cochere where Driftwood battens articulate angular geometry with linear precision. Inside, angled battens extend across soffits, their interplay of timber, light and shadow echoing the exterior, creating cohesion and spatial rhythm.
