Aluminium balustrades are barrier panels fixed to a deck, balcony or staircase to stop people falling. Knotwood builds them from the same screen range used across its facades and fencing, made in Australia. Compliance is determined by the engineering of the installed assembly, not the panel alone, so the setout is confirmed project by project.
A balustrade has one job that cannot be compromised: keeping people safe. But it also sits in plain view on a deck, staircase or balcony, so it has to look like it belongs there too. Builders use them to meet code on multi-residential projects, architects specify them for feature staircases where the balustrade is part of the design, and homeowners install them on decks and balconies where the finish matters as much as the compliance.
Timber balustrades can look striking when they’re new, but they sit in some of the most exposed positions on a property, decks, balconies and stairs, all areas that see constant sun, rain and moisture. In those positions, timber splits, greys, swells and fatigues structurally over time, not what you want from a safety feature. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles deliver the timber-look balustrade finish people want, corrosion resistant, non-warping and low maintenance.
Knotwood Screen Systems form the core balustrade panels. They offer a dimensional, considered look that controls sightlines and adds texture, while meeting the practical demands of a balustrade: strength, consistency and a considered finish.
Balustrade compliance is determined by the engineering of the whole assembly, not by the product on its own. The National Construction Code sets the required height and gap limits, and AS 1170 sets the loads a barrier has to resist. Both change with the fall height, the building class and where the barrier sits. Send us the location, the fall height and what you are fixing into, and we will work through the requirements with you.
Balustrades are a safety-critical element, so the installed assembly generally needs to be shown to meet the structural and safety requirements that apply to the project. That covers load, material and geometry. This applies to new installations and to replacement projects where a non-compliant system is being upgraded. Confirm the certification requirements for your project with your installer, engineer and local council before proceeding.
Knotwood balustrade systems are built on the architectural screen range, using modular extruded aluminium profiles with a durable powder-coated finish. The panels use concealed fixings and are manufactured in Australia. Profiles are available in a range of colours and timber-look finishes. The modular construction means panels can be configured to different heights and layouts to suit the project.
Infill is the part of the balustrade between the posts and the handrail, and it is what determines how the barrier looks and how much it screens. Knotwood balustrades are built on the architectural screen range, so the infill is a screen panel: vertical or horizontal profiles, at a spacing set to suit the design and the gap limits that apply to the project. Spacing affects sightlines, airflow and the visual weight of the run, and the same profile can carry through from a deck balustrade to a stair. Tell us the look you are after and where the barrier sits, and we will confirm what spacings are available for it.
A handrail is a separate requirement from the barrier itself. Whether one is needed, and at what height, depends on the application and what the project has to comply with, so a stair generally has different requirements to a deck edge. Knotwood balustrade systems are built from modular profiles that can be configured with a top rail as part of the panel, and where a graspable handrail is required it is specified alongside the balustrade rather than as part of the screen panel. Send us the application and the drawings and we will work through what the assembly needs to include.
Knotwood balustrades are quoted per project rather than sold at a fixed rate. The main variables are total run length, height, the infill you choose, the finish and whether you are fixing to a new structure or retrofitting to something existing. Retrofits usually cost more because the fixing and set-out have to work around what is already there. Send us your drawings or rough dimensions and we will price it.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium balustrades can be installed on most existing balconies, decks or staircases, provided the underlying structure is sound. Custom fabrication of the screen panels means a precise fit is achievable for retrofit projects, with a finish that integrates cleanly with the existing structure rather than sitting over it awkwardly. Compliance still depends on the engineering of the whole assembly, including what the balustrade is fixed into, so have the existing structure assessed before you order.
Yes. Stair balustrades are one of the most common applications, and the panels are raked to follow the pitch of the flight rather than stepped. Because the panels are custom fabricated, the rake angle is set to the actual stair rather than to a standard, which is what keeps the line clean where the run meets a landing. Feature staircases are where this matters most visually, since any inconsistency in the rake is obvious. Send us the stair drawings, including the going and rise and the landing positions, and we will set the panels out to suit.
Knotwood aluminium balustrade panels and screens are used across residential deck and balcony balustrades, stair screens and feature staircases, and renovation projects replacing ageing or non-compliant balustrade systems. The same profile carries consistently across multiple elements on the same build, which supports a clean, coordinated result across decks and stairs.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium balustrade systems are specified on both residential and multi-residential or commercial projects. Builders use them to meet code on apartment balconies and multi-storey decks. Architects specify them for feature staircases where the balustrade is part of the design statement. The modular, consistently finished profiles suit the documentation and repeatability requirements of larger commercial specifications.
Yes. Knotwood aluminium balustrades are designed for both indoor and outdoor applications. The corrosion-resistant profiles and durable powder-coated finishes hold up in exposed outdoor positions including decks and balconies, as well as in interior applications like feature staircases where the finish and design of the balustrade is part of the overall design statement.
Timber balustrades sit in some of the most exposed positions on a property: decks, balconies and stairs. In those positions, timber splits, greys, swells and can fatigue structurally over time, which is a genuine concern for a safety-critical element. Knotwood’s aluminium profiles deliver the timber-look aesthetic in a system that is corrosion resistant, non-warping and low maintenance.
Aluminium is corrosion resistant, which is why it is commonly specified on coastal decks and balconies where salt air accelerates the deterioration of steel and untreated timber. How the finish performs depends on how close the site is to breaking surf, the exposure of the elevation and the cleaning regime, and marine-grade stainless fixings are required within 1km of the ocean. Because a balustrade is safety critical, the fixings matter as much as the panel. Send us your site location and we will confirm the right finish, the fixing specification and the maintenance schedule for that exposure.
Very little. Knotwood aluminium balustrades do not rot, split, warp or grey over time the way timber does in exposed positions. There is no periodic sanding, sealing or repainting of the kind timber balustrades typically require. A wash with mild soap and water is usually all that is needed to maintain the finish.
Yes. Knotwood balustrade profiles are manufactured in Australia. For a safety-critical element that also means the supporting documentation comes from the same place as the product, so test data, engineering detail and finish specifications can be confirmed against your project rather than sourced from an overseas supplier. Manufacturing locally also means shorter lead times, which matters on a balustrade because it is usually one of the last elements installed and often sits on the critical path to handover.
Inspiration
Clean lines and a warm material palette give this simple Portsea home a relaxed, welcoming character. The crisp white exterior is balanced by timber-look detailing, adding warmth and breaking up the strong geometric forms of the facade.
Inspiration
A 1970s three-unit complex gets a fresh coastal identity at Coral Surf in Peregian Beach, Queensland.
The renovation of Seascape by Covet Developments brings a more considered material palette to the existing building, with Knotwood aluminium used across the balustrades, gates and fencing. The timber-look finish adds warmth and texture while keeping the detailing clean and contemporary.
